I was kind of surprised about scalping in spring. Considering its such a no, no. How much scalp we talking? My HOC is 3ish, is spring a good opportunity to lower that HOC before summer? I know ideal is 2”.
I usually cut my zoysia on 3 and it appears to actually be 2 1/2 tall. I actually checked today to see how much thatch there was and it appears no more than a 1/2 inches and in some places it looked even less than that.
I have Meyer's Zoysia and I also cut on 3 inches bc I like the look. I have done this the last 8yrs without scalping and have not had any problems with thatch or brown out. This yr I shall be cutting the Zoysia every 4 days. I live just North of Birmingham, Alabama.
I was using an electric and had to switch when mine got thick. Even now with a powerful gas mower I can only manage to get down to about 2.5 inches. After I scalp it, I'm going to raise the cut height to 2 7/8 inches. Guess that's why they say to use a reel mower.
I’m here searching about Zoysia that is so thick I can barely walk on it. It’s worse than trying to walk on sand. My hubby said he won’t be able to push the mower that low but I assume you only do this in the spring before it gets tall. Oh ~ and I have Japanese Clover in mine and I’m sick. Too hot to spray for it or the chemicals will kill my grass. Sometimes I just want a weed yard instead of a lush lawn. 😂

I keep on hearing scalping but how much do Iremove? Is it to the dirt?
My zoysia is too thick and if i set my mower to the lowest it will not run as it is too thick

It means to cut the grass as low as possible. Sometimes even to the dirt.
