    I've only just found your channel and have to say that I absolutely love your style. I wanted to thank you for showing how you keep your fussy cut birds etc inside a little book. That's brilliant and I'm going to adopt it. Many thanks for the wonderful video showing your processes.

      Hello and welcome, Lisa. Thank you for touching base - this is all truly nice to hear. Altering books is my first creative love and I keep learning and learning even after all these years. I hope you will join me as we compare notes and make more and more. 🌻🌼🌷Kelly

    I love watching how you choose what to add to your pages! I learn a lot from hearing why you choose certain images and not others! This is a beautiful spread! I like the additional pastels that you have added! It really brings everything all together! Thanks for sharing!

      Thank you, Susan. It took me awhile to realise that so many people are looking for direction in laying out collage and hope that there is a little bit of insight here that can be used in their own projects.

    You are so soothing to listen. I learn a lot from the way you talk thro your plan for each page. It adds to the mystery and mystique of each collage.

      Hi Kristie, thank you so much for saying that! But it makes me smile when people say I am soothing: I always feel that my voice sounds like Marcia Brady when I wish it was more Marlene Dietrich.😊

    It is always a treat to watch, and listen to your stories. How the images relate to one another and the story, the relationships as they evolve. To see your brilliant, creative brain produce harmony with the images and background is such a treat.
    I am starting my first art journal using anything i can find on pre- and past naissance with elements of later artists eg some of Goyas work, Henri Toulouse-Lautrac and a couple of elements using my other supplies.
    Gosh I sound pompous! 😂
    Sorry folks!
    I'm actually talking myself up for the courge to start.
    Anyhoo I love what you do and your narrative ❤

      Tracey, not pompous in any way! I was just thinking that you could look for old coffee table books or even look for art magazines on Ebay (you can sometimes find those cheap!). As for getting up the courage to being, maybe this will help, a recent video about giving ourselves permission to create. Keep me posted on how it turns out! Kelly

    I have been watching your videos and a few other creators over the past week and a half. I enjoy yours and Cari Griffith the most. You however teach something VERY special. I used to scrapbook early 2000's but because I did it in such a way that did closely resemble a mix of what people are now are doing as art journals or glue books (neither I even knew existed till now 🙂) I only kept up doing for about 6-7 years. I am so excited to be learning about the things you teach as well as how to use and incorporate things like texture pastes and alcohol inks and gouche paints. I often craft things to gift other people and over think the "pretty factor". I need to make just for me now and enjoy the freedom of learning and the process AND the " just see what happens".

      Hello and welcome, Cynthia! I really understand that reluctance to jump and get started. Have you seen my video on altered book basics? If you are still a little afraid, try starting in a cheap book that you aren't too invested in. Book altering is tricky (but so satisfying) and in the end, no matter what I teach, the best way to find your style is to just get making and be willing to make and learn from your mistakes. Then you can move on to a better book with more confidence. Please let me know if you have any questions. Kelly

    I like how you tested the images to see what worked on the page. I really liked so many of these images and combinations. I think you need a bigger book!! I love the final piece. Wonderful tips in this video, thank you for sharing your thought process.

      Hi, Dawn, thank you so much. the problem with a bigger book is that one like this, with only five layouts, is already on the pricy side and (ergh) I do not yet have the following to go THAT much bigger and hope to sell a piece. But I like that feedback! Please check me out on IG @book.and.paper.arts to see more.

    First I love your final layout with the horizontal white trumpet lily. Second, a question. You spritzed water on top of the stencil, then added the chalk….is the water to liquify the chalk, to make it “pastey” or is it to soften the paper. Have you ever tried that, misting the paper first ? I like the idea of mark making 🤗🤗

  • @kimberlyrose144
    @kimberlyrose144 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Beautiful! I enjoyed listening to your process while I ripped and cut out images to add to my collection!
    Question: does the charcoal pencil or pastel colours/smudges blur onto the opposite page when you close the book/weigh the book down later on? If so, how to prevent? I was thinking of layering wax paper between pages but that sounds too… loose leaf for me.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello and welcome, Kimberly. In old books with vintage engravings that is exactly what they did, put very thin paper between pages so the ink wouldn't transfer. Sometimes these were tipped in (glued into the binding) so you could think of that. Now, if you are using gesso to activate charcoal/water solubles, then it is fixed. If you are using charcoal to smudge and outline and make the images pop without activating with liquid, if you smudge A LOT then it is mostly fixed and I tend to leave it. But you can also give it a light spray - if I make a piece for myself I actually use hairspray! If I make a piece to sell I use proper art fixative, and you can find this in any craft or art store - basically a cleaner, archival quality of hairspray. Does this make sense? Kellyl

    Hi Kelly, I’m wondering, with the pastel, do you have to put a finishing agent on the page to set it so it doesn’t smear?

    I do a lot of pencil and colored pencil art. What can I use to seal the art so it doesn’t rub off before I add it to my journals? Thank you

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya. Here's the deal. When I make a piece that is only for me and not to sell, I actually use a thin coat of hair spray, which is a lacquer. It is hardly archival quality but it will last longer than I do. 😉 If I am making a piece to sell, I use proper fixative. That is what it is called and you can get it in the art supply or craft store. Spray fixative. Hope this helps! Kelly

      Well, well, that certainly proves that the finished collage is wide open to interpretation! And sometimes we are up so close to a piece we don't see what others see. 🎨🎨
