Yes, his father is dead. Horse is not the God, if we pray - wish to God for something, you can pray to God that you'll buy him a sand made horse if he made you realise your wish. After you got what you want, you should buy him a horse. This prayer method is popular there.
Salangai means anklet, not challenge.
Actually challenge is not the right usage of word there. It should be 'vow' .
The movie is about the difference between a traditional dance with carnatic music and tamil folk dance.
The folk dance hero and heroine who excels in bharathanatiyam (classical dance) fell in love with each other.
But when heroine's father knows this, he thought the folk dance is not at all a dance and it's low. So, he won't accept the love.
When hero's father came to know about their love, he wanted to make his son happy, so he went to heroine's house to ask for her hand in marriage for his son. But the heroine's father insulted him and his dance.
Hero's father was so sad and go back to his son and make him vow that he has to make this folk dance popular and (I forgot, something like fight or something will happen later on)
His father will die. He took his father's body in a hidden place so he could make his last wish come true. That's this song.
(I forgot one scene where the heroine will drink poison and dance for a song because that was reserved before. When everyone except heroine's father came to know but reamin silent coz she was smiling and dancing. Hero was also informed about this, when hero arrived, after some words in song for him, she'll fall down. Hero will take her to hospital.) (I don't know when this will happen.)
At the end, heroine's father will have a change of heart and accept them.
The song 'margali thingal allava' will make you cry. Amazing song with a touch of unforgettable love.

Here is a Gist of the movie :
Two artists of different art forms meet in a cultural fest and fall in love. The female lead is well versed in an art form that's dominated by higher caste people , whereas the hero belongs to lower caste and his art is often associated to lower caste or rural people. Despite of these differences, they fall in love. But the girl's father opposes their relationship. The girl's father challenges if the hero can collect more money by having a concert of his art form.
This song is the climax of the movie , where the the girl's dad's allies kill the hero's dad in fear of losing. Despite his dad being dead , the hero conducts the concert ( this song ) and wins the challenge and marries the girl.
This movie clearly shows the caste differences between people and their arts. The message it conveys is "art is above any caste or race or religion and so is Love"

As he made a bet with the person who is coming atlast in the car,that folk dance(a traditional rural dance) will win than the classical dance.
One of the villains hunch men stabs hero's father and he will die later.
So he's singing to his father(his teacher and protector everything) don't die before we win the bet/challenge but he's already dead but still he wants his father to be there with him when he wins the challenge

This is movie is about 2 music bands,
1.Heroine is from the classical band ( which is concerned as very pure form of art, plus it's for rich people ) as per heroine's dad
2. Hero's band is the traditional folk one( Though they don't make much money as classical band they still keep doin that to entertain people no matter who they're) and they shouldn't give up on their tradition as per hero's dad.
One day all the bands will plan to construct a building for them to perform and the classical band will insult the traditional band saying they can't make as much money as the classical can and how can you afford to contribute for the building.
So they'll challenge eachother for a dance off to see who can raise more money through their dance. mean time hero's dad will be killed hoping it will stop his son from performing, still he'll choose to dance in front of people to keep up his dad's promise and win !
