      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Western NY State ... close enough. Actually Steve P and the rest of Journey had a falling out. They got another singer ... sounds just like Steve P.
      A tiny tidbit ... I saw them on their kickoff night with the tour they're on right now with Def Leppard. I was always a huge Neal Schon fan and liked Journey, and was so-so on Def Leppard. I'll be darned if my opinion didn't do a complete 180 on me. Def Leppard was great - tons of energy, good sound, great interaction with the audience. Just a great show. Journey on the other hand ... the best two things were (1) the new singer's energy and (2) Ainsley Dunbar's drum solo. Neal was so disappointingly self-indulgent, and the sound was mush. They did a few good ones, but generally weren't good. At the end of the show it was pretty emptied out.

    • @michaelmendillo4614
      @michaelmendillo4614 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Zabel I met Ainsley Dunbar actually, with oddly enough, Eric Burdon. He was doing a gig in Long Island and was Eric's drummer. They ended up doing a backyard gig for some "well to do" people in Ct. I was invited, since my friend booked them,,I have a pic with Eric, and like the guitar player I am didn't know Ainsley from hole in the wall. I ended up getting drunk with him on a 50yr old bottle of scotch ! Lol, he actually got pissed at me because I poored a drink without pouring him one ! So I apologized and filled his glass to the top (it was a good size glass) and he just smiled and said, my kind of man,, hahaha, it was a great night to say the least ! I also smoked with Eric, he loves his smoke ! And woman ! I will send you the pic of him and I,,,, 😁🖒

    7:49 ... pro tip (for me anyway): invert middle and ring fingers... it lets your ring finger take an angle (pointing back toward the head of the guitar) that makes pinky reach easier. Ben Eller says to bar with ring finger, but my ring finger is too squishy for that. Thanks for the lesson. Very nice!

      @@MarkZabel You know, I don't like my own idea at this point. Now I've gone to index and middle finger playing the power cord. The stretch is so easy for the pinky ... the ring finger just hangs around, useless. ;)

    I have found a way to play the verse riff that enables me to really dig in and get a lot of juice and curb appeal out of it. It may be fun for you to try. .Instead of using an E-position barre and going root-5th, root 6th, root b7thon the 6th and 5th strings, try playing the Root on the 5th string, 3rd frets then playing the 5thm 6th, b7 all on the G string , pulling the A and the Bboff to the open G. Then you can use the F on the D string to really make it flow. Sounds way snappier, and with those notes all pulling off to the open G, all kinds of things, besides that F on the D string wanting to get touched. It would be interesting to see if anyone finds this way the way to play Walk this way.that they like best today. (yeah, I know -goofy) Burt This way is a potentially smoking way to do this if done with the right set of hands.:)

      Bill, that will work, although I need the practice on the boogie woogie pinkie. Using your technique, you can also hybrid pick it, that is use your pick on the fifth string and use your finger to pluck the notes on the g string.

    For the grove part, my hands are just slightly below average (I'm 5'7), and I can only do that stretch on a 24 scale like my Jaguar. It's tough even on a Gibson scale, I just have to move my 2nd finger when reaching with the pinky. Slash played it live starting with is index finger at third fret, and shifting it up to the 5th fret.. not sure exactly what he's doing will need to slow it down... I can do it really well in the 5th fret position, with pinky playing the C note on the 8th fret, and the other notes on the third and fourth strings, but then the tone of the first note doesn't match...damn. I am sure there is a way, and I'm determined to find it lol ... I am actually looking at 24 scale strats, if I can find a good one I may just stick with the jaguar and short scale strat!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, good observation. I tried it out today. Works great! I thought it was easier, so thanks! I think you've got to still pick each note though to get it to sound right.

    • @bpdarragh
      @bpdarragh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkZabel Thanks Mark, once you get your head arounbd the slide it does work better. The 4th note on the D string does have to be played with an upstroke though, so plectrum is played down, up down (on low E) then up on A. A guy called Justin GUitar has a good lesson on this.Not that yours isnt, just with his alternate fingering

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bpdarragh Yep. Either way you play it (slide or separate fingers) you should pick the note else it will sound like the Run DMC version. Which way makes more sense is up to you ... kind of depends on how good your pinky finger is.
      It's true that alternate picking then also gives you an upstroke on the 4th string, but even if you play all downstrokes like the jazz players used to be taught (better, stronger tone on downstrokes), you shouldn't just hammer-on because it's not going to sound aggressive enough.
      As an FYI, I actually don't really care much about how it was played, only how it sounds - and whether it sounds right. We all have different fingers, so need to solve our own puzzles differently. "How-to's" are really just recipes. In the end you actually have to do the cooking! :)
      One last thing. No worries being compared to Sandercoe. He's great!
