What a pleasure to listen to such a scholar. I have found Hans Kung as being my brightest star for enlightenment. But, at age 59, I am not a Christian. I don't believe in any Christian Dogma, at all, except that there is a Creator(God). I see no answer to the question of Theodicy other than REINCARNATION and KARMA. It does not matter how much you de-mythologize the essential point of Christianity: The ATONEMENT. That theological concept only seems to work for SOME part of the population, times past, as now. Not for me. As I grow older, I recognize that NO-ONE has the truth. Even the most enlightened mystics of history. As I get older I realize I have to accept being me and with my limited understanding. As an American Anglophile, was that a Scottish Accent? I really enjoyed how you spoke an educated English. Take Care.

Very good. Wish this view was more of a driving force today.

Much of Bultmann's classical form criticism has been strongly challenged by the latest research on oral and eyewitness tradition, rendering it mostly obsolete. James Dunn and Richard Bauckham have largely laid waste to much of Bultmann's premises.

Form criticism is by no means obsolete. If you believe that there was a Jesus of history, then it follows that the teachings of Jesus had an original oral form; the written gospels then modified this oral form as they adapted Jesus' teachings to a written format. Form criticism attempts to recover the original oral form of Jesus' teachings. This oral form would show how Jesus delivered his teachings in his own historical context. Deny form criticism and you run the risk of losing the historical Jesus altogether.

Michael Dodd : The historical Jesus is not that important: It is our faith in Gods influence and presence today that is important. Both the NT and OT are filled with myths, that we need to interpret in a modern context to understand them today.

Thanks Michael. That's a very interesting comment. I suppose it all comes down to interpretation. For me the Reformed Protestant church has the most accurate interpretation.

@ MaxGravitas "laid waste to Bultmann's premise" really! How do you lay waste to the common sense premise that the new testament was written in the first century and should be reinterpreted

@Paul Nurmi German thought is pretty misty. The Scots Scholar is trying, with difficulty, to make sense of the often nonsensical way of reasoning which German thinkers, alone, can make appear profound. No surprises to hear Heidegger was Bultmann's colleague and friend. One hears the sage of the Black Forest in these interpretations of the life of the simple but profound shepherd in first century Palestine.
