Oil rigs aren’t that dangerous. I was working as a nurse in an offshore rig in the North Sea that was technically Norwegian. After seeing American rigs I can say the Norwegian ones were slightly more tightly run. However, my job didn’t present huge dangers…the roughnecks and roustabouts were in more danger, lots of burns and crushing injuries. The problem is TONS of drinking and gambling. They’ll take anyone on a rig and the amount of monetary compensation is INSANE, so you couple that with people who have maybe some impulse control issues or felonious pasts and yeah, it gets dangerous. I can say that it was dangerous coming and going to the rig, we’d be helicoptered in or taken out in incredibly hostile waters and then you’re climbing scaffolding (with gear) but still, all conditions. There’s never a doctor, so as the nurse I had to deal with every sort of injury as the first line of defense. I’d have a doc on land to guide me through some stuff if we had to medivac someone out. Lots of injuries were minor but those big ones? Terrifying. And yeah, I guess the death rate is high but it’s due to the lack of swift intervention. You just bleed out. We usually had just two nurses at most. I only lasted six months. You’re two on two off with rig work, and they pay for your EVERYTHING. So after two weeks offshore and two in a decent apartment on land you get paid for four weeks. You can just bank every cent too, unless you have a vice. Lots of dudes had vices. So Much Gambling And that’s why it gets a bad rap, you’re not seeing how crazy wealthy you can get from these rig gigs.

Also them having a horrible living space there does not make them slaves, and they weren’t forced to work in Saudi Arabia
