- *IMPORTANT* After completing the transfer, re-link the old Nintendo Network ID(s) that previously existed on the target console, then go to the eshop and download all the games that were purchased with those IDs. Do the same thing in Wii mode. Visit the Wii shop channel and download all the games that originally existed on the target console. Happy gaming. :)

Quick reminder before transferring: All game save data on the "source" console/hard drive will be transferred successfully. All game save data on the "target" console/hard drive will be overwritten.

I will be purchasing a new Deluxe Wii U Set with Smash Bros. and Splatoon included in the bundle.
When transferring from my old Basic Wii U, will the games on the new target system be deleted? I plan to use the NNID linked with the source console, so would I even be able to redownload them?
(I just don't wanna lose games I just got. XD)
+HyperHunt621 You cannot use the same NNID on 2 consoles simultaneously. If you're worried about your pre-installed games being deleted, simply create a new NNID on the target console and then re-link it after the system transfer. That is just a cautionary measure though. Because your games come pre-installed you may not even have to associate them with an NNID. Ultimately you will be able to redownload your games from the eshop as a WORSE case scenario. It's just that if you want all your games associated with a single ID you'll have to call Nintendo and ask them if that is possible.

But back on topic, I want to transfer my NNID (that comes from the source system) to the target system, and I only want to use that NNID--not two simultaneously--on the target system.
And when it comes to the games stuff, I suppose I'll contact Nintendo for some clarification.

I have a question. When i do this process.. will it move EVERYTHING even to the smallest detail such as Fighter records in smash bros including DLC data and other data of newer game patches? A CARBON COPY or will only game data be transferred?
It will be a carbon copy basically. You will have to re-sync your controllers and reconfigure your Internet/tv/remote settings as these are the only things that won't transfer.

If I want to transfer data to a new console, but all my digital games are stored on an External HDD, will I still need to re-download all my existing digital games in the target console, or do they get automatically recognized on the existing external HDD once the transfer process completes? Hi Rafe Alfaro. That’s a good question. I believe the games on your HDD will be transferred, although I cannot be sure as I did not use that method of transfer myself. Thanks for watching.
I have a question, did you have to download the Wii Shop titles from the old Wii menu? Here in 2021, you cannot access the Wii Shop Channel.
I want to do this transfer, but I don't want to lose my old Wii VC Shop Channel purchases.
Hi Nocholas. If you go to the Wii shop channel, under “account activity” you can still download your old games. I just tested this with Super Metroid and it works in 2021. If I’m remembering correctly, I think Wii games were transferred through the sd card, but the shopping channel provides an extra layer of security in case you are worried.
Also, keep in mind you will lose access to demos that were previously downloaded on your system. It is also possible that certain obscure games cannot be transferred, but I never had this problem. All the big Nintendo games work and I was even able to download an obscure baseball game that worked too.
Question (that I cannot find an answer to): what happens to the source console? I have read that "the source console will be formatted," but does this mean that the source console gets a factory reset? On the source console, after the reset, does the system act like it is new, or not? Does the source console start asking you questions about time zones, etc., like it is brand new, or does it act like a used system that has had its memory wiped? THANKS
The source console gets factory reset so you will have to set everything up again like new. However, gamepads are somewhat independent in that they do not have a "master console". I remember pairing the source gamepad to my target console. I think the gamepad retains some basic memory because (if I remember correctly) I was still able to use it as a tv remote.

So you have to set up your new wii u too right? Like they both have to be on at the same time. Then when I put the sd card in my new wii u it will erase the temporary name I put in and replace it with all my old info?
The short answer to your questions is yes. Both systems have to be on at the same time. (see 0:31) Just to be clear, you don't need to create a Nintendo Network ID on your new Wii U system since your existing NNID(s) will be transferred, but you will need to do a few things first like pairing the gamepad to the new console and making sure it is online and updated before you can transfer anything. Any IDs you create on the new system will be temporarily deleted (un-linked) from that system (which you can re-link later) and replaced with the old ID from the source console. Hope that makes sense.

Is there any way to do a data transfer on a broken wii u? Mine has its cooling system completely messed up and a lot of wires probably chewed up by bugs. So if i use and turn it on the whole thing heats up super quickly and on the tv it shows an extremely glitchy and static image and a loud bussing sound.

I backed up everything on my source console to a usb storage device. Can I transfer everything to the other console using this complete transfer method and thennn plug my usb storage device back into the source console and move all my stuff back on it? That way I will have outsmarted the big N and can actually transfer game saves to other consoles. Thanks

Hi gia. You don't need 2 TVs. Only 1 television is required if you are setting up your console for the first time. After that, you can begin the system transfer process without a TV as it will take place entirely on your 2 gamepads. I had both my Wii Us connected to a single TV and was fully prepared to record footage in case something happened on screen. Unfortunately there was nothing on TV except a message telling me look at my gamepads.
Hello, I got a question. Let's imagine I have my WiiU A with A DLCs, and a WiiU B with B DLCs. How could I transfer both DLCs in one WiiU? Thank you!
The system transfer will not merge DLCs from two consoles (I wish it did) but it does give you a license to redownload anything that was erased during the system transfer. This is what will happen. Everything on your Wii U B will be deleted. In order to retrieved your lost games and DLCs, they will need to be redownloaded separately on the eshop with same NNID that was used to purchase those games/dlc. (at no cost). Hope that answers your question.
Hello could you tell me once you've moved some game content to another Wii U you will the content still stay on the previous one so it's like you have two copies?
Hi NeoN. Unfortunately all game data is tied to your Nintendo Network ID account which can only be linked to one console at a time.

@Scorched Ninja Hi, sorry for the late reply. Any money you have leftover on your account will be transferred when you perform a system transfer. Unfortunately you cannot log out of your account on 1 Wii U and then log back in on a different console. If it were that simple, this video would not exist.

I bought my Wii U basic set with some digital games installed. I think the previous owner bought it using his account, but I'm not sure about it. Is there a way to redownload those games in my new Wii U deluxe set without having access to the account who bought the games?
Unfortunately not. You have to enter the password for the Nintendo Network ID before the transfer process begins.

No problem. And yes, Wii mode games + save data will be transferred using the Wii U transfer tool. Additionally, Nintendo states that any funds leftover in Wii mode will also be transferred/merged to the Wii mode on your new system. A word of caution though, you may need to re-download certain titles in Wii mode (Nintendo's FAQ wasn't specific) and if those games aren't available on the Wii shopping channel at the time of transfer then you might lose them. So if you are worried about losing a specific game then check beforehand to see if it is available on the Wii shopping channel first. If you'd like a detailed list of Wii mode games I successfully transferred let me know.
Hey, I was wondering. If I have save data on the Target Wii U, but I put it all on a USB. Can I do the system Transfer then just plug the USB back in?
Unfortunately, no. Save data originally created on the target Wii U will no longer be available after the system transfer is completed, even if it is stored on a usb device. (Nintendo support)
So say I digitally purchased games on one wii u unit and it breaks, then I purchase a new wii u unit, will my digital purchases transfer from the old one to the new one or are they now singularly tied to the original console I purchased them on.
Hi Droid. Unfortunately, NNID accounts are directly tied to the systems they were originally created on, and the only way to transfer your games is to perform a system transfer between 2 functioning consoles. Meaning if your Wii U gets lost, stolen or breaks there’s no way to recover your games. In the past, you could send your broken Wii U directly to Nintendo and as long as you had the account name and password, your games could be restored. That would be the only way, however I doubt Nintendo still offers these services in 2023. It should be noted that if you have games on a hard drive or usb stick and that fails, you can still use the eshop to redownload those games. I hope you managed to download some good titles tonight before they closed the eshop.
@@justjoined crude, got my wii u back in 2014, just fizzed out earlier this week ironically, had a ton of games I got over the years some that had even been taken off the eshop before it closed. Would it be possible to login to a new wii u with my account and re-download them? I have them stored on an external hard drive and I merged my network ID and newly made Nintendo Account back in September on my phone.
@@APDT4 sorry to hear. No I don’t think it’s possible. If you try to login to a new Wii U with your current account, it will just say something to the effect that this NNID is tied to a different console. And if you plug your external hard drive with the games into a new Wii U, it will need to be reformatted before you can use it. You can try calling Nintendo’s toll free 1-800 number to see if they’ll help you recover those games. That would be the only thing I can think of.

I have one more question, if I have lets say Splatoon on my old and new Wii U, can I use my flash drive to play my old save data to the new save data.
The old save data would replace the new save data after performing a system transfer, so you would only lose the new save data.

+Vinson Games No the only way to transfer save files is through a system transfer. If it was a Wii game you could save your progress to an sd card and then put that card in your new machine. Nintendo doesn't allow that anymore. If you plugged your old usb into your new Wii U, it will ask you to reformat the drive in order to use it, so you wouldn't be able to access your old splatoon data.
My old system suddenly broke, without any reason, and I'm going to be buying a new one soon. Would I be able to put my NNID on the new system, and redownload all of my VC games, and Wii U ones?
Hi AdkalsAlive. Unfortunately your NNID cannot be associated with multiple consoles at the same time. Since your NNID is tied to a broken Wii U, you must call Nintendo's 1-800 number and ask them to transfer your NNID to a new system. Hope that helps. Good luck.

The available system memory in the ????. need to make at least ???. The broken screen is covering up almost the whole message and I have no clue what that says. Sammy Conarroe Hi Sammy, sorry for the late reply. Without an account there's no way to get the game back unfortunately. The craigslist seller must have had an email address associated with his account. Ask him to reset his password and then give you the new one. Best of luck.

I've made purchases with two separate Nintendo ids, with my target wiiu xx1 and with my source wiiu xx2, once data is transferred to the target wiiu xx2 will be on there but, will the Nintendo id xx1 remain on that target wiiu? If it were deleted can I log back in and redownload purchased games that were on my target wiiu? Not really worried about saved game data, just want my purchased games. Haha appreciate the help! :)
Good news: Your games can be downloaded again at no cost. Simply log back into the account that was used to purchase your games, then head over to the eshop to download them again. This is what I had to do for the Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. I lost my save data but it gave me an excuse to replay the game. 😃

Hi Bradley. Yes I believe so. Nintendo says we’ll be able to redownload games that have been purchased with our accounts, so I’m assuming this should still work even after the eshop closure.

Say you have an 8GB Wii U that you want to Transfer to a 32GB Wii U but the 8GB Wii U has a SD card loaded with Wii Ware & VC games so how do you proceed if you have to put a SD card in the transferring 8GB Wii U? Like you’ll have to remove the 8GB Wii U’s current SD card that has all the Wii VC & Wii Ware games and replace with another SD card that’s part of the transfer process. Guessing that Nintendo knows what Wii VC & Wii Ware games are on the transferring Wii U so you’ll have to re-download them on the target Wii U? Fingers crossed this works for me lol
Even though yes I haven’t transferred any data from my Wii U but I believe that all Wii and VC games will transfer as Wii menu data is transferred between the two systems although you will have to put the VC and Wiiware games onto the system memory in order to do this I think. Note it may not be the best explanation but I wanted to give you as much of a decent explanation on Wii Ware and VC.

Hello Kenny. All Nintendo IDs must be transferred to your new Wii U. There will be nothing left on your old console after the transfer.

Your data is tied to your console. So if you were to trade your console for a new one, you would need both consoles present and updated with an sd card to perform the transfer. It is a bit cumbersome but perhaps an arrangement can be made with the vendor to transfer your data in store or at home. Several months ago Gamestop had a 100$ trade in offer for 3ds XL owners who were upgrading to the new 3ds XL. Some locations even allowed customers to do a system transfer in the store. Most people payed up front for the new handheld, brought it home, transferred their data and then returned to GameStop with their old units and the receipt to claim their 100$ back. Unfortunately until Nintendo changes its policies that is what must be done.

Unfortunately no. All storage devices are formatted to work with a single Wii U. The only way to have data read by another console is through a system transfer. By the way how's it going? Did you manage to speak with Nintendo about your situation?
Yeah, they wasn't pretty clear. One said yes, and one said no and I can't find this problem on the internet anywhere. I think I may have to take a chance. I've read that console ban only locks the security number on that Wii U. I really need more info.
justjoined I tested the theory on my Console Banned 3DS, and transferred it to my other 3DS. It worked. At first, they will say you're console banned, but if you re load miiverse, you will get unbanned.

justjoined I'm getting a new WiiU in a few weeks and I was scared that if I transfer my Console banned console on the new console, I'll get console banned, so I tested this theory on both my 3DS's by transfering the console banned data to the new one. The old 3DS is still console banned, but the new one is fine, even after the system transfer which is great.

+Freezy Rejection All games and NNIDs on the source console must be transferred. Additionally, all game licences remain tied to the NNIDs they were purchased with. So if you have any games/NNID(s) on the target console, you must link those back to the target system after the transfer.

Hi GilbertAndBowser, I'm sorry to hear about your gamepad. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to perform a system transfer without a functioning gamepad because the transfer screen takes place on the gamepad(s) and not the television. At least this was the case when I performed my system transfer in 2014. You will have to call Nintendo (toll free) and ask them if they can grant you a license to transfer your content to another Wii U. This is the only way.

Hi Moe, sorry for the late reply. All games and save files on my target console were deleted by the transfer tool. Thankfully your games can be recovered by logging onto the eshop using the same NNID they were purchased with.
My Wii u doesn't turn back on but all of my games are from the eshop, is there a way that I can transfer all of it and my Nintendo ID account too?
You must call Nintendo's support line, only they can assist you. They will ask questions about your Wii U console and the NNID associated with it so keep that information handy and let them know of your intentions to transfer. If your Wii U console is still under warranty, make sure to bring that up too. Depending on the circumstances Nintendo may repair/replace your broken Wii U for free.
If i have a backup of my games saved in a hd, do i still need to download my games from eShop?
Hi Tiago. You don’t need to redownload games that are stored on a hard drive. You just plug the hard drive into the new console and all your games will be available.
@@justjoined one last question. The souce wiiu has to be turned on all transference (until the target wiiu ends the copy of data) or can be turned off when the sd card is written?

Yes it will spoil the process. Do not turn off the source console. If you go to 15:31 it says “Transfer of software and data complete. This console will now restart.” This is when the source console will power itself off. Notice the light on the white Wii u in the background turns red after this message. Both consoles need to be on for the full duration of the transfer.

I have two IDs on my Wii U. One is for Wii U games region PL, another is for Wii games region UK.
Will both of the IDs be transfered?
Will I see my saved game dataafter the transfer for Wii games? I am nearly finished with Skyward sword and I am wondering if the saved game will be moved to new wii u console.
Both of your IDs will be transferred as well as your Skyward Sword save data.
One more thing I forgot to mention. Skyward Sword's save data can be copied to an sd card, which can be used in any Wii or WiiU console.

And I'm banned, so would it ban that console too or would I be able to make a new NNID and still go on Miiverse?
+Marioman574 I honestly don't know but I would be surprised if there was a simple workaround to this problem. The best course of action would be to contact Nintendo directly to see if they can lift the ban.
+Marioman574 Just following up on my previous comment, there's a gentleman here in the comment section who successfully performed a 3ds transfer on his banned handheld. Based on that information it looks like you CAN transfer your data without affecting your new system.

What happened to the Wii mode's message board play time history? Did it keep the source Wii U's play time history messages, the target Wii U's play time history messages, or delete the play time history messages from both of the consoles?

Hi sn0wm4n. So I booted up my original source Wii that was used during this transfer process, and I can confirm that I played Twilight Princess on October 10th 2010 with the message “best game ever”. No such play history (or messages) exist on the Target Wii U in Wii mode, so none of that information was transferred. It appears to have been left behind on the original console. No such data exists on my target Wii U console’s Wii mode. Only games I’ve played after the transfer process appear there
Actually, bear with me because the answer is complicated. I performed 2 system transfers. First, I performed a regular Wii to Wii U system transfer around 2012. In that specific transfer, all of my playtime and messages were left behind on the original Wii system. However, I just noticed that I have playtime records from November 2012 on my Wind Waker Edition Wii U which was purchased a year later. Meaning that all my Wii play records and messages created on my source Wii U (2012 onwards) were indeed transferred to the target console during the “Wii U to Wii U” transfer.
@@justjoined So did you lose the play time data from the white Wii U's Wii Mode completely if it was created on the white Wii U after the system transfer from the original Wii? I think that the Wii U to Wii U system transfer factory resets the source Wii U after the transfer is complete, which I presume includes Wii data on that Wii U as well.
@@justjoined If you never used the Wii to Wii U system transfer channel on the Wind Waker Wii U, did that separate channel that says some information about the Wii to Wii U system transfer process stay on the Wind Waker Wii U's Wii menu after the Wii U to Wii U system transfer? @@-sn0wm4n-21 I don’t own the white Wii U anymore so I can’t say anything for certain, but I doubt I would have sold it with information still on it. I remember it being completely wiped. According to my Wii calendar I was playing Xenoblade Chronicles in November of 2012 in Wii mode on my white Wii U. Those play records exist today on my black Wii U even though I never played the game on that console. So I know all that Wii U data on the white console’s Wii mode was transferred. I’m assuming that everything was erased from the white Wii U.

The good thing is that its just a Splatoon *console* ban. But I cant play on my account after the transfer because the server will see my account XD

Probably not, it has to be the same account
Question: If I were to get console banned on my Wii U and transfer my data, will I be console banned on my new Wii U?
You'd have to speak with Nintendo about reversing the ban. As far as I know, a console ban restricts all online access, thus you wouldn't even be able to perform a system transfer.
