    you could add a magnetic knife holder to the lid to make thing easier
    - you have done a really really nice build in this unit

    In Australia we call it a tucker box, but your design works so much better!

    Nice Work!! In the early 60's ,Boy Scouts we made boxes like yours.These were a bit bigger.Had boards that not only used for a stand but as handles.

    I still have one I built about 25 years ago. Mine was also made from one sheet of plywood, but I can open it from both or either sides so two cooks can each have their own countertop area and can access the interior Counter tops are covered with Formica. It stands on removable legs made from EMT conduit that also support the open countertops. The stove sits at a convenient height on two conduit bars that slide out from the bottom at either end of the unit and cooking utensils hang above the stove. I always stood the legs on 3 inch squares of plywood that I would put ground cinnamon on to keep ants and other bugs out of the box. Ants HATE cinnamon.
    I haven't used it in several years, mostly because I don't car camp as much anymore but it still holds the venerable Coleman stove and can of fuel, water jug, and all the paraphanalia for cooking and serving food. I suppose it will all require a major scrubbing before it is used again. It was great for week long camping trips at the lake but was heavy and a bit of a pain to get set up on the legs. Once set up, though, it made camp food prep and cleanup a breeze.

    I built one of these from a Boy Scout Pattern. One thing I added were drawers to the build. saves loads on organization.

    Great chuckwagon style camp box! I was looking for something to use in my ‘78 VW Bus which is not really a camper but more of a weekender and this will be the perfect solution! Cheers and thanks for sharing! 👍👍😎

    You said a very smart thing about the enamel cookware - food gets cold fast due to thermal conductivity. Someone else said the same. He also has Corelle plates and bowls. You can also use them in a microwave or oven in case of an RV.
    This is an elegant box build, very lovely. Quite roomy but compact in depth for easy storing back of car.

    • @rigwhisperer
      @rigwhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you MJ! Yes, I plan to pick up Corelle next time it’s on sale

    • @nomadmarauder-dw9re
      @nomadmarauder-dw9re ปีที่แล้ว

      Enamel ware also chips. When it does, you'll get rust spots. And on the way to getting cold, it gets HOT. TBH, Corelle isn't any better on that, but it won't break with normal care. Lighter than stoneware too. Plastics are really best, as they don't get as hot to handle.
      If you've got kids old enough to handle it, the old style G.I. mess kits are good. Repros are cheap and more plentiful than you think. But stick with plastic for drinkware.
      The two box method seems to be a better choice. Stove and cookware in one ( heavy) and dinnerware in the other. And don't forget a good bucket!

    That reminds me of the one we had in scouts. The Scout master had legs put on and a chain on each side of the door so it could be a table/counter space.

    Very clean and functional design. My family does a lot of camping and I’ve thought many times of building a chuck box; the idea of having everything in one “package” is appealing. However, when I really think through the pro and cons, I think it would be heavy and awkward to pack and unpack staying with a couple of plano boxes and stove packed loose means each item is manageable size/weight and can be packed around the rest of our gear.

  • @stephenrichie4646
    @stephenrichie4646 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Years ago when my boys were small I made something similar. It was okay but hard to handle. Heavy and bulky. Later packed our kit in smaller units. Found it more a more flexible system.

    I just cut all my wood for this and plan to have seasonings in the lid, just like yours. Can you give me a measurement from the bottom of the box to the bottom of your shelf? I'm trying to decide where to place mine so there is room underneath for olive oil, yet my stove (identical to yours) sits nice in the top with still having room for the spice rack.

    I don't use propane. I use butane. I have problems with the fumes from propane and not butane. I have a 1 burner Coleman butane camp stove. I also have a Coleman mini-burner for the threaded canisters of butane (isobutane). They both work great for me in the house and for outdoor use. Most food I cook can be done in my 1L camp pot which has a small pan used as the top and both have the fold-in handles for packing space. It has a carry bag they fit in snug.

    the fuel bottle ? there has to be a better way ?it's simi permanent lock the stove down and plumb a hose and mount the fuel bottle ? why are the spices always so hard to use why do the cups have to be moved , a utensil drawer ? do you have to have the whole box on another flat surface for the table to be used ?

    I've been looking at making something like this. You've done a really nice job of yours. I was wondering about the ergonomics of them. When you are actually cooking, do you put the front door back up? It seems like it'd be awkward to cook when the front is down and pushing you away from the box.

    1:06 "Corningware" ??? As far as I can tell, Corningware doesn't make any metal plates. Even eBay doesn't list any vintage metal Corningware items. You must mean something else.

    • @carmenolivieri279
      @carmenolivieri279 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is recommending that you avoid using any metal dishes because they cause the hot food to cool too quickly. He is suggesting Corningware glass dishes and bowls because they are very durable and lightweight and might not suck heat from your food as quickly. I discovered this long ago and found Corningware works great for car camping.

    • @wandablomberg
      @wandablomberg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might check out Corelle ware I believe in the 60's it was referred to as melmac
      Lightweight, doesn't break or chip. However, I think it is like metal, it doesn't keep food warm very long. check this out before purchase if hot food is important to you.

    • @sarukravitz4981
      @sarukravitz4981 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After doing some research, I think he meant to say ENAMELWARE which is actually metal coated in a porcelain lining.
