Beastie Boys are the highest selling rap group of all time. Chuck D and LL Cool J inducted them into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame, being the third rap group to ever do so. The Beastie Boys actually discovered LL Cool J. Throughout their beginning initial success they asked NWA and Public Enemy to join them as openers on their tour. They were friends with Rick Rubin in college before he went on to start Def Jam records and immediately signed the Boys. They have seven platinum-selling albums, one diamond, from 1986 to 2004. They are the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991 and the first to have a rap album go to #1. They are true hip hop royalty, you stumbled on to the Larry Bird of rap groups. MCA passed away from cancer in 2012. He was the groups engine and originally started the band - they were a punk band. He kept pushing for innovation and in later years became an advocate for human rights and started the Tibetan Freedom Festival. When he died, Beastie Boys died too.
    RIP Adam, MCA forever.

RIP MCA, always missed, never forgotten! Excellent summation, came here to do the same, no need to now, props!! The only thing I'll add is that their sophomore album, Paul's Boutique (considered a commercial flop at the time, especially compared to their debut album), pretty much paved the way for sampling music/sounds in hip-hop music. Today it's considered one of the holy texts in hip-hop culture, and a must listen for any up n coming hip-hop/rap artist if they want to know the roots of the genre they're getting into.

This is simply Hip Hop. How can anyone deny that? Great stuff! We discovered Hip Hop in the 80's.Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, LL Cool J, and The Beastie Boys. They were signed to Def Jam when they started. We wanted Hip Hop to go this route, like with A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes and the like. We were so disappointed when it changed.

Beastie Boys are 100% hip hop. Despite maintaining an old school approach to bars, their rhymes are always honest, and their beats are always fresh. It's what had kept them mainstream over the years and gotten them popular radio play. My 2 cents anyway.

Ya, they were signed, they practically started Def Jam, Adrock finding LL Cool Js demo, their first rap single was the 2nd release ever on Def Jam. Their debut album Licensed to ill was the first rap album to go #1 on the Billboards Top 200. They had a falling out and went and got signed by Capitol Records and the rest is history, platinum albums, #1 records, Grammy Awards, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame etc etc..... they guys are the GOATs. Keep going down the rabbit hole, they didnt make bad music ever. Their 2nd album Paul's Boutique is the greatest album of all time, a sampling masterpiece that couldn't be duplicated today.

I primarily listen to punk, rock, and metal. But was raised off hip hop because my brother is a DJ (he’s 8 years older than me.) I listened to everything growing up. Beasties Boys is definitely one of those hip hop groups that I fell in love with over the years (i was born in ‘89.)
Like you said, they don’t stick in the box. They’re lyricism, flow, and production is definitely top tier shit.
Listen to all of the album “Paul’s Boutique.” An absolute classic, and it’s known to use HUNDREDS of samples. It’s such a sick album. They also have an amazing hardcore punk album, a jazzy album (both of which they play their own instruments)
Beastie Boys are definitely a slept on group when it comes to today’s rap/hiphop listeners.
Some other tracks you should look into are
    “3 MC’s and 1 DJ”
    “Shadrach”
    “Shake Your Rump”
    “Paul Revere”
    “Too Many Rappers (feat. NaS)”
    “So What’cha Want”
There’s so many gems from them.
    R.I.P. MCA

Love hearing your enthusiasm for these guys. I was 16 when their first album, licensed to ill, came out--i grew up with them. I didn't take them seriously until their 2nd album, Paul's boutique, came out. You need to listen to that album start to finish with a good pair of headphones. It's insane. Over 100 samples on that album alone! They teamed up with the Dust Brothers who were the sampling kings at the time. There are videos on TH-cam that go through literally every sample used... it's a must watch. No other band in history sampled like these guys.
Another cool fact about the beasties is they were a hardcore punk band before turning to rap. You can definitely hear that foundation on many of their songs.

Speaking and saying things(rap) is always close to a soulful expression, compared to instruments, singing and making stuff up..Rap is fresh of the brain, close to the body, and they did some NY friendship thing. Its hones. I hate it when its compromised by the market.. even more then other music. Makes sense right? Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence are from 83.

DJ Hurricane who did the record scratching on the songs is calling each of the 3 Beastie Boys (Mike D, MCA & Ad Rock) up to the mic to do their part in this video. The song Sure Shot is off their 4th album ILL COMMUNICATION in 1994. Their 1st album LICENCE TO ILL came out in 1986. You can't go wrong with any song on that 1 really (it's my fav). But they were making music from the 1980s to the 2000s--so you have a LOT of material to go through. Looking at what you've already reacted to, everything you've done so far was from albums in the 1990s (so the middle of their discography).

3 mcs and 1 DJ. They started with Rick Rubin on turn tables, then DJ, Hurricane was their DJ for a few years until Mix Master Mike took over their last 15 years. They also have Mario C. for the keyboards on a couple albums. When Beastie Boys started in 1978, they had more members. Including Kate Shellenbach on drums. The beasties are an amalgum of the Beastie Boys and The young and the Useless(adrocks earlier band) Beasties 1978-2012. Just like watching basketball ONLY when Jordan played., The ONLY hip hop I could listen to was Run Dmc and the Beastie Boys.

These guys had the 1st platinum selling rap album EVER! True pioneers. They continued to put to shame the likes of 3rd bass, R. Van winkle and Eminem. They were the band that STARTED DEF JAM RECORDS, then they left them after the first album (they got screwed out of a lot of money) The Beasties are one of the rare RAP groups that actually can and do play guitar, drums and bass on albums. If you do not play a musical instrument, you are not a musician. These guys are from Low East side of Manhattan(Adam Horowitcz and Michael Diamond--Ad rock and mike d) and Brooklyn Heights (MCA-Adam Yauch)

I skimmed comments and saw folks told you a bunch about their career details that you'd asked. I didn't see the mention, forgive if someone already said about where from: just 3 sweet, humble, well-behaved Jewish punk boys from Manhattan and Brooklyn. NYC in the 80s was even more a musical melting pot than it is today, you had genres and people listening and boosting each other musically massively. - Heck, the 80s itself everywhere in the US (and beyond, the UK very came out massively strong in the mix) were a huge musical cross-genre explosion. The Beastie Boys sprung out of that in hip-hop.
LOL, yeah, "You can't..." is from them!
Mike D is the one who was blond in this video.
MCA was the lowest voiced with the chin beard.
Ad-Rock was the one with highest voice in the group.
The guy you wondered about as others have said was DJ Hurricane, their DJ during this time.

I really became aware of rap when Yo! MTV Raps debuted in 88, when I was 13-14. Before that, it was hit or miss, with R&B dominating American Black music, at least in South Dallas. I became a real fan between KRS 1's 'Otta Here' and Wu-Tang Clan's 'Triumph'.
As far as rap today, it's the same as always... commercial music usually stinks, but gold is there if you look.
