I never thought there would be something that makes me laugh out loud as much as their back and forth between Anakin and Rude Obiwan Kenobi in the gameplay video of Revenge of the Sith, but they really outdid themselves with this Old Crone Rey bit, congrats gentlemen now my roommate thinks I'm deranged due to suddenly bursting out laughing while wearing my headphones
OMG, they did it! They finally did it! The Snake Eyes review in its entirety! You guys just keep on giving us fans exactly what we deserve. Bless you! Bless you both!
I appreciated the faithfulness to the material, but I personally thought the scene where Mario jumped off Yoshi and let him fall to his death made it difficult to identify with him as the hero after that point.
My brother and I had the same thought with just how fast everything moves. There’s no explanation someone shows up and says “ let’s do a thing” and everyone just does. Good for kids
1:44:38 That's actually in the movie as a post credit scene... only it isn't the Mario brothers that the Nintendo executives approach, it's the two henchmen Iggy and Spike.
Re Ike Perlmutter- he also tried to get a pal (Nelson Peltz) appointed to Disney's board so he could basically conduct a coup and get himself back in. It did not work and it only took forever but Perlmutter was fired for this (and the other stuff too!). Not sure if the boys discussed this last week.
I was a disappointed by it. Love Jack Black, and was expecting a musical number in this, but him repeating the word Peaches for 90% of it just didn't really do it for me. I do wonder whether they tied his hands a bit with it.
I was listening while walking my dogs and tuned out during the star wars segment. To my surprise/dismay, when I started paying attention again 20 minutes later, you were still talking about star wars
1:33:31 so at the expense of sounding really nerdy, I looked into this because I wanted to know who DK's dad was. Cranky Kong, which the more I looked into it the weirder it got lmao so apparently Cranky Kong's name is actually Donkey Kong Sr and is the version of Donkey Kong we see in his very first game where he throws barrels at Mario, which is probably why hes called Cranky, he was very Cranky in that game😂 but after Donkey Kong country was released, all appearances of Donkey Kong canonically are actually Donkey Kong Jr's son who would be Donkey Kong III 😂
1:27:40 Literally DYING of MID 😅I never use this, but I think this is what I was feeling when I was watching the Mario movie. Like. Is this it? This is all you're giving us as the Mario movie?
I love Mason explaining that people dont care about reviews as much and im here choosing which movie im go each month on what James and Maso have to say about it lmao
I was just kind of shocked how boring the Mario movie was. It needed at least one interesting plot point and a tiny bit of character development. And better jokes. I was getting bored around the time they went to the Kong world. The Kamen Rider reference during the final battle was pretty hype, at least.
28:54 Blue Beetle was originally a rip-off of the Green Hornet, hence the name. An unfortunate side effect of skipping straight to Jaime in my opinion is missing out on the fascinating legacy of Blue Beetle where each incarnation is a very different representation of the time period they were created in. Dan Garret was an attempt to cash in on the new superhero craze in the 1940s so he started out as a Green Hornet knockoff before eventually getting generic superpowers. Ted Kord was a 1960s gimmick character driving around in a mechanical beetle and using wacky gadgets. And then Jaime Reyes was essentially Peter Parker with a shapesgifting alien suit.
There is a spiderman game with a similar story of Miguel and Peter crossing hairs about preventing the death of Mary Jane after past peter gets sent to the future. And venom is there as well
Thing is though, kids adore Harry Potter. Their parents loved it growing up, so now they love it cause their parents read it to/with them. It's the same with things like Star Wars and Pokemon. They're all huge in the school I work at. The TV show will probably do better than fantastic beasts if it's good. I'd much prefer a Marauders series or animated version of HP.
Honestly I really liked the Super Mario Bros. movie. A lot of the criticisms that I've seen people have just seem like nitpicking. I was greatly entertained and I laughed frequently. It's not often that I disagree with you guys but I definitely think best movie ever.
The Mario movie played out scarily close to what I imagined it would be for the past 5 years or so since it was first announced in development. Right down to the tension between Mario and his dad. I DID totally believe they were gonna make Pratt-Mario a Junior, and his Dad would basically be Jump Man from DK and that Cranky would be canon arcade Donkey Kong, but they swerved on that, although a couple lines of dialogue seem to dance around the concept (particularly DK saying "I'd like to meet your dad" or somesuch), but I guess it got dropped for being too confusing or whatever. Anyway, you get a like, even though Maso clearly can feel no joy in life, as indicated by him having an opinion about a kids' movie that is different from mine.
i totally get a lot of the criticisms of the mario movie. shallow, forced exposition, hurried along at a pace that sort of suggests "fuck it, dont think about it lets keep it moving" and some half assed voice acting to go with it. those are the most valid criticisms and i completely agree. but i keep seeing a "zero plot" criticism that i dont understand, people claiming theres "hardly" a plot... to me the plot was outlined very clearly: mario takes a big gamble with his professional career out of an inner desire for greatness and his family criticizes him for dragging his brother down with him, a criticism that particularly stings because of how much he loves his brother. then, we see mario's desire for greatness LITERALLY drag his brother down with him to the point that his brothers life is now in mortal danger, forcing mario to rise to the occasion and actually achieve greatness on a larger scale than he ever before imagined in order to save Luigi and redeem his life choices. call it simple, but the plot is not as nonexistent as some people are saying. i think people are misdirecting their frustrations with the pacing/plot contrivances that simply function to get us to the action/set pieces as quickly as possible, but as a beat sheet (lol) i thought the movie does what a standard hero's journey/coming of age story ought to do 🤷 just my opinion obviously, maybe people are right and theres no plot, i thought it was a fun movie though
Born and raised as a francophone in Montreal and I NEVER expected you guys to say ''Saint-Hubert". PS : the half burger bun is a big thing and it's greeeeat.
Not trying to necessarily defend the movie in general. I don’t think it’s amazing but I think Donkey Kong and Peach relationship is a reference to the King Kong and Ann Farrow relationship but I might be looking too deep into it.
I would love a Harry Potter reboot, as long as they use the books as the script and follow it to a tee. Also, I think Adam Driver would make an awesome snape.
I can understand how you could give Super Mario Brothers a worst movie ever, you give clear arguments and I respect your opinion, but to this day, I'll not understand how you gave Wonder Woman 1984 a best movie ever.
We all have some things we regret lol. Since the review they've regarded it as a bad movie. I too was shocked that they gave it a best movie. WW84 was the first superhero movie after BVS that really had me going "what the fuck were they thinking?"
I don't like Wonder Woman 1984, but in the boy's defence, it was a different time - we were in a movie drought because of Covid, so I imagine that had an impact. I do think it had some good elements to it - Pine, Pascal and Wiig were very watchable, even if the story around them was a bit pants. OK, very pants.
Okay now that I know mason has a switch he needs to play neon white it’s very intimidating but hearing either of you talk about how much you’ve fallen in love with it would be a dream (came out summer of last year)
I never thought there would be something that makes me laugh out loud as much as their back and forth between Anakin and Rude Obiwan Kenobi in the gameplay video of Revenge of the Sith, but they really outdid themselves with this Old Crone Rey bit, congrats gentlemen now my roommate thinks I'm deranged due to suddenly bursting out laughing while wearing my headphones
The Mario movie was pretty good, nice fun movie with heaps of references and the rainbow road scene looked great, loved the BLUE SHELL bit that was fire 🔥
I had a couple of Scottish blokes sat behind me and my family and they were definitely in there 30's and constantly shouting wow! and look! everytime a member berry was dropped and it was a lot, not sure if that's why I didn't like Mario
It really is refreshing to see. I get that people are usually the most passionate about a movie directly after release, but my god. These two and AmandaTheJedi were the first level-headed reviews of the movie I've seen. It's not the peak masterpiece the internet would have you believe, it's just kind of okay.
I fell asleep during Mario. The Sonic films (and all of the other films mentioned) were much better family features. I want to hear Old Crone Rey's review.
Of course Mason crashed SUGGESTIBLES after James dissed him last week...😂 *Update: Old Crone Rey may be one of the funniest characters that Mason has ever done. I had to pull over while driving, because I was laughing so hard! 😂
When James is talking about the super mario bros (1993) at 1:44:39 that does happen in the movie. It is the postcredit sequence of the movie. Skip to 4:47 th-cam.com/video/yhKnjnkta_Q/w-d-xo.html
We've seen everything in the Mario movie in Mario Kart and Smash Bros for years. None of the references and gags really hit because there's nothing new about them. Nintendo incessantly references its own history in it's games, so doing it in a movie is just not exciting.
You guys are dead on about Mario. Disney is not perfect, but heck, they take time to develop story, character, and connection. You can easily make video game movies for kids that adults enjoy tremendously. Wreck it Ralph PS I saw it a second time with the kids, and knowing just HOW paper thin it all is, it was way more enjoyable and even funnier.
This is easily one of the most hillarious episodes. That old Rey bit was incredible. Hopefully it gets animated.
Ask and you shall receive. It's been animated
4:00 "These M&Ms cannot be fucked anymore" had me dying
Crone Rey is something I didn't know I needed. This is a certified Nick Mason classic. (1:17:45)
Mason aggressively saying “I already saw Yoshi. I saw YOSHI BEFORE YOU WERE BORN” 😂😂
James dying of laughter to Old Crone Rey was the best part of my day
My brother and I had the same thought with just how fast everything moves. There’s no explanation someone shows up and says “ let’s do a thing” and everyone just does. Good for kids
Vain Luke, Old Crone Rey and Pass-agg Obi-Wan are the best thing to come out of the Star Wars celebration.
You need to hear the Rude Obiwan Kenobi from Revenge of the Sith game video, if you haven't already
In words of James and Maso; ‘it’s bloody time to do a big weekly planet!‘
Mason is ridiculously spot on with every single secret invasion prediction while James is off with everything
I was brought to tears by Old Rey, bravo.
The Rey segment had me rolling😂😂😂
28:19 🤣 this episode is the first thing to make me genuinely smile in days
1:19:50 "I don't know if I'm a Palpatine. I'm Rey Skywalker... I think."
The Weekly Planet hype house is something I desperately need to be real lmao
Old Crone Rey is the best character you've ever done. This is amazing.
Best episode ever!! Please make an Old Rey section from now on or a movie at least
I think Maso's dog interactions are my favourite thing about the podcasts.
1:44:38 That's actually in the movie as a post credit scene... only it isn't the Mario brothers that the Nintendo executives approach, it's the two henchmen Iggy and Spike.
Really liked the Blue Beetle trailer, some heavy Tokusatsu vibes and I’m hyped to see it.
Wait, Rei was in The Beatles!?
Now THAT'S A TWIST!
Yep. They talked about it last week, but included the nefarious musical sting that accompanies the Perlmutter image.
Bowser needed a bigger musical number. Hopefully he gets one in the sequel. You can’t squander Jack Black like that!
I was a disappointed by it.
Love Jack Black, and was expecting a musical number in this, but him repeating the word Peaches for 90% of it just didn't really do it for me.
I do wonder whether they tied his hands a bit with it.
2ooth Fairy: Tooth Fast, Tooth Furious.
Crone Rey had me in stitches.
Old Rey was the best part I'M DYYIIIINGG. WE FOUND A BIG KNIFE
1:38:11 Mario eats a mushroom, Dark Star starts playing.
I was in the office at 1:17:42 and I had to cover up my laughs with coughs🤣
It's cool to learn that James listens to Some More News.
Has their even been a video recording of this podcast? Would love to see the banter.
I think most people forget Daisy was in Murder on the Orient Express
I was listening while walking my dogs and tuned out during the star wars segment. To my surprise/dismay, when I started paying attention again 20 minutes later, you were still talking about star wars
Just did it again, it's still happening
It's the Weekly Planet, baby!

My favorite podcast shouting out Shaun AND Some More News??? Let’s go.
Didn't realise you guys were from Melbourne til today! Me too. That's cool!

Old crow Rae Skywalker is the best bit going in 2023

There was a Kamen Rider reference?
39:10 Jarvis was a skrull in the comics 😂
the defenders of the earth segment is now a beloved tradition and if you change or remove it i will be personally crushed and devastated
Hearing the bois dunk on JK Rowling for six minutes straight made my day. Thanks mates

Somewhere around 1:34:26 Mason calls Chris Pratt "Chris Crapp" lmao
Crone Rey has officially dethroned Rude Obi-Wan Kenobi as my favorite Star Wars character.
That Indiana Jones impression is top-notch.
“I’m Rey Skywalker.. I think… I don’t know…”. Old Rey had me stuck in my car for 10 minutes!
The Mario movie felt like ADHD: the movie. Every plot point was moving a mile a minute

Your delirious deconstruction of movie names is delightful! - BIG EARS BATMAN!
"Your delirious deconstruction of movie names is delightful! I'm Big Ears Batman!" - Big Ears Batman
I need a 4h version of old ray telling stories 🤣🤣
Rule of thumb: whenever James and Mason disagree in a review, Mason is always right.
Not in this case
@@ExNihil0Nah, he definitely was. The movie was ass

I feel reassured by your Mario review - I was starting to think it was just me (and some critics) who thought it was a bit naff.
Best movie of the year
kingsley ben-adir. When Sir Ben Kingsley gets the digimon treatment 😂
