    This record shows sampling at it's highest level. This pretty much came out the same time as "3 ft high and rising" by De La Soul
    Incredible times. Hip Hop in "88 - '89 was incredible. Groundbreaking stuff right here

    • @frasefra5297
      @frasefra5297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Absolutely, De La Soul’s “3-feet High…” and “Paul’s Boutique” are master classes is sampling. Then the prices for sampling went 👆🏽.

      yea, it's sad you can only find 3 ft High and Rising on TH-cam. Not on any of the streaming audio services and the vinyl will cost you over $100.

    Most of the tracks on this album were already done by the Dust Brothers before they were hired to produce the Beasties. When the beasties were introduced to them they decided to use what was already done and they would Rhyme over it. This album is almost all sampled from other works so the instruments you hear are often sampled from other songs. The story of this album is really intereting.

  • @sallyh5413
    @sallyh5413 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    They sampled 14 different songs for this, you would never be able to do that today. I recommend "Professor Booty' or 'High Plains Drifter' or 'Get it Together' ✌️

    Paul's Boutique is a one-of-a-kind album because it absolutely pushed the boundaries of sampling in production. The entire album sampled about 125 songs which made a litigation magnet, which in turn established royalty requirements for sampling. To make the album today would cost millions in licensing/royalty fees before a single track was ever laid down.

    Great reaction to a fun track! After making a huge hit (Fight for your Right) with their first album, for the second album, they switched producers, and style. This album forced the sampling laws we have today since they assembled songs out of clips from other recordings, usually funky jams from the early and mid -70's.

  • @bschuler6216

    You mention the "Real Instruments", well, there was a _little_ of that on this album (Paul's Boutique), but that mostly occurred on the albums after this. _Paul's Boutique_ is mostly famous for being a huge sampling breakthrough. The incredible amount of layered samples done by the Dust Brothers here is really staggering if you look into it.

    One day when you get some free time you should really give the whole album "Paul's Boutique" a listen. It came out in '89 and did not connect to well at first but now is considered a master piece in sampling. So stuff that came out in '88, '89, '90 are Public Enemy "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back", Eric B. & Rakim "Follow the Leader", De La Soul "3 Feet High and Rising", Jungle Brothers "Done by the Forces of Nature", A Tribe Called Quest "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm". It fits in nice with Tribe and De La but they sounded nothing like Rakim. Give it a listen on headphones one day you wont regret it. Some say there are over 300 individual samples used. Peace
