    I've had candidates ask questions that they thought there were "supposed" to ask. It's usually pretty obvious and it seems worse than asking no question at all. I completely agree that you should only ask questions that you're comfortable with asking.

    • @petelee2477

      How is it worse? Don't most employers immediately eliminate a candidate who didn't ask a question regardless of how they performed?

      Tyler Werner Retail group interviews I remember when I was in my early 20s some of them have one or two people I wanted to just kill. I now think I’m glad I didn’t get the job. Retail seems like you have to be intimidated to ask questions. Now I don’t have time to waste and just ask. The hiring person was liking that we were verbal fighting.

    • @damianasmith7001
      @damianasmith7001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a great question because like he said it gives them a chance to prove if the place is worth your time secondly research don’t prove anything because some people don’t care about competitors so in their mind they may not have a competitor. For example I run my own retail business and if I was hiring somebody and they tried to make him self sound smart by talking about another small business in the back of my mind I really it don’t make them sound any more interesting because I know what I need for (my business ) and I really couldn’t care less what another business is doing. So for me because he resents the history of the company and what other businesses are doing really isn’t going to make any difference to me all I want to know is can you perform the duties of the job point blank

    • @Gvoudzon
      @Gvoudzon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is why Don says in the video to, "...ask the question only if it feels right to you and not because some guy in a video told you to ask that question."

    • @jodorgu8640
      @jodorgu8640 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually it isn't so stupid. There is a difference in perception at times. Just because I believe Company X is a competitor doesn't mean that the company I'm interviewing with believes it to be so. They might actually view Company Z or G as a more direct competitor while these companies aren't even on my (external non-player) radar.

    I like it and asked two of the questions from here and got a managerial role, as well as, the pre-knowledge of what was going on at the job; which I conveniently encountered the very situation from an employee on the first day at the job, I felt an internal smile when it came up and was 100% prepared - it felt like crushing a popcan underheel.

    Mr. Don Georgevich...U R 1 of the most refreshingly in4mative personalities I have seen & heard in a L O N G time! Ur common sense knowledge (or should I write, "UNcommon?") and tongue in cheek humor is extremely valuable, rite on, and timeless; your delivery is lively & candid with just the correct dash of upbeat comedy. U really come across with a solid combination punch of hands on wisdom and sit down comedy. I look at it this way, if we cannot have fun during an interview, forget about it.

    The importance of questions to ask has always made me wonder about how to go about it, what to and what not to, Don's guide helps is helpful. I have seen two of Don's videos so far and what I find most helpful from his videos versus other videos is his explanation with examples. It is good to know how to answer/get the thought process started with a given answer than to just know what to do or what not to.

  • @davidbrewer7937

    I recently interviewed for a job which was not too well paid but the job was not difficult for me. My resume has a long history of good titles & high profile projects...I can't hide or downplay these facts, but nevertheless, it was really local & a very nice place to work, with flexible working & a very friendly, low key atmosphere. Because of this I was OK to take a fair pay & responsibility cut in exchange for a happy, workplace where it would not be difficult to shine bright while not even having to put my coffee down. It was especially attractive considering the very short commute that made up for a chunk of the lower net pay after travel costs. The 1st interview went well, it was obvious I could do the job easily, everyone was smiling & they had already let the "low pay cat" out of the bag early. Then the any questions moment came up & I asked about future progression maybe into design or R&D if the right role came along one day, the idea being to grab a better opportunity to improve pay & responsibility if & when it arose, using my extensive knowledge of the products from within. The HR lady looked at the department manager who looked at the general manager, then back & there was this awkward 15 second of silence with the three sets of eyes darting around in the headlights. The answer was finally fumbled by the HR lady who said that this does not happen & there was nothing on the long term radar for this sort of move. We all chatted another 10 minutes or so, bid our thanks with handshakes & smiles. When I got home I emailed to thank for the interview etc, & said I was keen to continue to the 2nd interview. I got an email back saying they would be in touch by the end of the week with the "next stage"....so I thought OK sounds good. Long story cut short I waited a week then another day & the HR lady called me to say they had decided not to proceed further...I was gutted! I could do this job with bells on, I had already decided I was very willing to give this job more than a good shot even though the pay was not great in return for being content & the fact that there was no natural progression did not really matter. What sort of world is it that I can blow something by wanting to progress & be more valuable to a company?...

I know it is “real” however, I don’t want to dwell on the negative. My biggest concern is when you’ve been unemployed for several months. I'm kind of scared to ask a question that I may be expected to know the answer to. Like... What are the top programming languages and software that you guys use daily? What if they expect me to have done the research already? What if it's the second interview and I should have already asked these questions in the first interview?

  • @marksmith4892

    Hi Don. It's my intention to rephrase each one of these questions for if I am unable to satisfactorily articulate the question in the context of my own job interview, then I will know it's not an appropriate question for me to ask. Perhaps this might be an effective exercise for others watching this video as well.

    I would have thought that a top company’s first issue with someone asking the competitors questions is that, really, you should already know. Almost anyone who is aware of Apple, google etc. could answer that question. “We’re at the top, where are you” sounds like they’re taking it personally or are easily offended.

    I just want to say Amazon has competitors ie. ( Best Buy, wal mart, target, frys,) etc. The question was who are your top competitors? not who is bigger and better then you. And if they can’t understand that question then I doubt that’s anywhere you should want to be. So I don’t see it as a bad question at all

    Don, generally how many questions is enough to ask? 2-3?

    • @Ha76532
      @Ha76532 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think you need to get a feel for the interviewer. I would say 2-3 is fine, but if your having a good conversation, continue it. The more face time you have with someone, the more memorable you will be. Make sure you ask smart questions and not just ones to fill time.

    #3 is NOT a good question to ask...
    I know because I asked it at my last interview...
    The woman refused to answer it and said it was too personal.
    Lets just say I didn’t get the job..

    • @gotmylk
      @gotmylk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The question is perfectly acceptable to ask. The person that tool offense to it was not acting in an acceptable way. I've been asked that question countless times by applicants and I'm happy to answer.

      So your reanswer could be to laugh sympathetically and say: yeah, I just wanted to try...
      Or something, making sure none is embarrassed.

      Probably not a place you want to work at anyway. I almost always ask this question and it's never been received poorly. It's one of my favorite questions to ask (immediately followed by "what do you like least about working here?"). Those questions I like to save for peer interview. Managers tend to give more fluffy answers. You'd be amazed how frank the peers will be.

    Hi Don, now a days lot of people are having financial problems so they really dont want to focus on these questions but are really desperate to just get a job and a salary etc...what do we say to such kind of people who are not looking to ask anything at all from a company at the interview but just going there for the hope of getting a job, a monthly salary and solving their personal encumbrances? Bcos i know a lot of people who are desperate to get jobs for salary even if the job sucks.

    Hello. I recently found your channel and have been enjoying the videos. Thank you. I am at the last round of interviews for a job I really want. Local candidates will have the chance of a face-to-face. I'll have to use video call. The hiring team will be on that interview. Do you have suggestions for me that might help compensate for my "non face-to-face" opportunity. I feel a bit in disadvantage at the moment. Thanks in advance.
