I’m 44 now and I have one of these that I got from a classmate in trade during elementary school I think. I’ve kept it all these years and it’s always been my prized baseball card and made me a huge frank thomas fan before I got into high school and changed my attention to cars and girls. Your video helped me confirm that mine is in fact authentic, even though I always knew it was. It’s the one card that brings me back into the hobby every now and then for some junk wax ripping. Thanks for bringing back a good memory from my youth.

No joke...im 44 as well and I have one! Haven't had it graded. Got it out of a pack...i lived in Iowa. LUCKILY my cousin spotted it when we were probably 14 and he knew what it was...I was clueless at the time. The big hurt was my favorite player then too. I played first because I wanted to be him lol.
I always wondered if getting it autographed would be a bad idea.
Great video...i pull it out about every 5 years and take a look.

I would love to have one. I think they try not to stop the presses if possible cause every time they restart the press ink takes a few minutes to redistribute itself on plates rollers and more than likely they always throw away the first several sheets cause of ink issues. So I think the quality control just didn't see the ink missing and started letting it go down the line. I worked for the newspaper down here for 15 years about 20 years ago. Great info Mike.

Yes, I pulled one out of a vending box back in 1991-92 ish (I'm pretty certain it came from a vending box)... I remember it vividly because I felt like a got a "defective" Frank Thomas, and was concerned it had little value because it wasn't listed as an error/variation in Beckett at the time, so I was like "meh", lol... And I don't recall what I did with it. I know I traded or sold it way before it was ever in Beckett... But yea, I'm pretty sure it was a vending box tho - because I remember the blue box... Well, unless I was storing my 1990 stars in a vending box - that would make sense too, lol... But yea, that jazz is it's own "story"... I ended up with cases and cases (15-20 cases)of "junk wax" - mostly stuff from 88-90, tho there were a handful of boxes before 88.. I remember I had 1/3rd of a box of 85 Topps and I DID pull the McGwire, so I was pumped about that as a kid... But again that junk wax find is it's own story I should post some day..

Some 25 years ago at a local flea market a guy was trying to pedal one off for $30 which I thought was steep for a fairly new card. Wish I Had have had a crystal ball!! Errors are subjective, like blank back cards. The Beatles Introducing the Beatles album with a blank back is worth a good bit. A blank back of a rookie or Hall of Famer, some say it's not an error but printing mistake. Same thing.

I took printing in high school and have a degree in design which covered printing as well, so I'm always interested in this stuff. It's pretty strange for sure and trying to remember the process I used when printing? I do have a 1957 Topps Gene "Bakep" error and with that card, there was a piece of paper or filament, but this looks like something besides cleaning solution got in the way? It's pretty interesting. Very interesting theories / back story. Random, but I pulled the Printing Plate for Altuve's "blank error" ASG card from 2020 Chrome Update where the ASG symbol is on the wrong side & the area it's supposed to be is just blank chrome. Same goes for the front bottom middle, but I'm not sure what's supposed to be there. (I just checked lol)
Also, it is CRAZY to think Thomas wasn't 1 of the Top Prospects back then esp after what he did at Auburn, BUT in reality, the scouts were pretty clueless back in those days when you look at who they had as their top prospects! 🙄

  • @TheFaithfulAtheist

I seem to remember that The Big Hurt was fairly popular before the MVP and was in fact seen as a top prospect as he was coming up. The 1990 Leaf Thomas #300 was the card to pull from those packs even at the time. Then again, I was an early teen at the time and could easily be misremembering the timeline.
As for the theory on how the error came to be, I had heard more than once (albeit 20+ years ago) that a scrap of cardboard had fallen into the press, stuck to the spot it landed on, and simply blocked the black ink from the cardboard. This, to me, seems more likely because if it were a cleaning solution issue, you would think there would be a spectrum of versions with varying levels of ink/smudgery. All the copies I've seen of the Thomas (which is clearly the most affected card) and of other affected cards look the same in this regard, and show a 100% loss of the black ink in question.
Just my thoughts. I could be wrong.

I spent too much time and fortunately not too much money trying to luck into one... bought lots of junk wax in the process... blowout forums had a good bit of info on it... most interesting thing was how many years it took for the details to emerge on the likely cause... I have read of every conceivable Topps packaging being 'the only one' that would include a NNOF, so pretty sure that's simply unknown... I disagree that the other partial blackless players/cards have no value... clearly not serious value, but they are sought after...

It's amazing (and disheartening) how so many big-ticket singles prices have dropped so far over the past year. It seems that the pandemic-fueled mania lasted into early 2022, but by spring there were intelligent warning signs. As far as those dreamers who poured big money into untested cards from the past few years, they got what they deserved. But I feel bad about the cards that are more than a couple decades old. The photo explanation of how the No Name occurred is the most likely explanation. I have worked at a printing company for years and have seen some “weird” things occur on paper. It is almost impossible to catch everything. Mistakes happen. No, we do not print sports cards. The side-by-side comparison of a genuine error card with the fake error card verifies the “plate cleaning solution “ explanation. Kudos to your research. I do have the Billy Ripken FF error. Hardly not, what is a 10 to one employee isn't to another. What if a person is having a bad day or in a bad mood, no way a card gets a 10 that is reality.
