Time was a visionary album. I know no other. And i still wonder how Jeff knew back then. The 80ies were a time of gr8 hope. But there was already a seed of doubt. Still, magic how he managed to expand on that back then and be so right.
I was born in 2000 which makes me a real 21st-century man. The lyrics take on a whole different meaning for me, but it still works 100%. "you should be so happy, you should be so glad. so why are you so lonely, you 21st-century man" coming from a song written in 1981 literally makes my hair stand on end. This song is actually more aware of the state of modern society than modern society itself is.
There were times I never though I would see this time. 2021, at 79, I can truly appreciate how I got here. Music always was the magic on which I traveled. Lynn is a true genius.
I feel as though it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of existing in a time full of such possibilities and technological advances yet feeling so utterly disappointed, tired, rejected and alone.
I was 11 in 1981. My Cousin Introduced me to this album. Thank goodness for people who take the time to pass on great music to the next generation. My Cousin has been gone for a couple of years now. I'll always think of him when I listen to this album. I like to think that his spirit was downloaded into this masterpiece, years before his passing.
That's why I send my stepdaughter all this wonderful music, and I'm still finding more myself, check out all those old blues, jazz, folk, and alternative tunes like sea shanties, " like the hog eyed man"

I bought the album in 1981 as a teen. Listened over and over. Amazing how much has become true. I should be so happy. I should be so glad. So why am I so lonely? This 21st century girl.
I was 15 in 1981. This was the first album i ever bought, and it's still my favourite of all time. I've listened to it thousands of times, and never ever tired of it. It's masterpiece.
I listened to this whole album "TIME" on my way home from dropping off my son for his second semester at college. It made my 1.5 hour drive on the Pa. Turnpike go much faster....took me back to 1980's Awesome!
This is my favourite ELO album. I don't know but it "feels" like JL was most at ease doing it, and that his space and time theme suited the new electronics very well.
God, this song makes me feel out of place with the modern world. I'm absolutely in love with retro things, despite how I wasn't alive during the time of this album...
I think that's cyclical. We always long for the days when things were simpler, often times from before we were born by learning from our parents and the media of those times. Many people in the '80s longed to live in the '50s despite being born in the '60s and so on. Next they'll be longing for the early '00s and '10s, which is understandable given how horrid the start of this decade has been.
This is Popmusic from Heaven! There has never been made better popmusuc than this! Jeff Lynne is the King of good Music and records !!! Best wishes from Norway !!!
A lot of this song depicted the future. _A penny in your pocket, suitcase in your hand, they won't get you very far, now you're a 21st Century man_ The penny is now worth less than the costs of making each penny, and modern technology, such as laptops, tablets and even smartphones, are rendering the bulky suitcase obsolete. _Fly across the city, rise above the land_ The development of cities has resulted in faster public transport and taller buildings, most notably the Burj Khalifa. _One day you're a hero, next day you're a clown_ Advances in social media have resulted in the rapid rise and downfall of any personality, and much quicker than in previous decades.
Listened to this 1981-82-83 all the time (along with other great albums), and fell in love with and has been my favourite album since. Jeff Lynne: "We're not worthy!"
I don't know if anyone thinks the same but I think it's about how it's either a loving message about how no matter how much stuff you have, no matter if you have the opportunity to experience the future you're always gonna want be back home, back to the life your used to and the people who you love and love you back. or it's a more sinical message about how no matter how advanced we become were never gonna be happy and always gonna have something bothering us
Jeroen Stobbe well you're wrong XD but ya he does sound a bit like him but I think it because it was popular to sing like that because I also feel a bit of queen when the other people sing so I think it's just inspiration
I gave a copy of this album to mine and my brothers friend years ago and he always thanks me for introducing him too ELO he’s been a massive fan ever since. And now my sons are big fans of Jeff and ELO so I like to think I’ve spread the love for ELO
lucalone Though some people argue it might be for Marc Bolan. I also think it's for Lennon. Since Lennon liked ELO's music, named them 'son of Beatles' in a radio interview. Jeff sometimes sings with Lennon's voice and accent in this song.. Jeff's singing about 'wandering the (strawberry?) fields of your sorrow'. Although Lennon was not literally a 21st century man, he still lived in the sixties & seventies in a way most people are used to nowadays. And listening to 'Tomorrow never knows' it's obvious that Lennon's mindset sometimes was beyond that of contemporaries. The other three Beatles all lived into the 21st century, so Lennon's the only one who didn't became a 21st century man. But in the end of this song, Jeff sings 'you're NOT a 21st century man'. So, that's still in line with the truth.. ;-)
@@jaronimo1976 I was at the concert ..time tour in the band's home city Birmingham to promote the album time....I still have the ticket stub and programme....Dec 1981.....nearly 40 years ago brilliant.they opened the gig with twilight...they also played here is the news and ticket to the moon from the album....as well as other Eli classics.....shine a little love, Mr blue sky, telephone line ,sweet talking woman etc.. the date was very close to the first anniversary of the death of John Lennon and Jeff mentioned this and the band played a melody of Lennon and Beatles hits.... something I'm proud to say I was there .still love elo I had a ticket for October 2020 Glasgow to see them again but was cancelled due to covid restrictions. I really hope to see them just once more.
Yeah this song makes me cry at the very first few words at the start of this song every time I hear it! A tear jerker! 😢😢😢😢😢 Yes I had the cassette when I was 16 years old, wore the the cassette out & now have it on CD! 🙂🙂
Yes it is. Those artists are in order of age (gets a bit blurred between verdi and chopin) He's saying Lynne is as great as them, and I wouldn't disagree.
This album and particularly this song has special memories for me. I grew up in a strong musical family. At school, I was a big Beatles fan and my best mate and me were the mischief makers, always separate from the other boys because we weren't that interested in football or sport, only music. I would write silly songs about the guys who gave us a hard time and we'd sing them to wind them up. We would always sit around making up songs and he'd say we should write them down, but never did. They were just songs about where we grew up, characters we knew and TV characters like Captain Pugwash. We were both good at art, so we'd draw cartoons of our enemies and the teachers and get into trouble. We had big dreams for the future. My friend wanted us to be the new Lennon and McCartney. I was always going on about running away from home, so much so that my mum bought an ornament of a boy wearing a baker boy cap, carrying a sack on a stick slung over his shoulder. I think my friend must have saw it one day sitting on top of the TV. Shortly afterwards he gave me his ELO Time album and jokingly remarked that there was a song on there about me and maybe I would sing it one day. I didn't pay attention at the time until later on when I was curious about the mark on a particular track on the album cover. It was 21st Century Man. He always tried to encourage me and I didn't even notice it, so I guess this was his message to me.
I remember listening to ELO on the radio back in the day but never realised til now just how bloody brilliant they were musically...I'm just discovering so many hidden gems of theirs 💎🎧👌
I got this album years ago as a Christmas present, back in the Eighties, and I still have it. Thanks for sharing one of my favorite songs on this album.
It's 1981 again whenever I hear this song... very nostalgic... also one of the 12 people who saw the off, off, off, broadway Rock Opera starring now famous, but then obscure stars of stage and screen... What a glorious 4 days that was... ;-)
I started listening to ELO since Eldorado, but I have missed this album except for Ticket to the Moon. I just discovered The Lights Go Down and The Way Life's Meant to be last night, and this morning I just stumbled into my "NEW" favorite song - 21st Century Man! God, what have I been doing since 1981??? Better late than never, though😄
Has a definite George Harrison feel to it melodically and when the solo is taken imitating a Harrison solo. I like when Jeff Lynne uses his various voices to paint a picture with the lyrics.
Something Beautiful guys... I heard it like a kid i got this album on CD 20 years ago. Love You. ELO first guys in electronic dance music. Cheers from Poland !
I just saw Jeff Lynne and his new version of elo in concert for the first time after loving this band for 50 years. I was even a member of the fan club in junior high school! It was a great concert, in cleveland, but he did not do a single song from this album. And this is one of my top three albums by him, along with ElDorado and a new world record!
When my dad used to turn this album on in the car in the 90s, neither of us even knew english, just enjoyed the tunes. Little did we know we were listening to a prophecy 😄
I first knew ELO's music when I was in high school, and I was a fan enough to have their LP. I've been forgetting it for a while, and I just listened to it because I suddenly remembered... It reminds me of the old days... Past pain is happiness, but why was it so hard back then... With my longing and love for this song, my game and TH-cam ID is also 21ThCenturyMan.
Being born in its year of release and having had the album played in our home almost daily during my first year of living (and then not heard by me again until I was about 30), some of the melodies, intros and songs strike something beyond description deep within me. This is probably the song that moves me the most. In fact, I am afraid to listen to it too much from fear that the gut feeling I get from it, as it were, might somehow evaporate.
You know you're someone with good taste in music when you put this on loop and listen to it for 6 hours straight, then move on to the rest of the songs in the album.
This song is a tribute to John Lennon, whom Jeff Lynn admired. Sadly, John was killed a year before ELO’s 1981 “TIME” album was released. Later on, Jeff Lynn would produce the Beatles’ “Free As a Bird” (1994), which was assembled after John’s demise. 💙🎵💜

3:14 While you look to tomorrow for your glory and success, you still live in the past (sorrows). This ruins your "now" which is the only turth of it all. It's all imagination. The only people who benefit from your success don't give a fk about you. Thank you to ELO for planting these seeds when I was 11 ('81).
"One day you're a hero, the next day you're a clown."
I feel like alot of internet celebrities could relate to this quote.
So true...
I can't help but notice how perhaps the majority of the lyrics of this song have come true in some form or another.
Cause Jeff Lynne is genius
Time was a visionary album. I know no other. And i still wonder how Jeff knew back then. The 80ies were a time of gr8 hope. But there was already a seed of doubt. Still, magic how he managed to expand on that back then and be so right.
"Ticket to the Moon " haven't came true yet.
Dead right, it's so sad how isolated many people are today.
It was way too accurate, I just escaped from satellite 2 last week.

That short jingle after "You stepped out of a dream". I wish they had included more of it. Amazing.

I was born in 2010 and I still love this song till today.
Meravigliosa!❤
Magnifique. Quel mélodie merveilleux.
Без высокопарных слов,но группа великая.Спасибо mr.J.lynne✨🛸✨
Being born in its year of release and having had the album played in our home almost daily during my first year of living (and then not heard by me again until I was about 30), some of the melodies, intros and songs strike something beyond description deep within me. This is probably the song that moves me the most. In fact, I am afraid to listen to it too much from fear that the gut feeling I get from it, as it were, might somehow evaporate.
You can definitely hear The Flaming Lips taking a good amount of influence from this song, especially on albums like Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi
A song for John Lennon? A great beatiful song!! I' m listening in 1982..
Such a beautiful song!
You know you're someone with good taste in music when you put this on loop and listen to it for 6 hours straight, then move on to the rest of the songs in the album.
amen comrade.
Unbelievable E.L.O and unforgettable 21st C' man !!
jeff your are the music master
"One day you're a hero ,next day you're a clown". How true is that?
beautiful.
Now we are here. But.
Still under the Electric Light shinin' even brighter in the Century 21...
😀🖐🏻🥁✌️🏻
This song is a tribute to John Lennon, whom Jeff Lynn admired. Sadly, John was killed a year before ELO’s 1981 “TIME” album was released.
Later on, Jeff Lynn would produce the Beatles’ “Free As a Bird” (1994), which was assembled after John’s demise. 💙🎵💜
Thanks, interesting! I was a fan of both of them. No wonder, similarity.
Behold our utterly miserable modern world in 2017. Who would ever have thought we'd end up with so much, yet so little ? These guys did.
2020 called, they asked what the hell you were talking about
@@PapaHepatitis7170 we'll look back at 2020 one day and laugh, take it easy.
Saw them in concert way back. Damn it was one of the best I’ve been to.
Um dos melhores
Pretty song about disappointment, future shock and alienation.
wonderful song.
This song is definitly the answer why Jeff is the fifth Beatle!
First music of the 80's that I really love!
Nice music!

this song was a prophecy
Блестящий, яркий, самодостаточный альбом электриков!!!Гениально!
Still luvin this 21st Century sound! Love to you always Jeff Lynne and Group! 💖🌹 🎵 💖
Me encanta esta música 😊
This song always take my mind far away.
Fantastic song!!!!!!!!!!!
СПАСИБО!!!!
Que buena es, siempre le he encontrado como un toque oriental 👍🏻
Happy New Year folks
Sigue siendo una melodía tan preciosa ❤
It is the best song for me. When I heard it for the first time, 21-st Century was so far away, but now I'm that men from this song. Sadly.
