      Very underrated. And might I add that he not only beat the hell out of a set of drums, but he did it with exquisite precision and an unshakable groove. We were fortunate to have Tony.

    Tony was an absolute monster - he doesn't get the respect he deserves because he's too often thought of as a "disco" drummer: but a disco drummer with enough balls to play with Led Zeppelin. RIP Tony - miss ya - big time.

      That's right. I remember reading an interview with Chic and Tony mentioned how he was into rock and other music as well. It was hard to imagine though listening to Chic.Lol

      And Chic are too often thought of as just 'disco'. Chic albums are packed full with musicians' chops, tasty chord sequences and wonderful grooves. You're meant to dance to it but it's FAR more thsn just 'disco'.

    Tony was the main reason I was a fan, initially. When they were hot, I was still a kid and even though I knew the other members from their other works, It was his drumming that really, really caught my attention....and still does. Over the years I realized he played for so many other artist as a session musician. As I look back now, it was always his drumming in the other artist songs that got my attention even though I didnt know it was him at the time. Anyway, I'll always be fan and it's a shame we lost both he and Robert so soon! We miss ya!

      I'm 39 years old and started playing drums in 85. I was in second grade and remembered hearing some like it hot on the radio one morning on the way to school and fell in love with your brothers style of playing and to this day your brothers style is a huge ingredient in my style of playing...God Rest his soul, He was taken way too soon.

      Tony was one of the reasons I started playing drums. I used to love to watch him play..those long, fluid arm movements and the way he seemed both relaxed , yet intense behind the drum kit.

    Not the same without Robert Palmer.
    Tony was a great drummer and from what I can see he was intelligent and pleasant to talk to.
    Michael Des Barres is very good as a frontman, but he didn't have Roberts signature voice or presence.
    John Taylor is a fine bassist and did a good job on this.

    😂What kind of look was that from John at the end when he said Duran would tour next summer?

    • @enbbug1
      @enbbug1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A look of wondering if Andy Taylor was actually going to show up and finish his parts for the Notorious album I bet. Two band members of Duran did not re-enter the fold, if I've got it correct. A paired down 'version,' of Duran would tour that summer. I got to see them for that show. John Taylor and Steven Ferone were an amazing pairing.

    • @jtmichaelson
      @jtmichaelson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tony Thompson is underrated because he never makes the lists of the best drummers hardly ever. He's never spoken about when they speak of greatest drummers. I've NEVER seen Tony on any list above the Top 40. Such a shame, too. I've followed his drumming since I was learning to play drums in 1979. Power Station were good, but his drumming and Robert Palmer's vocals drove them to be as memorable as they are.

    DesBarres was a poor choice for stepping in for Robert Palmer. Tough for anyone to follow Robert but DesBarres just can't sing very well at all and so it didn't work on any level...apart from the party aspect before and after the shows.

      MDB is a great singer in his own right, he was an emergency replacement on the tour.The PS was just gonna do an album but it took off huge and tour dates were added but Robert Palmer had other obligations..so enter Michael.

    • @enbbug1
      @enbbug1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda agree. He may have grown on me though (slightly). I've wondered what a studio track of MDB would've sounded like in Power Station.
