I loved how quickly Thomas went from excited for him to throw the fuse, only to be disappointed that he turned it over so badly. That disc is so money thrown smooth.

I LOVE this video content! I can’t begin to tell you how much this brutally honest venture into disc golf for a beginner is what happens to most beginners but too many manufacturers push what the pros use and it turns people off to disc golf. Thank you Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, and Westside Discs for helping new players choose the right disc. I highly recommend the Maverick, Diamond, Maul, Witness, or Underworld for beginners. I think the new Vandal is a great step up from there once you can throw nose down flat. Personally I think learning to throw midranges straight and starting with the Gatekeeper, Fuse, Truth, or Claymore is a great start. I’ve already converted a few new players from throwing drivers to the Gatekeeper at my local shorter course by being deadly accurate with the Gatekeeper and being able to throw just about every shot needed with just that one mold on different angles or a different plastic. The Pure, Marshal, Deputy, Maiden, Judge, and Crown all make good throwing putters to learn with as well. The deputy requires a lot more finesse but it also doubles as a GREAT putter for beginners to pros who spin putt. As for putters it’s all about feel and style so pick what feels comfortable first. If your a spin putter Deputy, Pure, Maiden, Judge, Keystone, or a Warden. If you push putt a Warden, Guard, Macana, Keystone, or a Dagger. If you have no idea what you do start with a Keystone or a Warden and branch out from there. I LOVE the way Latitude 64, Dynamic Discs, and Westside Discs approaches marketing and growing the sport.

Yup, well said. I was suckered into buying high speed distance drivers when I first started. Ok I wasn't literally suckered......I didn't know any better and my lack of disc golf knowledge had me assuming the higher the speed rating, the faster it would fly out of my hand. Now that I have the knowledge to know better, I went from throwing discs like the Destroyer and Boss to something more manageable like a Leopard 3 on most holes, and if it's super long I throw a Valkyrie which is like an 8 or 9 speed. Definitely much, much, much easier for me to control a Valkyrie and I'm honestly not losing much distance.

My favorite is the River in the opto plastic. I can grip it and rip it. Flights are very consistent. If you rip on it with a straight release it will fly straight for days because of its glide. Great beginner friendly disc. Go get one! You can thank me later.

River is 10/10 my favorite disc in my bag! Followed by the TL3 by Innova which is just a less glidey version for shorter holes. I've only been playing for roughly 4 months and will be pausing for the winter. Last week i played a round and on the few holes that were long enough for me to throw the River (300 ft plus) i hit the pin on the first (315 ft.) and on the second (389 ft.) i landed within 10 ft of the hole. Both were extremely low, flat, straight releases. It is very form centered though. You definitely need to be focused on how you release it. Let her rip flat, she will carry to the right and reliably fade back left right towards the end. I've been watching several reviews of the River today and have been truly disappointed by how people rate it... until this video. It's been a year since you made this comment. Do you still bag it? Is it still your favorite? I'm interested to see.

Jonathan, this would be an interesting video concept to revisit now that you've surpassed the one-year mark on your disc golf journey. Personally, I'm still classified under "newb" status as I've only been throwing for a couple months, but already I've seen my bag change quite a bit. I started out similar to you (and I think common to most folks starting out) with being all about the drivers, then, once I realized I can't throw for (expletive deleted) and fell down a lot more TH-cam rabbit holes, I started gravitating towards putters and slow-flying mid-ranges. Anyway, all this to say, it would be cool to see how your disc tastes have changed now that you're a seasoned veteran of the game. Keep up the great work!

I am 50, started 9 months ago at 49 and of all the discs I have tried: my favorite (and the only company I have in my bag) is Latitude 64.
    In my bag:
    Pure
    Fuse
    Compass
    Maul
    River
    Explorer
    Saint Pro
    Jade
    Saint
    Musket
    Sapphire
Perfect set up for me with my lower arm speed and making sure I don't do damage to my joints. I have most from Maul to Saint in Opto Air plastic!!

paulking0512 thank you very much for that list. I started 2 months ago and just got the Maul and it has changed my game dramatically. Love it! I suffer from that newbie-itis where a lot of shots go way too far left and after using the under stable Maul I’ve been semi cured. I also like the gummy feel of the opto plastic better than all of my Innova starter discs. Now I’m thinking of adding the Fuse as my midrange and possibly the Pure or Keystone as a putter. Also looking at the Ruby. Just curious on whether you have tried any other Lat 64 putters. I’m close to 50 with slower arm speed as well as being a smaller guy but I’ve picked up the sport pretty well and play maybe 36 or more holes a week. Any tips on the weights you are using also would be greatly appreciated. 🥏

First of all, this was a great video to get a beginner's perspective on many of the discs offered by y'all. So, this is coming from a beginner's perspective myself. I recently got a Sapphire (in Gold plastic if you're wondering), and I can safely say that is my main driver right now. I use the Stag from Westside for shorter drives, but for every other drive I use my trusty Sapphire. I love how it flips up to flat and then just gliidddeeessss. Very good disc, feels great, and quite durable. It was the disc that I learned how to do a good backhand on as I was doing forehand before. My only issue is that the stamp was very poor quality (not the image itself, but the ink used for printing). I haven't been throwing it that long and the stamp is almost already completely worn off. All in all, I love the disc and keep up the good work Latitude 64! I will definitely consider discs from y'all if I ever want/need something different.

Hey. Thank you for your feedback. I´m glad you like the video. I´m sorry to hear about the stamp. Having the graphics stay where it should is definetly one thing we work hard on. Mother nature with her whethering doesn´t like stamps it seems 😂. I´m thinking about doing the same sort of video in a year or so just to get a different perspective. I am newbie and so far my go-to are the Retro Burst Fuse and Retro Burst Pure. They came together with a Saint as an Advanced Set. I have a lot of control with them and because i have long fingers, I get a good grip on them. They are a bit heavy and stiff, so perfect for me on windy sections. I can’t find them on the company website so I bought another box set as back up. -at least until my speed increases and I’m better able to shape my shots.

For Mr. Ink, I would recommend nothing faster or more stable than the Jade for driver, River for fairway, Fuse for mid, and (don't know Lat 64 putters very well) something real straight with some glide for putter. That is all anyone starting out needs. Good luck, Mr. Ink.

One day he will watch this and laugh so hard. It’s hard to remember when throwing felt like such a uncoordinated motion. We all start there but now throwing is like walking.
Can’t wait to see some improvement, need a coach and some serious hours working on your form. Spend the time getting it right in the beginning, it’s a pain in the ass but way easier than trying to unlearn bad habits. Trust me as soon as you start throwing decent, you’ll want to throw further and that will never happen without a good form. Happy throwing!

I love my River in opto plastic, purple translucent . I also love my Saint, in a red/pink Gold Line Burst. I have a Saint Pro in Gold line that has not made my bag. I love the Saint, it has just the right stabilty to get the job done, very consistent for me, and i can throw with pop for a guy over 50. The River is just a hoot if I can throw for fun. For me it sprays a bit. I guess it is such a glider that it finishes kinda where I want if you throw it flat. Give it a bit of Hyzer and you know better where it is going to land. But I play disc golf for fun, and the River is just fun, it goes far for a speed 7, and throwing it flat and watching it get some air bounces is magic. I got the Fury and the Pearl, neither has made my bag, but they both throw nice, Fury is a bit flippy for me. One of my next purchases I think I am going to give the Fuse or the Explorer a try. JohnE and Emerson both can't be wrong. I throw an anything/everything bag. My slow stuff is Discraft, my mid range stuff is Buzz, River, Saint and TeeBird, Speed 9 is a mixed bag of stuff Infinity, Innova Discraft. Trying to find which forehand I like better Scepter or Firebird. I dont throw much over a ten speed. Vulture I do toss a Thrasher and and a Zeus, more like flick a Zeus for fun. But keeping at ten speed or so works for me best. If anyone read this long mess, please add a Latitude 64 product you think could compete with a Firebird or a Scepter. I cant make up my mind yet, I like both, so give me another option...

I have tried probably 90% of Latitude's molds in the last 10+ years and currently own maybe 20 different Latitude molds. Wasn't difficult to guess what was his favorite. Before watching the video I thought it would selection between Maul, Fury and Diamond. Ideally for beginner I would recommend probably Fuse or Pure. Horrible form (especially height) though and didn't tell much about the discs. This was what subject said, beginner's test. Most disc reviews are done by pros and are not useful for 90-95% of the players.
I've had Pure as throwing putter probably since 2006 and always Grip Line Pure and with recommendation probably indirectly sold quite a lot of those. Recommend it to everyone. Still have few "old" Jesper Lundmark Pures.
First throw with River looked really strange. It's not an understable disc.
Never understood why my Saints have been more stable than any of my Saint Pros, even the older flat Gold Line Saints.
My favorite Latitude discs are Pure (of course) and Claymore. Diamond sometimes in the bag as extremely understable utility disc for quick turn rollers and uphill shots.
Maul and Fury I use mainly in teaching purposes. Beginners can try a driver and good discs in showing different throws, because you can show rollers, annies, hyzer flips, hyzers and all kinds of throws with one disc.
Almost forgot. Sapphire is a great new addition. It is more overstable than I thought when it was published and more stable than most people think it is. Very good quite straight disc with finish to the left for 80-100 m/290-330 ft throwers, or up to 110/350.

Found a river (unmarked) in the woods one day. I had been throwing plastic from the 90's up to that point. The river was the first disc I'd ever thrown to hyzer flip and it would glide forever! I immediately got another in Gold Ice, and its become a staple. That yellow is hard to miss as well. I've since stepped into a few other types and am getting more stable in my bag. However, the River is just EZ distance and it marked the rebirth of my disc golf journey...

I got a red River (175g) with the same dragon stamp (in gold) in my mystery box this summer, and instantly fell in love. It's great for a flex line and a hyzer flip and has a very soft fade and lands flat. I love the feel and it's been a very predictable and controllable disc for me.

I wish they had a place you can go and try discs out no consequence. try before you buy type thing. I am not new to the sport (I am also not super good IMO) but I recommend slower speed discs to start. top of your range should be a 7. they actually say to only throw putters until your form is clean enough to get a putter 300 feet. I don't rely love this advice but I think it is a good way to tell where you are at with your form.

I love the Bolt works great for my throwing style. Unfortunately seem to be getting harder to find and I lost 2 at a tournament in Cheyenne Wyoming this past weekend. Most drivers are just a bit to overstable for me. The Saint Pro and Opto x Saint Pro are my go to fairway just the perfect fit. Not sure why as they are on the overstable side. And for putting a Classic Soft Judge hits the basket right for me. Thanks for sharing. Good luck in filling your bag with what works best for you.

Right now In my bag, I have 3 Ballista Pro’s, 2 in Opto plastic. One in Gold. And 3 Gladiators 2 in Gold Plastic, one in Opto.
Hands down! Favorites. (Gold gladiator #1)
Best forehand disc I’ve played with. I can get it out 300 + with a high amount of control.
I don’t have the biggest arm.
But I am very impressed with L64 and Dynamic Discs. I also have a Raider in Fusion plastic.
NO JOKE! After not playing a single round or anything for 7 years. I bought a Raider this past summer, took it to my local course.
Very first attempt with it on that hole, ACE.
So of course I’m re-hooked on the sport.

Great to hear! Pioneer wouldn't be our first pick as a beginner disc. It's very overstable and in need of a decent amount of power to really fly. I would say that a River or a Maul would be better if you are looking for a beginner/amateur friendly fairway driver. / Johannes

  • @dustinroberson1865

I've always been one to try to use the longest driver possible to get the most distance. It wasn't until recently that I realized that the extra speed doesn't do much for you if you don't have the arm strength and speed. I throw an average long distance driver just as far as I do the longest range drivers (within a few feet). The big difference, is that with say a 9 or 10 speed with high glide, I can have a very smooth release and get the distance versus throwing the disc as hard as I can and having inconsistent release points.
That being said, I'm still a sucker for getting as many discs as I can to try. I think I've amassed about 60 or 70 this year.
Good video for other beginners to see that it isn't always about the disc that you can throw the furthest. I'd like to see him go out with a few select mid range or fairway drivers that suit him and compare them to long range drivers. Actually give the numbers and show that a beginner doesn't need the highest speed discs because they aren't going to help them unless they have that arm speed and proper form.

@@Latitude64 I just started using Trilogy discs this year. Up until this point I was a big Buzzz and Star Beast user. The buzz was my go to for holes that I needed a straight line, and the beast was the go to for longer holes that I wanted a fairly effortless flipup with a small hyzer finish.
I've bought quite a few trilogy discs to test out this summer. I really like the Emac Truth and Verdict. I also have an Opto Fury in my bag, I've been using a dyemax maiden for my driving putter. The courses near me aren't the best for testing out new distance drivers.
Some of the discs that I haven't had a chance to test out yet are the Compass, King, Underworld, Suspect, Ballista Pro, Trespass, Harp, Slammer, Macana, Dagger, Criminal, and Sheriff. Probably missing a few.
Was big into disc golf years ago, and it seemed like the only discs in the area (Michigan) were innova and discraft.
