- In this video I am sharing, in-depth, my own techniques for targeting spring steelhead on Lake Superior tributaries. I sort of do things my own way and I have caught lots of steelhead using my own blend of gear, strategy and hard-earned knowledge of the fish and what actually catches them. I'm from Utah and I'm here working. I hit the brule last night and tonight and I caught 2 brooks is all. Which I'm stoked about because that is 2 more than I caught before. But I always preferred fast water in Utah because there aren't any other fisherman, but we don't have steelhead. Anyway I appreciate your tips 100% I need them!
I’ve caught plenty of steelhead in fast water too. They seem to prefer it at times.

Great video-thanks for sharing your knowledge. What size Gamakatsu Octopus hooks do you recommend for yarn eggs? Any preferred hook color?
I typically use a size 6 or 8. 6 in stained water, 8 in clear. I have used all sorts of hook colors but I prefer nickel. I think it blends into the background the best and I don't really want my hook to be a prominent part of my presentation.

They do work, although I haven’t tried them a ton on the brule. In my opinion they are best in the fall.
Yeah I've noticed they work well in the winter too. Yesterday in low clear water I was putting them right in there face and not interested. But the guy 100 yrds away with a fly rod was catching numerous big steelhead. You are so right about going small with eggs and insects 👍

Yes. With the cool weather coming and the rain we’ve had I’m sure there will be steelhead in the river. There should be cohos and browns as well.

What would be the best time of year to fish the Brule for steel head? I can request some time off work for next spring and would like to optimize my chances. Thanks
It’s always a gamble with rain and such but I would say the last two weeks of April would be your best bet for the most fish being in the river and a little warmer water.
What size hooks are you recommending for the nymphs and steamers?? Thanks
I have never checked to be honest. I don’t tie my own flies so I usually just grab what looks good. If I had to guess, most of the stoneflies are probably tied on 8s or 6s and the prince nymphs probably 8s 10s and 12s

Picked up the SST 86 with the carbon wrapped handle also the Sunline 8LB . Fished the Brule last Thursday and struck out . One angler we talked with managed a 23 incher on a fly rod. Pretty slow fishing . My question is with just the split shot are you feelin the shot on the bottom? Do you vary the size shot ? Was fishing floats but wanting to try the no float rig . Thanks the rod and line was spot on !
Nice! Yes, we were fishing it yesterday and pretty much struck out too. I he Brule is always a roll of the dice it seems. Some days you crush them, other days you can’t buy a fish! But yes, I’m just ticking the bottom with the split shot and keeping the rod tip high to keep if from hanging up. If you aren’t hanging up once in a while you are probably doing it wrong but you should also not have so much weight on that you hang ip constantly. And yes, I do vary my split shot size based on current speed and water depth.

Your system is so simple one split shot above the micro swivel and that's it ? Just vary the size of that one split shot ? Hoping to get back up and try again before season ends . Oh yeah, I set the hook on all kinds of snags. Hooksets are free! Every now and then it’s a fish. Lol. But yes, the system is pretty simple, sometimes if I have a small split shot on I will just add another small one to it rather than changing out to a larger one, but same concept.
First timer here , can you tell me what size split shot you are using ? Singles or multiple ? I have size 8,6, and 4 Gamakatsu Octopus hooks any time you would use 4,s on the Brule ? Is it to early to throw Cleos ? How about spinners ? Thanks Don
Hey Don! Glad to hear you are giving it a try. I don’t typically use hardware in the spring with the cold water temps and lots of over-wintering fish. I rarely use #4s for any trout. You just don’t need a big hook for them. As far as split shot I typically go with one and adjust the size as necessary but I sometimes use slinky weights in real heavy current as well.

You said you use a 24 inch leader. So do you put the float on the main line?
I very rarely float fish. I’m typically drifting and feeling for bites.

Are there artificial only sections people should be aware of? Those lake superior tribs always confuse me.
There are no artificial only regulations on the Wisconsin Lake Superior tributaries as far as I know.
Spawn eggs or yarn?
Depends on the day! I actually ended up hooking 2 nice fish on Saturday on stonefly nymph flies.
So yarn and snell knots and I'll catch a steelhead as long as I can drift proper? That's cheap tackle!
I have caught lots on that rig! There are still some steelhead in the Brule right now but they will be migrating back to the lake and will be pretty much out of there in a week or two as the water gets too warm.
@@calebwistad so is summer slow like on the brule? I mean as far as browns and brookies go. I will be out there every chance I get for the next 2 weeks anyway trying to get a lake runner! I've never had the chance before so I'm going to get at it. As I understand it's artificial flies and lures only right?
