this is actually horrific, my grandma was alive, still is, in the times of Hitler, she was a child yet got traumatized for life. Pretty good documentary, however one issue that arises from using existing documentaries that contain errors as source material is the perpetuation of those errors. Manstein did not single-handedly create the 'sickle-stroke' invasion plan - he had the idea for it in basic form, but worked out its fine details with Guderian. Manstein was never a tank commander and he needed Guderian to shape the plan into something feasible for tanks. Furthermore, having Guderian sign off on the plan increased its validity as a real option with the OKW. That famous sequence of the Panzer 1 driving through the river is footage from a training exercise, not the battle. There is some footage here purportedly showing motorized divisions moving toward France during the first stages of the invasion, however in fact that footage is Ewald von Kleist's motorized divisions in the Soviet Union during the battle of the Sea of Azov.

It was Manstein's Plan though. After several changes (Following the first after the German plane crash in Belgium carrying docs with the original plan), it was finally Halder who revised it - the official name being Aufmarschanweisung N°4, Fall Gelb. Halder anyway didn't like Manstein and the original plan was made by Halder which was rejected by Hitler. The final plan was given to Halder but he was ordered to follow Manstein's thinking.

1:43-1:50 "... and the United Kingdom hasn't been conquered for nine hundred years". No wonder. The United Kingdom was created in 1801. Even Great Britain has not been in existence for 900 years because was established in 1707. Perhaps the bloke is making confusion between England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. Lots of people don't know the diference. However, "the British Isles were invaded multiple times in recorded history - twice by Romans, once by Anglo-Saxons and Jutes, and at least twice by Scandinavians/Vikings (three times if you count William I as a viking). England had been also invaded by French and Dutch. Ireland had been invaded by both Vikings and English." "England had been conquered by Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and large parts were conquered by Vikings. The final conquest was by William I - a descendant of Rollo, first Viking King of Normandy. Northern Ireland was conquered by the British." (Anton Sachs, in Quora)
Yes the narrator says that Hitler never received military training which is incorrect. He was a corporal in trenches of the 1st world war where he received injuries from gas attacks. What I think the narrator means to say is that he didn’t receive a formal military education from a university. He was an enlisted man who went through the equivalent of army basic training. Him giving orders to the german generals is the equivalent of a truck driver instructing the mechanical engineers on how they should design and manufacture their engines and automobiles. Does he have some experience with the equipment? Yes. Does he understand the general shape of what a successful product looks like and how it might be improved in some areas? Yes. Beyond that he is totally lost as to the practical aspects, practices, materials, and theory behind his truck.
The French and British got their ass kicked. If it werent for the Soviet Union and United States, France and Britain would not exist. They started the war, they must deal with the consequence of their actions.. Germany humiliated them!!
Britain and France started the war? They declared war because of a pact with Poland after Germany invaded Poland. The French and British didn’t try to stop Hitler soon enough because of the Depression and still recovering from the First World War.
Germany made increasingly aggressive territorial demands, threatening war if they were not met. Then, seized Austria in 1938 and the West did nothing. Germany then demanded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia and received it…..the West did nothing Hitler was warned not to invade Poland but he did it anyway and the Allies wiped the floor with him. He pushed and pushed til Germany was utterly destroyed and occupied. The country exist now only because of generosity of the people who conquered her
this is a perfect example of not trusting what you see in front of you. and not trusting the voice of your generals who have seen what is happening on the ground. When you think you know it all, you are destined to fall
Why should the Wehrmacht have had such doubt about Hitler’s military abilities? He HAD had personal military training plus he had earned a special military award for his performance in WWI. Not to mention all of the quick victories he recently had.
Guess I spoke too soon, lol. I had known Hitler hadn’t had a good reputation as a war leader towards the end, but sometimes I wasn’t sure if that was just part of the worlds’ general hatred of him. But, this doc objectively shows that he really hadn’t had what it took to lead Germany to victory.
I pretty much only watch cop videos like DUI's, and, WW2 documentaries. I have to say, you have some of the best, and, real footage. I'm a history geek, so, thanks this is so fascinating.
Judging by the looks on some of the faces on the troops, quite a bit. There has been a few documentaries that focus on the amphetamines the Germans used.
Very large role for sure… only reason they were able to get the tanks to France so quickly was because they had their men driving them day and night on pervitin
My grand uncle perished at Stalingrad. He was just 20 years old. I still have the last letter my grandmother wrote to her brother asking why he hadn't written home for such a long time. Her letter came back unopened. My great grandmother never got over the loss of her only son. So many lifes lost just because megalomanic politicians who themselves lived in luxury while millions of people died a senseless death.
It could have ended differently if they haven't have invaded so many countries so quickly and stretched their forces so far and left the UK alone. The Soviet Union was a bridge too far, albeit it was obviously a requirement for them to defeat the communists and Stalin already saw the threat at the time. Hitler should have held off for another year at least before that operation to build further, regroup and attack after the winter. Though with the wests support for the Sovs they still may have been defeated, but they may have held it if the USA had not have gotten involved via the UK plea. Merely my thoughts.
I'm pretty sure they don't "do" documentaries, bur republish already produced one from the last 30 years or so, probably already shown on several national or private TV stations.
K glad i saw this comment. I always wonder how Perivitin isnt brought up EVERY time someone is explaining blitzkrieg. The more its studied the crazier it gets. There are a ton of written requests from German commanders for MORE of the drug, as well as concerns about dependency among soldiers.

Superb documentary!! One Everybody should watch today, cause the world, has yet again taken such a path! We seem to have forgotten the horrors of war, and now slowly, it is spreading through Autoritarian Countries, with mad men like Hitler, thirsting for power and dominans, and based on their own twisted ideologies, either political or religious. All though most of the generations during the WWII, either are very old or passed away, we should never forget these horrors, cause if we do, the history will repeat it self.
In short it could be summarised to the same mistake that dictators through history seem to have made: underestimate your enemy, overestimate your own chances/capabilities. Had Hitler listened to the advice of his generals and actually acted according to their advice especially when it came to Eastern front, the war could have ended differently. Hitler wasted so much manpower and equipment into such useless things like siege of Leningrad and assaulting and keeping Stalingrad that by avoiding these two mistakes as well as not trying to take Moscow agaisnt the winter, he could have saved hundreds of thousands soldiers
Agree, but then 200 generals with military experience followed his orders. . .Except the 20 July 1944 conspirators who tried unsuccessfully to kill him and, if may I mention, General Field Marshall Paulus and his men who surrendered in Stalingrad against Hitler’s orders.
I was born 9 years after the war ! But our parents didn’t want to talk about it. My Dad who was 16 when Pearl Harbour was attacked, could not serve and he never spoke about surviving the Japanese Occupation. It was just not spoken about.😢
42:45 "if not for those, traders we would have won long ago." Well gee if only Hillter would have read some history. He would have learned that Empires are not build in years but in decades and centuries. Attacking Russia, declaring war on America, and wasting what limited resources on fruitless campaigns. Is what lead to his downfall. Classic narcists always blaming others for his failure. If he wanted to win, then he needed to do the following. 1st: eliminate the British Army during the Battle of Dunkirk. 2nd: Arrest control of the French navy from the French. Then us it to destroy the British home fleet. 3rd: invade port smith to secure a foothold for airpower. Then use that foothold to build up combat power. 4th: With the control of Portsmouth firmly in control of the Nazi forces. Establish air superiority in the local air space. 5th: push north to London. 6th: once England is forced into a treaty of subordination. Then you disband its military and establish garrison forces in every county. 7th: Encourage the Russians to Fight the Japanese. By gifting India to the Russians. In exchange for a military alliance. 8th: Do not declare war on the United States then do everything to prevent an attack on the United States.

Finally a documentary explains how they can go through the ardennes that there were some French pilots whe reported the tank columns. All these years I was saying to myself somebody somewhere had to se 65 divisions crossing many miles of territory and reported it.
Excellent documentary of a particular part of the war -- how Hitler rose to be the adored leader of Germany and how, through his lack of knowledge, military strategy, and the nations that became his enemies, he trashed Germany, killing millions of Jews and also millions of his nation's young men, making the entire German population suffer and die for his own ego. If he had had the means to travel to the UK and America, and took a train across America, he would have had a better understanding of the USA and what we were capable of producing and doing on a war footing. When he declared war on the US he sealed his fate -- death like a diseased rat in a maze of damp and stuffy bunkers. He had only a limited education and was not real bright. He had an image of himself as grand, a born leader; but he was not; I can easily see why a few of his generals tried to do him in. They knew what a weak person he was. Lots of rare footage in this one also -- the women walking up a street in Berlin hauling their belongings, suddenly stopped by gunfire and not knowing which way to go to get safe. Buildings collapsing all around the street.
Great documentary but Hitler went after Stalingrad more for its name. You guys YOURSELF covered this in the SS Documentary you made. Capturing the oil fields first was of essence.
Even if they took the oil fields somewhat intact they had no expertise nor equipment to take advantage of it nor the means to get it where it was needed most. Even the Japanese had a far better plan to exploit the Dutch Indies oil their issue was a lack of merchant shipping and being spread too thin to protect their oil by convoy. But at least they had a plan and the equipment to exploit it the Dutch set the oil fields on fire just like the USSR did but the Japanese had oil production back close to prewar levels in only 3 months. The Germans were quite incompetent at times and a lot of that was Hitler flying by the seat of his pants so often which the film did a decent job of conveying.
15:20 Nope, that's not fully correct. Hitler had a very similar plan in his mind like the one Manstein presented him. That was the reason why he approved Manstein's plan very fast. Because he had similar ideas. So, more or less correct would be to say: they had both the idea. (I think it was in Volker Ulrich's Hitler Biography were this is mentioned.)

Ireland had been invaded by both Vikings and English."
"England had been conquered by Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and large parts were conquered by Vikings. The final conquest was by William I - a descendant of Rollo, first Viking King of Normandy. Northern Ireland was conquered by the British." (Anton Sachs, in Quora)
cry us a river... we all know what they meant.
How can you say that Hilter was never a soldier when he was quite famously known for being a soldier in WW1???
They said officer
Oò⁹and
Never made it to the rank of officer, let alone general
@processtechnician6145This
Yes the narrator says that Hitler never received military training which is incorrect.
Nice work. thx.

Honest question. In the end, what was the result of all of Hitler’s doings?

This documentary was produce by ARTE CHANEL I watched it in French a year ago . they translate it to English.
@@rogeryoung5180 You just agreed with my accusation. Thank you.
Germany made increasingly aggressive territorial demands, threatening war if they were not met. Then, seized Austria in 1938 and the West did nothing. Germany then demanded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia and received it…..the West did nothing
Hitler was warned not to invade Poland but he did it anyway and the Allies wiped the floor with him. He pushed and pushed til Germany was utterly destroyed and occupied. The country exist now only because of generosity of the people who conquered her
@@rogeryoung5180So you have never heard about what happened in Bromberg in the summer of 1939?

Why should the Wehrmacht have had such doubt about Hitler’s military abilities? He HAD had personal military training plus he had earned a special military award for his performance in WWI. Not to mention all of the quick victories he recently had.
Guess I spoke too soon, lol. I had known Hitler hadn’t had a good reputation as a war leader towards the end, but sometimes I wasn’t sure if that was just part of the worlds’ general hatred of him. But, this doc objectively shows that he really hadn’t had what it took to lead Germany to victory.
More documentaries about this time period than any other I'm guessing.

Wonder how large a role Pervitin played in the french downfall
Judging by the looks on some of the faces on the troops, quite a bit. There has been a few documentaries that focus on the amphetamines the Germans used.
Very large role for sure… only reason they were able to get the tanks to France so quickly was because they had their men driving them day and night on pervitin
A Huge Role !

22:47 Standing beside Hitler is General, later Field Marshall, Paulus who surrendered at Stalingrad.
Please do a docu on the ”winter war” where USSR tried to invade Finland
I'm pretty sure they don't "do" documentaries, bur republish already produced one from the last 30 years or so, probably already shown on several national or private TV stations.

The oversimplication is easier for most I presume.
You missed the part where the nazis were all hopped up on meth. No ordinary soldier was able to stay up for three days.
Like rock stars, also very dangerous! Good comment, relevant to 2024!
The SS were using drugs, ordinary troops not as much.
Pervetin !

There were any rumor connected what is and how is polland after france
What makes this so magnetic to watch is that it seems unreal but it's real and not that long ago really. I was born 40 yrs after the war was over.

8th: Do not declare war on the United States then do everything to prevent an attack on the United States.
tldr
You are so smart.

At 2:17 Hitler telling his generals you think you know more than me.
Europa The Last Battle
Best documentary by far.
Great documentary but Hitler went after Stalingrad more for its name. You guys YOURSELF covered this in the SS Documentary you made.
Capturing the oil fields first was of essence.
Stalingrad was important because it was a large industrial centre and transport hub via the Volga river.
