Tony - Slick is a genuine person and someone were proud to know. No extras on him - just a solid family man who made a way out of no way. Let us know who you would like to see next.
I'm reading some of the comments and noticing some blatantly racist viewpoints. Slick is a fantastic example of how your social economic conditions, rather than your ethnicity, shape your reality. When I traveled to Los Angeles a few years ago to interview some of the guys from the Echo Park neighborhood, I met an African American gentleman who was from there, and much of his identification and demeanor were pretty aligned with that of the primarily Mexican neighborhood. Meeting an African American from LA who was a member of a Mexican gang and spoke in an urban Mexican vernacular was a full culture shock for me but also a realization that your ZIP code, not your race sometimes will determine who you are in America.
Bo, While I Agree That Environment (Family, Friends, Activities) Plays A Significant Role In Shaping One's Personality And Predilections, Undergirding These Environmental Factors Is A Genetic Predisposition (How One's Genes Predispose One To Think And Behave). So Although The African Is Of A Different Race Than His Gang Counterparts What They And All Other Gang Members Share In Common Are Genetically Determined Personality Traits That Incline Them To Prefer Gang Life, Gravitate Towards Gang Members, And Ultimately Join A Gang. Let Me Give You An Example. There Are Many Males That Come From More Favorable Socioeconomic Environments Than Slick (Middle Class, Upper Middle Class Backgrounds), But Join Gangs Nonetheless. Why? because Their Inherited Personality Traits Predispose Them To Associate With Other Anti-Social, Sociopathic Males.
