Sailing.. Going Nowhere Slowly, Sometimes Backwards & Always Sideways! | A&J Sailing S1Ep

  • POV our home floats and we use the wind to move around. It's usually sideways and moving very slowly (rarely in the direction of our desired destination) but it's constantly.. MOVING.
    Life aboard a sailboat is tricky, and it can be hard to find balance, especially at first. Things break (a lot) and things usually don't go as planned! But we're getting the hang of this sailing thing, slowly. And we're realizing that slowing down, might be exactly what we need.
    Join us this week as we island hop our floating home from Texada to Cortes, in the slowest and most indirect way possible!

    I don't know if MV's laugh when they blow by... but I definitely laugh at them every time I sail by the fuel dock!

    Re: powerboat wake - as a stinkpot operator, I’m always cognizant of my wake and how it affects others. However my wake is small(ish) at 25 knots, huge at 15 knots, and small again at 5 knots due to hull efficiency. So when it seems like I ‘zoomed’ past you, I did that on purpose with your comfort in mind. Great channel and hello from Quarry Bay, Nelson Island.

      hahah! Thank you! And great insight, mate. We will lower our fists next time a stink potter zooms by!
      Also Quarry Bay! You wouldn't have felt our wake, but we would have sailed very slowly past you not too long ago, on our way back from Princess Louisa!

      Agreed! We keep coming back for them! Many sailboaters dream of crossing oceans and I know one day we will, but right now I just want to sail by mountains & gaze at glaciers, haha! - A

    You guys crack me up! James takes the helm and Allison winches! (on our boat we say the wench at the winch). And James is at the helm when Allison drops the hook! Way to go James! You have it real good!

      Hahaha you made us have a good laugh! Truth of the matter is Allison does all the hard work and all the filming and I could easily be replaced by an auto-pilot! I just pray she doesn't dream of solo-sailing.

    Salamanders are great little creatures to have on board too they eat all the bugs!beautiful anchorage.
    So you harvested the sea asparagus but you never showed what you did with it and how good it was. But your Mexican dinner looked delicious ♥️♥️♥️
    What a sailing team you guys make. As Denny would say there are no pink or blue jobs unless its a physical limitation that can’t be overcome.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were SO many salamanders in the quarry lake, it was strange. Maybe there's always that many in a lake you just can't see them as well. James wouldn't let me take any home with me, sadly haha

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha you're right, we didn't eat the sea asparagus that night so we didn't get to share. But we did cook it up the next night and ate it with friends (sauteed)! The unanimous review was that it was oddly, quite tasty! Soaking it in fresh water def helped reduce the saltiness. Would eat again

      Thanks momma! No gender specific roles here but we definitely both fall into roles that match our strengths. We know need to switch that up from time to time so that were both comfortable with all the tasks onboard!

    such an awesome video! I am in loooove with all the drone shots you got 😍also, sailing looks like such a workout (around 6:32) haha!

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Caroline! The quarry lake was a really fun place to fly it. The drone really gives you a whole different perspective of the place you've visited!

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha! Yes sailing is pretty physical when your adjusting your sails often (tacking, like we were at at 6:32)! Even just using your muscles to stay balanced and upright when the boat is heeled to one side for long periods of time. But the biggest workout for sure, for us, is hauling up our anchor by hand😅

  • @joemiller8029
    @joemiller8029 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Funny you stress about your boat being gone in what looks like zero wind. The island where I live blow 30kts most every night. 3-4 nights a week I swear that we won't make it till the morning without breaking free. I dream constantly about calm anchorages like the one you filmed! My dream!

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hahah! yeah, we laugh about that as well.
      We were just learning how to anchor and pretty nervous about leaving the boat at any time.
      We've become more comfortable after anchoring in different anchorages and conditions. I'd be worried about breaking free in 30kt winds as well! Wishing you calmer anchorages in future, friend!

    Nice job filming editing and sound, just gorgeous, Please let me know what type of cameras and microphone are you using here?

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for that compliment!
      We have pretty basic budget camera gear currently - we're filming on a Canon Rebel T7i, an entry level camera (Allison's first DSLR - i think it's since been discontinued) and have a variety of lenses for that and use a directional Rode video mic. I would say most of the video/sound magic happens in post in the editing program
