Big misstep not talking about the fact it's also 2 player co-op. The mechanic of being able to TP another player with Nightcrawler if they were close enough was a nice touch.
Growing up as an X-men fan I have a fondness for this game and visually it gets everything right. Every time I see this game, I automatically think of Jim Lee's run with Marvel; I still think his uncanny x-men art is his best work. A ton of characters both heroes and villains, the levels/locales were interesting - everything was well thought out. You pointed out the flaws;I think I had to rely on the full life cheat to beat the game and even then it was frustrating to play.
The reset stage eluded me for months until I raged and hit reset, thinking I broke the game. Once I got to last stage, I had to tell everyone in school Monday morning. Most frustrating/satisfying video game moment I had on the genesis
Same; can't say how long I was stuck, but I kept reaching that part time and time again. I'd get frustrated, the timer would run down, and I'd flip the switch to turn it off and leave it alone for a week. Must've done that 10 times before the random time I accidentally hit reset instead... I was excited, awed, relieved, and more frustrated all at once. I will never forget the design of that level.
Hahaha, Reset the computer now! I would say that is one of my favourite videogame moments, my brother and I had made it to that boss so many times and everytime we spent 30 seconds jumping around like idiots trying to hit every pixel on the screen, then one day I just said "why don't we hit the reset button?" so far outside the box it blew my mind
@@phetinthasanh7083 When you're at Mojo and the timer is counting down, you simply hit the reset button once. The screen goes black and a bunch of coding starts sliding... down? the screen and the next level loads up.
@Luke Paping I'm surprised you even thought the reset would be an option; that button normally is the "progress eraser", and that was the last place to think of for the rest of us.
Yes the sequel fixed a lot of the original games short comings. Both games are still fun but the 1st one is slightly more difficult but you know that’s why we love 16 bit era.
Tbh I think the resetting the game thing is genius. The first time I had to do it back in the day I was so nervous it was some sort of trick! It was and is talked about quite a lot as well and that's always a good thing for shifting games.
It did however come back to bite Sega in the Ass. They released basically a Portable Genesis called the Nomad that was basically a Genesis but portable. However on top of needing 6 AA Batteries, it had no way to soft reset (what is needed to Progress on The Crunch Stage) and could only Hard Reset, resetting back to the main menu fundamentally making the game impossible to beat on there.
I remember looking around for the computer they were telling me to reset, thinking it was in the game level. I did it a few times and ran out of time, ending the game. It became my "final level" where I would just play to it and search for this computer I was supposed to reset until time ran out. After accepting it as my final level I reached it and instead of looking around for the computer I just hit reset on my Sega. The realization was bittersweet.
It's mentioned that X-Men Mutant Apocalypse didn't come out until two years later as if that was the first time SNES had an X-Men game, but Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcades Revenge was there the year before this game came out on Genesis.
Your ABSOLUTELY right, I played it every year on my birthday with all.my friends at the local.midway fun centre God I wish I could buy that game.for any console
I owned a SNES & Mutant Apocalypse & played it constantly. My friend had Sega & this game which I always looked forward to playing at his house. Both great games.
Most of the x-men games have bittersweet memories. This game was hard, the sounds are irritating, and my reset button didn’t work on my Genesis essentially breaking the game. That said, i love the x-men and coming from the NES game this was such a huge step up
The only reason I ever beat this game, after years of getting stuck on the Mojo level, was b/c the Arizona Republic had a tiny videogame hints section. My dad showed it to me, and it had the "reset" tip. My mind was blown.
I got this game for Xmas. The first day of Xmas vaca I found it in my moms trunk. Ended up beating it by Xmas. So Xmas morning I wasn’t that excited and my mom was like “you really wanted that game, what’s wrong?”. I didn’t tell her the story for over 20 yrs lol. I still play thru this game once a year. Love it.
The review was nicely done! I agree with all of your criticisms about the game especially the level of difficulty. If you enjoyed this game, you should consider looking into or reviewing X-Men 2 for the SEGA Genesis.
this game was amazing in a lot of ways and way ahead of its time in terms of creativity. The biggest downside was the insanely brutal difficulty... but then again, I took that shit like a badge of honor. Made it super rewarding to actuallly make it to the end. Memorable soundtrack as well... and of course X2 clone wars was badass.
I had this game back in the day and loved it.saw it two days ago and got it again. We shall see if still is good. I liked it better than the others back in the day. Great video.
Aww yes I remember this game. My brothers got killed for months until we found out Night Crawler was OP. He was a playable cheat code because as long as you had the mutant power energy the teleport caused damage. Spamming it at the right time also prevents damage... even in 2 player if you are next to each other. We had all the teleport points down so we could breeze through most of the stages with ease.
The X-Men games were the reason I got my Mega Drive back in the day. I remember getting a Mega Drive with Sonic 2 and X-Men for my birthday in 1993, and in 1995 I got X-Men 2: Clone Wars for my birthday. That one ended up becoming one of the most played games of my childhood and a rare non-fighting game from the 16-bit era I was actually able to beat as a kid. The 16-bit generation really had a good success rate with X-Men games, which is pretty remarkable considering how rare it was to come across a licensed game worth playing. Out of all the proper X-Men games (that is any game with "X-Men" in the title), Spider-Man and the X-Men is by far the worst, and even that's pretty passable. X-Men for the Genesis was solid (not remarkable, but still good fun), and X-Men 2 and X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse are both brilliant games In a sea of terrible licensed title, the X-Men were a rare IP to not get any outright terrible games in the 16-bit generation, and they actually ended up with two of the more fondly remembered licensed games of the generation in X-Men 2: Clone Wars and Mutant Apocalypse. Then again, they had something to make up for after that dreadful NES game. :P (of course Wolverine's solo outing, Adamantium Rage, was downright terrible on the Genesis). It's such a shame X-Men 3 was canceled as it would have allowed you to play as Storm, Jean Grey, and my favorite X-Man of all Rogue.
This was the only game that I could recall that asked you to reset the game in order to progress. It was interesting to say the least, but frustrating at the time to be more accurate.
LOL. I remember that 'reset' part after defeating Mojo. I played that game several times and didn't know what to do and waited for like minutes for something to happen and pressed every damn button. I finally said "Screw this!!!" and pressed the reset button and finally passed that stupid stage.
Honesty... This is the most valuable element in this chanel... And in this dark ages of gaming journalism bullshit and boot licking, it pretty much gold powder.
Funny I didn't feel this game was that hard when I was a teenager, but when I got a new genesis a few years ago and got this game again, I got my ass handed to me, I did need the practice of my younger days.
I was playing the game at a friend's house when we reset the game totally by accident at the right moment after fighting Mojo. It felt like discovering pure gold.
I remember the moment I reset my Sega when I reached the part I couldn't get past and accidentally figured out the way to get past Mojo. It blew my mind.
I beat this game before the internet was really a thing and so it was outrageously anxiety provoking when you have to hit the reset button on the console after beating mojo. It was also unreal satisfying when I found out that was the correct decision lol.
i completed this on the mega drive and when mentioning which Xmen there was in the game you forgot to Mention Jean Gray Who Would Save You If You Fell Of The Screen
Huh I never knew the Genesis got an X-Men game at all. I grew up with the 90's cartoon show based off them, and this brought those memories back for me today. Also just as a suggestion especially since I see so little of it mentioned, but what do you think about the War of the Gems SNES game?
The game needs to be reset from the console at a certain point? That explains why the game was stuck when I was playing it at the store. I was playing it on one of those kiosks that you'd find at a department store, and the console is locked behind a glass case, so you can't press the reset button. I was trying every button on the controller and couldn't figure out what to do.
Great point about the presentation and use of color being important. Personally, if I were a fan of the X-Men and thought the gameplay was only average, I'd feel slighted that someone gave my heroes a half-assed game.
I also like this game, that’s why I had to give it a review as well. It’s good for X-Men fans, and as kid it scratched that itch that all us fans of the animated series had!
The secondary X-Men weren't all screen clear-alls. Storm hit all the enemies on the screen with moderate damage. Archangel did light damage on everyone 3 times, so you could clear more than a screen if you were moving through a bunch of easy enemies, but he didn't really work on hard ones. Rogue hit one enemy with a big, heavy-damage punch and was best saved for bosses. Ice Man just made a bridge so you could skip over some enemies or traps.
I was gonna say it was the other way around about the Vikings and Packers. Then I thought about it and your actually very right. Happy to say I'm not a Vikings fan, lol...
Nightcrawler was my best character here. I charge his teleportation and say "Kaio-ken!"...then enemies go down 😁😁😁. Also helped my teammate. Eventually I finished it so many times with Nightcrawler that I did a run using other characters too. 😂😂😁😁
I love this game agree with everything you said the gameplay isn't all that but I never seemed to care in the 90s because it was Xmen ,difficulty is high but i managed to beat as a kid, all in all good review
I have lots of memories of this game but to be honest, the difficulty and limitations on your abilities is ridiculous. It's not a terrible game but the difficulty REALLY sets it back. If it were the same game without x-men characters I suspect not many would've given a crap about it.
I remember struggling to get to the "reset" point, not knowing what to do, and my brother and I saying screw it and hitting reset thus stumbling upon the solution. It was a really cool surprise, but after 5 minutes the excitement wore off and we realized what stupid mechanic it was. All we had to do was get mad and hit the power button and we never would've known
@wurstbrotmitbutter it requires you to use the reset button after you beat Mojo or else you can't finish the game and the Nomad doesn't have a reset button.
I never thought this game was hard. But I never got past that weird reset thing. They have this floating thing that looks like a portal there to maybe hint to what your suppose to do but I never thought it looked like the genesis(if its even suppose to). That part broke it. But it's not that bad, inferior to the sequel by large but ok on its own and an improvement over just as large over arcade's revenge.
I remember at one time wanting to get into retro consoles, at least the main ones. I got a SNES and an N64 then by the time I was thinking about getting a Genesis I realized, I don't really like the Genesis that much. Other than Sonic, which I like but is only ok, I couldn't come up with any genesis exclusive games. And looking back, in my opinion, the SNES just looked, played, and sounded better. I know the genesis had a ton of good exclusives, but I couldn't really name any, not like i could with nintendo.I even owned a genesis for a short time when I was really young. I think I only owned Sonic 1 and Street Fighter 2.
Yes it's finally here, Sega Drunk. I thought the second X-men game was much better than the first though. Everything felt so nice and fast compared to the sluggishness of the first one. Still had some iffy sound effects though.
+Nofumasa Baba the sequel is faster, plays better, and maybe easier because of the improvements but I never really liked it for some reason. Maybe I wasn't interested in the characters or the sprites were larger so I think the levels felt smaller but the game felt very generic to me. Like a Capcom beat'em up but not as fun.
Yes, 2 is better. Also if you're capable of hitting C TWICE, JUMPING ISN'T AN ISSUE. The music is great in this game. I was 9 when it came out in 93' like you said, there is some biased loving the cards and cartoons at the same time.
I was a huge X-men fan in the 80s-90s but thought this game was licensed trash. It nails the look, but just about everything else was sub-par. And once "X-men: Mutant Apocalypse" was released there was really no contest.
I remeber being a SNES kid and going to my SEGA friends house to play this one....ohh my disappointment. I was truly only jealous of Mutant League Football. Man I loved that one.
for the longest time I didn't know I had to reset the game at Mojo's stage... so one day I hit the reset button and a bunch of X's and 0's filled the screen... also my cartridge would let me skip the first 3 levels if I just hit the start button rapidly while going into the level in the Danger room
So hard things in this game is to reset your Sega Genesis when they tell you reset the console. Nobody is going to do that since you played like 1 hour into it. Also Magneto is really hard because you have to figure out a way to beat him. That's it though. The rest of the game is pretty easy.
This game was huge when it first came out! It was the reason I bought a Genesis, it’s importance to the Genesis’ success cannot be understated
Same here! I saved for months and my parents saw a classified ad for a genesis with Streets of Rage 2 and this...it was nirvana.
Big misstep not talking about the fact it's also 2 player co-op.
The mechanic of being able to TP another player with Nightcrawler if they were close enough was a nice touch.

John N I've still not beaten this game. I'm gonna try again for a while.
It was a hard game, not a bad game. Like the first Turtles.

This game was alright, but the sequel to it was fantastic.
Clone wars was amazing

I agree
Sega!!
lol omg why did you have to remind me of that terrible pterodactyl sound effect??
I remember the box art was so enticing! I had to have it, any x-men game in the 90s was top priority. The jim lee x-men heyday.
Except for that awful Spider-Man vs xmen game on the genesis
Liking hard games or loving the xmen animated show are the main reasons to play this. But that intro is fire.
the best x men game was the konami arcade game.
Hands down. Id say the sega game is the second best. I loved that game

To this day I haven't beat this game
This game is still awesome but admittedly flawed but it is innovative in that reset bug trick also makes it memorable
Funny I didn't feel this game was that hard when I was a teenager, but when I got a new genesis a few years ago and got this game again, I got my ass handed to me, I did need the practice of my younger days.
Man it was hard. Can't get past magneto in that room when he flying around. It's like the 6 0r 7 stage
Are u from Minnesota? Cuz u had said its like the MN vikings and GB packers rival.

The beat part of your channel is your awareness and willingness to admit your own bias
I never once thought this game was hard as a kid
I always wished they'd done more with Gambit and Nightcrawler but it was what it was considering the technology at the time.
I still have this game and yes this game is hard af.
the face painter reference was on point
The music is way better in Mutant apocalypse
I beat this game before the internet was really a thing and so it was outrageously anxiety provoking when you have to hit the reset button on the console after beating mojo. It was also unreal satisfying when I found out that was the correct decision lol.
Hilarious how they put the stats at normal or athlete ect and Load Wolverine up with better stats, even higher intelligence then everyone

Save you and murder your HP at the same time lol especially by the last couple of levels.

Thank you for this video because I have this game and definitely love this X-Men title.
I've played threw this game countless times n now just found out the story...thank you SEGADRUNK
Snes fanboy for life! However thumbs up for Seinfeld reference.
The secondary X-Men weren't all screen clear-alls. Storm hit all the enemies on the screen with moderate damage. Archangel did light damage on everyone 3 times, so you could clear more than a screen if you were moving through a bunch of easy enemies, but he didn't really work on hard ones. I was a massive X Men fan and while I enjoyed the game, even as a kid I couldn't overlook it's flaws. Now Clone Wars on the other hand was awesome.
I was gonna say it was the other way around about the Vikings and Packers. Then I thought about it and your actually very right. Happy to say I'm not a Vikings fan, lol...
I loved this game growing up
This game was really hard but so worth it. I played this for endless hour as a kid.
This game made up the 16 bit decision for me.
Why did the game force you to reset at some point?
X-men on sega. I had snes at dads and sega at moms. But never really went over there. Then got n64 at moms and ps at dads lol. Crazy.
im a sega xmen, and age of empires fan, from back in the day. anyone else the same here?
I enjoy the game gear version of this title more. Both are good though. That being said X-men 2 clone wars was the best of them all in that era.
Nightcrawler was my best character here. I charge his teleportation and say "Kaio-ken!"...then enemies go down 😁😁😁. Also helped my teammate. Eventually I finished it so many times with Nightcrawler that I did a run using other characters too. 😂😂😁😁
This game has such an amazing soundtrack
When do you post new videos?

I love this game agree with everything you said the gameplay isn't all that but I never seemed to care in the 90s because it was Xmen ,difficulty is high but i managed to beat as a kid, all in all good review
It took me forever to figure out that reset part
I absolutely love this game and yeah it’s hard as hell to be put mildly!
Sometimes you have to crush your enemies where they live
I have lots of memories of this game but to be honest, the difficulty and limitations on your abilities is ridiculous. It's not a terrible game but the difficulty REALLY sets it back. If it were the same game without x-men characters I suspect not many would've given a crap about it.

Currently playing Prince Of Persia remake and now I need a X-men 97 side scroller from Ubisoft
X Men 2 Clone Wars? Why play this when the second is so much better?
The only game that is literally impossible to beat on the Nomad
@wurstbrotmitbutter it requires you to use the reset button after you beat Mojo or else you can't finish the game and the Nomad doesn't have a reset button.
I saved up and bought this game new when it came out. I was very disappointed. I think I was 9 and it was way too hard. Made it unplayable for me.
Same here. So excited and was such a hard game. It pissed me off it wasn't as great as I wished for. Major disappointment
A game you actually cannot beat on the Nomad because of the reset
It’s worth playing Togolese mutant ability button with cyclops and toggle between up and down. Looked like a cheesy dance
You have to have a plan for every single part in this game if you want to beat it.
i'm a Packers fan from Chicago
I wanted to play this game and Jurassic Park on Genesis.

SNES music for the game wouldve been lacking. Maximum Carnage is a good example
X men is still a good game. I just played it a few weeks ago and yes it's still really hard.lol
I had to save up to rent the Sega Genesis so I could play this game. Those were the days…
If i had a genesis id be playing it right now i still have my copy that i got the first week the game out
I remeber being a SNES kid and going to my SEGA friends house to play this one....ohh my disappointment.
Where this game lacks, X-men: Clone Wars makes up for with flying colors!
So hard things in this game is to reset your Sega Genesis when they tell you reset the console. Nobody is going to do that since you played like 1 hour into it. Also Magneto is really hard because you have to figure out a way to beat him. That's it though. The rest of the game is pretty easy.
This was far superior than the SNES’ outing
