  • Five years ago, directors Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee and Zoya Akhtar made short films for the omnibus Bombay Talkies. This time the four of them are back with another omnibus, Lust Stories, for Netflix. Here, they talk about how they have evolved as filmmakers from the first film, their interpretation of lust, and how the digital medium has changed the viewing experience.

Anyone else noticed how Anupama directs a question towards Zoya at 4:57 (she says "Zoya") and Anurag starts answering. 😁

    • @KOOOLICE
      @KOOOLICE 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Hansika Singh Relax.
I think it was a smalll mistake.
The question began with "are you four.."
It was a generic question directed towards all four and with Anupama looking towards her left and at the very last second, after she finished her Q she said "Zoya."
It is very likely that Anurag must have already started thinking about his reply as she looked in his direction and before she could finish he started speaking.
Though he could have acknowledged Zoya with something like "oh sorry, you go ahead."

All I can see is a tired half-asleep yawning man who had a brain fart moment.
As I said the question was for all four... AK just wasn't able to catch the last second name drop by Anu.
      That's it.

Anurag, zoya are suppressed people, they express more in their work. Dibakar is quite a introvert and hence a brilliant director, for he listens. Hence maybe Johar had the responsibility to speak for all of them most of them. Maybe

Karan at his articulate best providing some great insight in the first 10 minutes. The bit about his view of the rebirth of the 3 individuals to his right as filmmakers really added some great perspective that I feel I would never gotten otherwise and added another dimension to the understanding of the body of work (thematically speaking) of the 3 filmmakers. Kudos to FC as well for providing a stage enablinng and effecting all this. Cheers!

    Dear Anupama Mam,
Thanks a lot! This has been great! So nice to see the BT team together again, in their next. Also, it feels really interesting to catch glimpses of the movies . Shall catch the same soon. I always love to hear Karan , I guess no one interferes when he does so, because he is damn entertaining and they having fun as well. Look at Anurag and the others , how they enjoyed that farfarra story! All his Bombay Velvet interviews too!
I really feel, Karan has been evolving to be a much much better film maker. It is pretty evident in all his films, if you take a look at the graph. The concepts, how he has been dealing with them too. Way to go Karan! I All the best, Zoya, Dibakar and Anurag Sir too. Not a great Dibakar fan, but love love love the other three....

What makes a good director .. hmm grt question, and we have a potluck of responses,
clarity of vision, Convincing others pre.. & post production and rallying the team esp when the chips are down.
    the director is the visionary.
he needs humility & ego both, humility to know if the path could be better, and ego to say no, when he knows he is on the intended path.

I think it is great that top Indian directors can get their work seen by American audiences on Netflix but I think Netflix mostly shows Hindi films that are mostly based in an urban environment with Western themes. They seem to not want to take a chance on a rural or lower class hero or people like in Anurag Kashyap films or Gully Boy by Zoya Akhtar or even Banerjee's Shanghai (too political about a fictional American company that was really Enron who took huge advantage of India in the 80s and then went out of business owing to all it's bad karma). There is a book called 99 Nights in Logar about a U.S. raised 2nd generation Afghan guy who goes on a trip back to Afghanistan to visit his relatives. It is written by Jamil Jan Kochai, who looks almost exactly like a young Anurag Kashyap. This book was published by American publisher Viking and is being virtually ignored and or criticized by American critics or the most serious successful American book authors because except for constant war, it is too rural South Asian in theme. And I don't think Netflix would ever fund a film of this book made by either Anurag or Zoya yet it very much has the flavor of Kabul Express which though a thriller, is a Hindi language masterful exploration of Afghanistan. 99 Nights gets even more direct and even Karan might be interested in the fantasy scenes. I thinks it's highly ironic that American cinema feels superior to Hindi cinema when their last and maybe only great rural life film was The Grapes of Wrath many moons ago. I just think it's just really sad that maybe Anurag Kashyap has to go urban, that we won't have any more of his rural village hero or heroine films because those films won't bring enough money or enough viewership. Full disclosure, I have many many DVDs of Hindi films and many of the new films are not coming out on DVD or they are original streaming content that I will never see unless I sign up with all the providers. I get it, I am less than 1/2 percent of the total worldwide Hindi film audience so I was just supremely lucky to get my film DVDs. But I think Netflix will not run Hindi content that won't fetch a higher viewership and I think that hurts the industry and curtails major directors creativity. If I ever see Lust Stories or Sacred Games I will probably appreciate and enjoy them. But Sacred Games is such a brilliant book. I don't think it could ever be fully duplicated as a two season series on Netflix no matter how good. It's just sad.

First off Karan spoiled the movie for everyone and I really wanted to hear more from Zoya but unfortunately, there was a camera hog present who didn't allow her to speak.

There seems to be a lot of tension among these directors. Anurag does not like Zoya or Karan. Dibakar is not sure who is on his side. Karan as usual hogs the whole show

The moment I read that Karan Johar co-directed it, my entire biology instantly rejected it and impeded me from watching the movie. He is such a misfit to be amongst directors with higher calibre. Probably I should just skip his part and go in for Anurag, Zoya, and Dibakar.

This interview was bound to be lopsided with Karan Johar however, the Film or Films were awesome! And Karan’s was funny and self deprecating while the others had more serious and darker stories.
