- Elaine Chao previously worked in Trump’s cabinet but resigned after the January 6 insurrection, saying it left her "deeply troubled…in a way I simply cannot set aside." Chao was transportation secretary under the former president, whom she called out for anti-Asian rhetoric when he used a derisive name and suggested she had ties to the Chinese government. Chao joins Walter Isaacson to discuss the wave of anti-Asian hate that is currently menacing her community.

Married to Mitch, member of the Trump cabinet & watched as he spewed over 30,000 lies, but she wasn’t that close to him? Give me a break! But then she lost me at married to Mitch.🤮
It was a marriage of CONvenience.
We know now that Mitch wasn't close to Trump. I wouldn't fault her for saying that, it was probably true. But you do have to ask why a nice Asian lady would associate with 2 of the vilest figures in American politics.
With a white husband, she has ZERO credibility to talk about any racial issues and the Asian community.
@@paulheydarian1281 Elaine's mother, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, died in August 2007. In April 2008, Chao's father, James S. C. Chao, gave Elaine and Mitch McConnell between $5 million and $25 million, which boosted McConnell's personal worth from a minimum of $3 million in 2007 to more than $7 million.
It's a shame to have Elaine Chao on and to have her taken passes on deeper questions. She was an "Yes woman" to both George W and Trump. Chao achieved very little in 12 years as secretaries.
And what tf have you done lol? this woman cleans your clock 😴
totally agree.@@danareesullivan3126
Why even have her on? Her only answers are " I don't know" " I have no idea". It's embarrassing that she is claiming to speak on behalf of Asian Americans. She doesn't represent us regular Asian Americans and focuses on the silly names Trump calls her. She is from Taiwan so her family ties to the Chinese government is a double betrayal of both the US and Taiwan.
💯💯💯
Exactly what I was going to say 👍🏻
Exactly!!
She is speaking on behalf of Asian Americans but she also said that Asian Americans are a diverse bunch of people which is true and rarely acknowledged.
I probably need to explain to you that even the Taiwanese do business with China. That happens all the time, and you can't be enemies like that. You're from the same stock, you speak the same language, you live near to each other: what are you going to do? All Asians do business with China even as we're wary of them.
And I don't like Republicans and my first gut instinct is that a republican Asian shouldn't be speaking for Asians, but then I also recognise the good that somebody like Elaine Chao can do: she has to explain to the Republicans what Asians are like. Somebody has to take that walk into Mordor. Some republican has to speak for Asians so that people can see.
These things tie into the complexity of being Asian: you sometimes got to do what you don't like to do. Friends can be enemies and enemies can be friends. With China, with Republicans, you got to walk the tightrope.
With a white husband, she has ZERO credibility to talk about any racial issues and the Asian community.
As much as I appreciate Walter Isaacson, I cannot stomach listening to this lady.
With a white husband, she has ZERO credibility to talk about any racial issues and the Asian community.
She has no idea about anything. She is not in politics. Yet, she is married to the most powerful politician in the senate. Just a public servant?? Please, how dumb does she think the audiences are??
She IS in politics. And she’s shady af.
Aw yes! Under the Bush administration, she was Secretary of Labor and claimed the "outsourcing is a good thing". What a clown!
“Let’s see what happened” “I have no idea”, as an Asian American women I certainly don’t feel “represented” but thank you Elaine you did make me cringe.
She is equal to any male politician, a great actor
Acting alright. Avoiding questions or just ploughing ahead with prepared answers.
Her former boss is the one that ramped up anti Asian remarks when he was in the White House.
God right!? She should be embarrassed!!
Obama’s pivot to Asia. Top down Yellow Peril rhetoric.
Only that event left her troubled… hhhmmm. These people. Here skirting questions…see the way she’s answering question. All grifters. Not in politics but work in politics and married to one. Where were you when he attacked all immigrants, moslems, Africans, refugees etc.
GOP politicians, right? Where were they when trump attacked immigrants, various ethnicities, and defended white supremacists?
When I was a young child, my parents always told me to be careful who I hung around and who I called friends. As certain people do bad things, and if your around them at the wrong time, I would be considered "guilty by association". Miss Chao is the text book definition of that term, as she hung around people who she knew to be evil, and hung around them anyway, and did their bidding to advance her own agenda.
Did you mention that Chou's husband is longtime racist Senator, Mitch McConnell?
I’m shocked to see all the negative comments about her. so unfair! She speaks up for Asian Americans, what’s wrong with that?!
This is one of the worst interviews I've ever seen... I still remember that Christiane Amanpour was a journalist to be reckoned with... This is shameful.
Exactly. What's happened to this channel? Two interviews back to back of people with dubious character and agenda. 😢
She has a lot of nerve saying, first off, that she doesn’t follow politics. She’s simply a public servant and not at all a Republican puppet hitched to the vilest Republican senator alive. Kinda like Ginni Thomas not discussing her role in the ultra-conservative Republican wing with her husband Supreme Court Judge Thomas. We are not stupid, Elaine.
very well said. I agree!
her sister is dead now, definitely a chinese spy
She is no saint..how could she work for him that long..embarrassing..no sympathy for her at all!! Complicit complicit complicit…
Or war criminal GW Bush.
The content of this interview isn't consistent with the narratives usually covered on this channel, but sometimes it's necessary to cover the opposite point of view. While I don't agree with many things she says, the title for this interview is legitimate. I reluctantly watched the video, only to not dismiss her out of hand, due to her bad public image, and hear what she has to say. I found out to be a little bit of revisionist history and rehabilitation tour, and part voice for her husband, Senator McConnell. The press has not covered much of achievements, so I really don't know if she had any? A long time ago, not knowing much about government, I was proud to see other Asian Americans reach high office, but nowadays I would not pick to her to be representative of other fellow Asian Americans, let alone Taiwanese Americans.
With all of that said, I'm glad that she did cover some of the contributions of Asian immigrants to this country, and am in favor of some sort of museum. Also, she does make valid intermediate and longer term solutions encouraging more domestically grown STEM capabilities, but in the meantime, we do need to bridge the gap with more talent from abroad. As long as immigrants are matched to a job and has enough income to support a family, then they should be welcome to the USA. My father immigrated to this country from Taiwan the 1960s, when the USA needed more doctors. Since they did not recognize his medical degree from the #1 university in Taiwan, he had to pursue a PhD while moonlighting in the ER. That takes a tremendous amount of drive to evolve from "just an MD" (a major accomplishment in its own right) to becoming an "MD/Ph.D", and being well-respected and liked in our community. Back in the day, the entrance exams determined one's career path, for better or for worse. At the top of the job pyramid was the medical profession, followed by engineering as #2. Growing up in this community in Pittsburgh, all of the kids have launched successful careers branching out into other directions, as well, such as law, finance, IT, and even media.
I'm no fan of Senator McConnell, so her being married to him is.a question mark. I only watched this video to give her voice, after seeing her in high profile positions but not hearing of any of her accomplishments or viewpoints, and after hearing her family business profiteering from sweetheart government contracts, and also being targeted by Trumpets as "CoCo Chao". I thought surely, she is being misrepresented from both sides of media. After watching the interview, I still didn't learn much about her policy viewpoint that I didn't already know. It did add some color and rationale behind them though, but again this was not one of the deeper interviews- perhaps because he didn't agree with her, and this is not consistent with what the audience usually hears. Nevertheless, it's worth hearing opposing viewpoints, in an effort to break confirmation bias and avoid group-think.... Looking for that nugget/kernel of economic policy, in some cases, the government has become a competitor to the private sector, but how broadly is the case is debatable and up for further study. This sounds like a Republican talking point about "welfare queens" and "couch potatoes"....
Worthless then, worthless now. Don't waste your time on this...
Funny that the widespread systemic discrimination Asian people face in the college admissions process was not discussed. Also, why are we not allowed to discuss who exactly is committing the vast majority of physical attacks against Asian people?
My family and I have been physically, verbally and emotionally attacked by the white men including my 11 years old nephew who was attacked by a grown white man at a park in 2020.
@@moitranac6351 What did you assume I was talking about?
To be honest, as an Asian, I couldn't tell you who exactly is committing the vast majority of physical attacks against Asian people. It seems to be equal opportunity. Asian hate seems to be the only thing that unites black and white people. I was going to say that only Asian people don't attack Asian people, but I suddenly remembered my tiger parents.
@moitranac6351 a white man at a park? Probably some transient. Here in OC ca Asian business people are targeted by blacks that drive in from surrounding cities.
Chao's official website has a searchable running list of her speeches, op-eds, and news items. So far, none of them address the discrimination Asian people face in the college admissions process.
After she stood by when Trump made his “both sides had very fine people” Charlottesville argument, Secretary Chao was asked what she thought. She said she would stand by both “her guys”, meaning her husband and Trump.
Wow what a dud of an interview. Probably smart though of her to deflect on questions about trump--he and his supporters will gladly make her life a living hell and I'm sure they've already tormented her.
Mr. Isaacson in author mode more than reporter mode here.
TBH, she doesn't represent Asian American at all. Shame on her.
Exactly 💯 she doesn't represent any of my Asian friends. I will never understand why they put her on their show
I like that she is very fact based and not a “cry-baby” like others…
Deeply troubled... Was she asleep before January 6 🙄
Denial isn't just a river in Africa!
Humanity means that human suffering must be addressed wherever it is found, with particular attention to the most vulnerable.
Elaine, mitch needs medical attention now. This is no joke but genuine concern. He does not act or look remotely like himself. Somebody help.
**I have nothing**
Before I see a Museum on the Washington mall, dedicated to the Asian American, which represents 7.3% of the American populous, I want to see a museum dedicated to the outstanding women of America, which represents 50.4% of the American populace and are frankly not represented in the museums within the Smithsonian.
i support the idea of an Asian Cultural Museum. Go for it Elaine Chao!
Another fact overlooked in this interview is the how much the low wages dissuade people from entering and re-entering the work force. Low wages and high cost of housing, coupled with the high cost of benefits- medical care copays and deductibles, and high expense of child care, who can work? Besides the fact that it costs so much to go to work, there is also the physical and mental cost to the worker. Laborers need respect, a livable wage, affordable benefits, quality childcare by people who are paid as professionals.
Neutrality means that Humanitarian aid must not be reduced, eliminated, or capitalized on by any side.
It is March 2024 and with much speculation about the tragic end of her prominent sister Angela.
She said she's not, but sure sounds like a politician. And why call Taiwan a little island in the news. She CCP sympathizes. 😮
Why Elaine DONT CHAMPION this historical fact of the Great Railway builders
for ALL SCHOOL EDUCATION ???
Doesnt sound like she’s answering to any question …
Listening to her makes me yawn. How does anyone take her seriously (rhetorical)?
She's hard to pin down and get a straight answer from. McConnells wife indeed.
Humanitarian principles define what humanitarian aid is: delivering care to ALL IN NEED that maintains an ability to WORK making a Living Wage with all the assistance NEEDED without any adverse distinction.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET THEM BACK? Humanitarian Programs.
Independence means the autonomy of humanitarian objectives from political, economic, military or other objectives.
a very able politician who 'really isn't into politics'.....
Yeah, I caught that too . . .
She's quick to point to shortage in labor as the reason to fuel more H1B1 Visas but the truth is they don't want employers to have to raise wages to attract American workers we have plenty of STEM skilled individuals its just they are not willing to settle for low pay but now you want to flood the market with cheap labor...
She’s a kisses the ass of Russia
They distinguish humanitarian aid from other activities, for example those of political, religious, ideological or military nature. Adherence to the humanitarian principles facilitates access to all
Let's Examine the millions of people in OUR COUNTRY who have not come back to the Work Force!
Impartiality means that humanitarian aid must be provided solely on the basis of need, without discrimination.
a solid point though, hostility against Chinese is one of the best ways to isolate expats, that just aids the CCP's efforts to maintain power over them. treating a neighbor like a neighbor seems a damn fine way to bolster a nation to me.
It was other Americans that also built the railroads.
Unified government: trump, McConnell, and Ryan. Also did nothing about immigration.
Love her
This prejudice has in our country needs to end. I guess she feels like the LGBTQ community. Maybe she should support the community.
“Relocated a small island called Taiwan”
😂 as a well-educated Chinese woman. She has no idea how important “Taiwan “is to the Chinese modern history or she just to avoid the background. Her father was one of the top CCP formal leader‘s very close friend.
What a traitor of a spy 🤢
I do not disagree with Chao's description and concern about anti-Asian sentiment.
Seems you forgot her husband still serves THE POWER that be! 😏
"Kong Flu", said her boss. And she didn't speak up or resign.
Okay Elaine, you tell us a large percentage of Asian Americans fear a return to a detainment camp regime in America for Asians. Who exactly do they believe will enact this and of course why??. I trully wouldn't mind an answer 从 m this begins at about 16:30 in the video. 16:30
She and her husband allowed Trump and the current Republican extremism to take hold. There is no redemption from this. And anti-Asian sentiments have existed in their Republican party even before Trump. This is more expediency and opportunism from Chao.
Oh the irony of saying she doesn’t want to talk politics. Or the cognitive dissonance of wanting to expose how the Asian population was exploited without acknowledging that Americans are being exploited with low wages. This is double speak of the right wing.
Done with Amanpour!
Boring. She doesn't answer any questions. Dodges most questions. I just left, I will not watch anymore
What a waste of time having her on. A yes woman scared to upset the GOP
Chinese Built America Transcontinental railroad i 19th century. Today 21st century Wumao and his 50cents army built Oakland bay bridge 🌉. Massachusetts and Chicago subway transit system.
She is not a good model
No self awareness
It's Sierra Nevada....not Sierra Madre....
Oh exclude some ... but white men can mail order Asian beauties ?
Hi my family has deep ties with the CCP but lets not talk about it. I have a lot of infuance on my old geezer husband Mitch. I forgot to tell you we own a major shipping conglomerate corporations you don't kmow about and we do most our business with the Chinese CCP, but lets not bring that up.
I got to say it she's too pretty for Mitch McConnell. Must be the money; I don't know.
she got money - she bought him - go figure
Thank you, Secretary Chao 💙
Rewrite history is a Chinese specialty, built into the bone ; utilitarian opportunist. 👎👎 . Chao’s face and talk does not do justice for Asian Americans
Dame bs i came here when i was 8 blah blah blah bs
She’s shady, her very wealty shipping family is shady and benefits from from shady republican pro business legislation.
This woman plays the Asian American immigrant card, and full of cliche.
