I like the fact that its overall design is very reminiscent of its WWII & Vietnam ancestor,

The leather sheath edge need some burnishing using little water and burnish with a smooth stick or even your backside of the comb (see youtube how to burnish)

Uhh I dont know what you mean by "real". I never said it was a K-bar it. It is made by CASE not K-bar as I said in the video maybe you should watch it again. K-Bar is a BRAND name.

Case USMC knives are made by Ontario. It's a beautiful knife though. I love the 498, it comes ugly as sin but very solidly built and is current military issue. The Case knife looks like an unfinished 498. If you have sweaty hands, you are better off getting the 498 because of the antifungal treated stacked leather handle. I have a Kabar 1217 and I don't have sweaty hands but the stacked leather on it is starting to look like a turd. I tried many leather polishes and waterproofing sprays, and nothing seems to work and my Kabar looks like it's older than it really is but I've only had it for about 5 months. I wish Ontario would tell me what they use on their 498 handles because I need to apply that stuff to my Kabars handle to stiffen it up and prevent it from further deterioration but nobody knows what it's even called. The 498 has great preserved leather handles and would gladly buy another as a back up.

Not made by Ontario, mine says Bradford p.a. stamped on the metal, witch is the case factory, sorry buddy but your wrong, also the one I got on Amazon was made in 1992, and thats the same year ka bar had its replica of the ww2 knife, these are meant to be an exact copy of the original, the new ka bars are a bit off

Use neatsfoot oil on the sheath and handle.

I was active duty with 2nd Marine Division 2005-2009. "Current issue" is the Ontario OKC3S bayonet....or at least it was when I was in.
We still preferred the KaBar USMC knife. The coating it comes with is crap but strip it off anyway and then it's a great blade. I absolutely loathe knife coatings to begin with.
I used Ballistol oil both on the grip and sheath and my Kabar has seen hell and back and it's just fine. Leather grip darkened and sealed up just fine. Not sure what's up with yours...
I'm interested in the Case XX version just because I like the more old school USMC look. From what I can tell, though, and what I've heard, the Kabar USMC is slightly beefier and overall the nicer knife with a better edge to work with. Also, the clip point isn't as pronounced which I prefer over this Case version.
In addition, most Kabars have a very sharpish swedge but not fully sharpened. The Case has a fully sharpened swedge (like the OKC3S bayonet). This can be a problem in states like mine where a fully sharpened swedge is considered a "dagger" and not legally allowed to be carried on your person in public...🙄
Ontario makes the OKC3S which was definitely a more bombproof "kabar" but ended up being heavier and more awkward because it was a bayonet. No matter what I did to the OKC3s edge I could never get it proper sharp and the heat treatment appeared to be inconsistent throughout the same blade (some parts of the edge were diamond level hard. Would eat up diamond sharpeners like crazy. Other parts of the edge were very soft and wouldn't maintain an edge). Wasn't a fan and neither was many other Marines I knew. It was just an annoying brick hanging off your gear or plate carriers. Brute of a knife but with everything else you had to carry the lighter Kabar (or whatever other knife choice) was preferred.
I actually do like the OKC3S handle though. It was a nice grip for us shorter guys with medium sized hands. If Kabar made the same style and sized grip version I'd be all over that.
The Kabar versions have a flatter/lower profile sheath whether leather or plastic which is a big deal. (Compared to the OKC3S sheath which was this brittle plastic, massively shaped monstrosity of a sheath that was very annoying)
Kabar has a much more consistent heat treatment and factory edge over Ontario and that's just facts....unfortunately. I do like many Ontario knife designs but their QC is terrible even today. Hit or miss.
I trust the Case XX version of this knife has good steel though.

@@ohyeahyeah8054 Stamped at the Ontario factory just for Case. Compare the Case combat with the Ontario 498. Same thing just different colors

Very nice knife, i am just about to buy something like that. The Camillus USMC or its italian copy (black blade) which is also very well made, but costs the half.

i got one from the outlet store in Branson, MO. I've noticed the sheath has 2 flaws: 1. one of the rivets at the insertion point sits partially above the leather and could cause some (minimal) wear on the hilt. 2- The USMC stamp is half as deep as normal, not an issue but it makes me wonder. My question is, do the outlet stores sell 2nd rate products? Should I be wary of the knife quality? I plan on using the knife and do not want it to break and cause injury.

Usually outlets sell QC rejects. Mostly they are rejects due to aesthetic reasons and should not effect durability or effectiveness.
