Should have set up a restraining order against the MIL. Forcing your way into someone else's home is breaking and entering and tresspassing. Trying to take someone's child is attempted kidnapping.
My mother did the the same thing becuase she didn't like my husband. she swore that my husband was abusing all of us. So I called her bluff on day and dialed 911 and handed the phone to her. They came out and told her to not call them again for this or they would arrest her. She died 25 years later with dementia. We didn't realize it was starting back then.

Because Men shouldn't raise another man's kids as its sub optimal. It doesn't mean the woman is bad but it does mean there is more to the story How can a woman be married to a man and have two kids but on the other hand say "The kids don't know any man as their dad" Red flags.
