copying Splatoon and its success wasn't as easy as Square Enix thought, Splatoon is Nintendos 5th biggest franchise and it's Pokemon level popular in Japan, 4th biggest if you don't count Pokemon, and the biggest franchise above Splatoon is Animal Crossing and that was made by the same developers as Splatoon
The issue with foam stars is that it's beta released around splatoon three disappointing DLC "Side Order" was an awful launch. It took a heavy amount of inspiration from splatoon and the only individuals who would wanted to play foam stars are potential splatoon fans or sony owners who do not own a switch. You can see how much trouble the game was in when the fairly new game was given away for free for PS+ subscribers long before it went F2P. I like the color style. Splatoon has saturated paint contrast on dull more gray surface. Foamstar is on the same but opposite spectrum with bright pastel color contrasting on the darker surfaces. Both methods is very readable during gameplay and both stands out very much in a sea of realistic multiplayer games. In another world, I can see Foamstar becoming an extension of the Rave scene and JD and music artists would do collabs. The art style and foam theming fits that subculture.
This lasted less time than another live service game that was compared to splatoon (artstyle/character design wise) called Ninjala, that game is still getting updates and is a switch exclusive.
Never got my head round the exclusivity decision on this one, it just seemed daft both to request it and to give it. Presumably someone in the chain of command had their reasons, but they clearly didn’t work out.
Foamstars was cursed the moment it became a PS5 EXCLUSIVE. There's a reason the joke 'The PS5 has no games' is a thing and part of that comes from no one is really interested in buying a PS5 thanks in part to the cost and the paltry libray of games that it has, on top of the hardware itself not feeling like it has anything to offer that is *ACTUALLY* new. And that's not even getting into the live-service drama, with people LOUDLY procilaming that they're tired of it, with many titles crashing due to it but companies just aren't listening and keep taking L after L after L. And this is going to sound VERY petty of me but I don't care at this point; the character designs of Foamstars IS generic. Splatoon is VERY recognizable not just because of the sea theme to the characters but they really do stand out out in terms of a lot of character designs from the past 10 years or so, especially with how customizable your character can be while having VERY simple base designs from the ground. Foamstars is playing very close to generic anime style but it's a style that seems to be used by almost every cheap game that wants to HOOK with the anime asthethic. It's one of the reasons I didn't really care for the Pokemon Go trainer style when it came out because it was away from the classic and very familiar iconic look of the Pokemon human style that, again, sticks out and is identifiable against a lot of games. Even when they did a style shift for the Sun and Moon anime, it still stuck to a lot of characteristics from the original but had it's own 'flare' to it. And the sad thing about that is this is coming from SE, you'd think they'd try something different but I don't know. Foamstars was trying WAY TOO HARD be Splatoon for the PS but because of that it really didn't have a unique indenity. It just comes off as a mobile clone more than anything else and I know that wasn't what they were going for. The shooting theme (foam) sounds fun but there's just something missing. Edit: Yeah, my big ADD mind remembered what it was going to say about IDENTITY; it's BECAUSE your character is a blank slate that works with Splatoon. Yeah, they hook you in with buying more crap for your character but when you start, that character is YOURS. Everything in Foamstar is premade so in a way, it feels like it was trying to be Overwatch/Fortnite WITH a Splatoon mechanic by throwing HYPER SPECIFIC (already designed) characters in your face when Splatoon also has the character creator on its side, even if it's very simple when you begin. You're not playing as someone else in Splatoon. You're playing YOU so it just feels more personal. The same thing happened when Pokemon allowed for more customization of your trainer. You weren't just playing as a pre-made avatar but you had that option if you wanted to. THAT'S one thing that Foamstars needed; an option for character creation as well as the ones that were already canon to the lore. They could still manage 'classes' within that so I don't understand what was stopping them.
2:18 "Square Enix instead of innovating on their own copy a popular idea from Japan..." You made it sound like Square Enix is a US company, in fact the whole video feels like that
Here it is. The game that Captain Astronaut rips and tears a new one. I heard horror stories about this game, including AI generated. Scummy corporate business practices that makes me want to shy away from other franchises. Competed against Splatoon without causing Nintendo to cease and desist.
even their single player games are suffering, don't care what game media says even players FF16 didn't make that much money and FF7 rebirth didn't make that much either issue they were PS5 exclusives
FF7rebirth and 16 make bank whenever they arrive on steam, Took them long enough to understand they need to put their games on pc or suffer great financial loss
Like I've always preferred Sony consoles since I was a kid as a JRPG fanatic, but the Switch has been my go-to. I looked at the list of games on PS5 and was like "..Nah not worth the price. I'll stick to my PC and Switch." and that gives me enough game coverage to overall play what I like.
Never heard of this game. PS exclusive? Oh what a death knell that term has become. If Sony ever lets go of the console war mentality maybe they could start making money again. Microsoft and Nintendo stopped caring a while ago. TLDR: Sony is the only kid still in the playground holding his fort while the rest of the kids grew up.
Pretty sure the Baristador was made up by AI as he's literally just a barista combined with the word matador. No sane human would come up with that and think "this is a worthwhile character in my paint foam color hero shooter"
The only thing differing this from Concord is that somehow this got more players. I’d say Foamstar’s failure was more deserved, since at least the people who made the game weren’t lambasted unlike concord’s devs. (Seriously, I don’t think it was right to bully them)
If anyone recalls Splatoon launched unfinished as it got some key updates after launch but had the benefit of being a unique title on a console that was starved for games. In that way an argument could be made that Splatoon's success was a little lucky. Foamstars on the other hand is just another clone lost amongst a sea of other games
Not gonna lie, when you said "Coiff Guy" I said to myself, "That... sounds like... Queef Guy", so when you said shortly after that it sounded like queef, I burst out laughing XD
Gonna be real honest and say this one legitimately makes me so sad to see. This is a genuinely fun game and I feel like so many outside factors kept people from trying it out, right next to the console exclusivity. I can't count how many times I've introduced this game to friends and they wished it was on consoles they've owned (PC and Switch) but I had to let them know it was unavailable on those consoles. The character designs are so good to me and the soundtrack is a blast, it was even composed by some of the composers that worked on the Drakengard and Nier series! I love the various genres of music like EDM, disco, swing, dubstep, etc.. Sure, the game has its flaws, I won't say it's perfect, but as a huge fan of the series, I can assure you the universe, lore and characters (especially the latter) are what got me hooked into the game. I truly feel like Square Enix fumbled this one so badly and I'm disappointed and sad to see it no longer getting new content. I hope something comes up that gives this game a second chance because I honestly believe this one really deserves it.
This game was actually fun but should've been free at launch and promoted properly. It's sad that fun games like this (Rumbleverse, Knockout City) get shelved so quickly
Foamstars is basically a SPLATOON knockoff that could have had an interesting mechanics, but, it’s just another microtransaction stuffed live service game….
Squenix has this habit of doing this with games where they only see dollar signs. Instead of just making a good game and selling it at a box price the monetization slaughters any hope the game could have. Even in Foamstars announcement you could hear crickets in the background. It was very tone deaf even if the art and music were great. I'm still so salty over Chocobo GP.
Could say the same about Sony. It is insane, how many times after a Nintendo Direct, you see a post about which games are also coming to PlayStation. But PS5 has no games exists for a reason.
It honestly makes me sad we won’t get any new seasons, I loved this game, it was so fun playing it whenever I was on my ps4. All the characters were amazing in their own right even Ramzey! 😅 Idk maybe they can come back with new DLC but we just have to wait and see.
It managed to outlive Concord by a fair bit. It also doesn't look bland, it doesn't have hideous character design, and it tried to do something to fill in a niche even if it was very similar to Splatoon.
I remember being hesitantly excited for this game when it first was announced. I like Splatoon, so if it came to PC I’d probably play it a lot! Then I heard it was a PS exclusive, so I assumed I’d have to wait awhile for it to get a PC port. What killed it for me was the AI art. If it’s such a small part of all the art ingame, then it shouldn’t have been a big deal to have real people make it. Lost all interest then and there. Sorry Foamstars, you could’ve had a new customer if you didn’t fumble the bag there.
Even if you can disregard the AI imagery, microtransactions, and plagiarism, Foamstars is still bad because the foam is basically Blood. That’s just disgusting.
I May be alone on this take but the biggest mistake they had on this game, is that they actually throught they had Kids owning a ps5 and playing games on it lol
I feel sad for Foamstars, I really wanted to play it, but Square Enix was too busy huffing Sony to make it available on all platforms. 😢 Oh Dauntless next? I used to played that all the time back when it was good. 😑
I remember seeing the first trailer and thought it looked pretty cool. Months past and I was so curious what happened to this game. I didnt even know it was out. Given I'm more pc then ps but Idk.
I laughed insanely hard playing marvel rivals mode for jeff’s winter whatever. Longstory short its splatoon and foamstars but better and easier to play. In one mode. Embarrassing
Strangely enough I found the games soundtrack before I even knew the game was even a thing. And when I asked people said the soundtrack was the only positive aspect LOL 🤣 Still it always sucks when a game flops deserved or otherwise. Square Enix should reattempt this concept but with a better model cause having a good Splatoon clone not held hostage on a Nintendo platform is a concept that CAN work!
thinking of design, Nintendo deliberately design Splatoon for kids, as seen with the squishy models, colors, the theme, etc all focused solely on making it fun to see and play, and considering their player base, family friendly from old to new players alike. looking at Foamstars, the gameplay might be similar, but there's nothing to target the player base, especially in the designs. how do I mean it? all the characters, play area, etc, they're all themed around disco and clubbing, and sure, PS players might also go to clubs, not all who own one are club goers or identify with that imagery, besides the game play itself. it's like trying to pull a whole ass crowd of a different type of animal to enjoy something they though of as fun without even knowing what the habitat of said animal is. Nintendo tries to make gaming an activity that brings generations of players together, while PS, in trying to imitate that, is only designing it for niches, terrible marketing for the wrong platform.
I truly think there's only one real reason for the death of this game: it's migraine-inducing. Where the f am I supposed to look when every single colour on my screen is SCREAMING AT ME?
As someone who has never played either spatoon or foamstars I don’t really see a difference… yea obviously I can see that paint and foam are essentially different but in terms of gameplay the two games look pretty similar in my eyes.
The ai art point gets even worse when you look at it as another point of comparison with splatoon. You might not think that it's the biggest deal or the most important place to spend time and attention to, but when compared to splatoon, Nintendo has created several fictional bands to front up the game's music. The difference in the level of actual effort on those "smaller" details really let's you see how much a company is going to try to make whatever game work.
I gave foamstars a go on release. And yeah, it only lasted about an hour. The single player mode did indeed feel like a tutorial, and was hard to see the fun. I could see the aggressive monetisation though. So I turned it off without regret. I thought it was angling for an early teen vibe with the foamstars living an aspirational high roller party lifestyle. But a parent approved one, without drugs or booze (despite you having a private bartender and bar.) I liked that it was trying (even if hamfistedly) to promote an inclusive, non-toxic community.
Ngl I forget this game exists until somebody brings it up online. I feel like something that Splatoon also has over Foamstars is world building, since holy fuck Nintendo did a lot of world building for Splatoon (even if most is supplementary material that’s Japanese only, which is kinda frustrating- though there’s an active community that track down and translate these). The world feels like an actual fleshed out place, down to making characters that only appear in artwork have a paragraph or so of info.
Everytime square does live service it fails. Everytime they go PS exclusive it fails or causes problems/low sales. Stacking $30 with being an exclusive on a platform typically associated with single player games was a bad idea. Cross plat $30 would have helped. Free exclusive would have helped. Stacking the 2 was a death sentence

Sony desperate to get a live service game
It could have been overconfidence. Splatoon after all is Nintendo exclusive. They might have thought “if Nintendo can do it. Then Foam Stars can too.”
Dude my little brother plays this game every day on ps4, he literally was playing a couple hours ago.
Reminds me of the one guy playing lawbreakers before it died. Godspeed little dude 😆
2:18 "Square Enix instead of innovating on their own copy a popular idea from Japan..."
You made it sound like Square Enix is a US company, in fact the whole video feels like that
Huh? I said neighbor at one point
Here it is. The game that Captain Astronaut rips and tears a new one. I heard horror stories about this game, including AI generated. Scummy corporate business practices that makes me want to shy away from other franchises. Competed against Splatoon without causing Nintendo to cease and desist.
Probably because Nintendo knew it would Cease & Desist itself.
even their single player games are suffering, don't care what game media says even players FF16 didn't make that much money and FF7 rebirth didn't make that much either issue they were PS5 exclusives
FF7rebirth and 16 make bank whenever they arrive on steam,
Took them long enough to understand they need to put their games on pc or suffer great financial loss
Like I've always preferred Sony consoles since I was a kid as a JRPG fanatic, but the Switch has been my go-to. I looked at the list of games on PS5 and was like "..Nah not worth the price. I'll stick to my PC and Switch." and that gives me enough game coverage to overall play what I like.
wannabe splatoon so bad but forgot to actually make it good
Never heard of this game.
I saw the trailer for this game and said, "Oh yeah, this is going to crash and fuckin' BURN." So I already knew it was gonna fail from the start.
The only thing differing this from Concord is that somehow this got more players.
I’d say Foamstar’s failure was more deserved, since at least the people who made the game weren’t lambasted unlike concord’s devs. (Seriously, I don’t think it was right to bully them)
I was genuinely waiting for this game to leave console exclusivity so I could try it on PC with my friends
There's a universe where SE funded a third Deus Ex. We got the shit universe.
lol
Toylogic being mention has reminded me that Happy Wars and Happy Dungeons exists. YOU HAVE GOT TO DO A VIDEO ON THAT ONE.
I used to play the hell out of Happy Wars back on the Xbox 360.
@@dsshocktrooper7523 Same!
Never heard of the game till now.
All (foam) stars fade out at some point.
Best thing for me that foamstars came up with was the lit ass theme that plays during the tutorial. Had to IMMEDIATELY download that
the game everyone knew would fail, failed lol
Making this a PS5 exclusive killed this
See you all in 10 years when this game becomes lost media
Squenix has this habit of doing this with games where they only see dollar signs. Instead of just making a good game and selling it at a box price the monetization slaughters any hope the game could have. Even in Foamstars announcement you could hear crickets in the background. It was very tone deaf even if the art and music were great.
I'm still so salty over Chocobo GP.
Oh god I forgot about Chocobo GP... making that Kart racer a Switch exclusive was beyond dumb.
Seeing this video was in production was basically how I found out this game ever released.
Square Enix's biggest weakness is their lack of marketing and PR for their upcoming titles
Idk maybe they can come back with new DLC but we just have to wait and see.
Ah yes Foamstars, Concord before Concord
It managed to outlive Concord by a fair bit. It also doesn't look bland, it doesn't have hideous character design, and it tried to do something to fill in a niche even if it was very similar to Splatoon.
ow
Well, at least foam stars is still playable
That just doesn't even make sense
Hold this L
SquareEnix needs to stop with this tomfoolery and get back to making some damn good games again.
I recently heard that Dauntless had fallen off. Which stings because I like Monster Hunter style games.
You like Wild Hearts? That game is cool 😎
@@dsshocktrooper7523 I heard that it's good. I didn't have time to check it out tho.
To be fair enix deserves it for making the exclusivity shit when it's clearly such a stupid idea
I swear, this sounded like an adult bubble party or rave.
My friends and I made a bet when foamstars was announced
What year will it die
Oh boy Dauntless is gonna be a wild ride
I think the “paint” in splatoon is “ink”
true
Even if you can disregard the AI imagery, microtransactions, and plagiarism, Foamstars is still bad because the foam is basically Blood. That’s just disgusting.
My work here is done
I didn't even know this game existed.
I May be alone on this take but the biggest mistake they had on this game, is that they actually throught they had Kids owning a ps5 and playing games on it lol
Astro Bot 🤖
I said Kids, not games, astrobot is not the answer to everything ps5 related.
>playstation exclusive
>live service
>multiplayer only.
LMAO.
If it was F2P on PC I would have at least tried it. I’m sure many others would as well.
I feel sad for Foamstars, I really wanted to play it, but Square Enix was too busy huffing Sony to make it available on all platforms. 😢
Oh Dauntless next? I used to played that all the time back when it was good. 😑
How soon before Fairgame$ ends up on this channel?
so many games are launching DOA these days man 😞
24:58 and now I'm about to feel unbridled pain. the death of dauntless.
24:58 Man I still remember playing Dauntless
I remember seeing the first trailer and thought it looked pretty cool. Months past and I was so curious what happened to this game. I didnt even know it was out. Given I'm more pc then ps but Idk.
AI imagery*, not art
by definition it cannot create art
I laughed insanely hard playing marvel rivals mode for jeff’s winter whatever. Longstory short its splatoon and foamstars but better and easier to play. In one mode. Embarrassing
I really loved this game... the music is phenomenal 😢
Oh yeah Splattoon for shitheads, I actually liked this game
Happy you're here to let us know the game existed at some point in time, wouldn't have known that otherwise lmao
Strangely enough I found the games soundtrack before I even knew the game was even a thing. And when I asked people said the soundtrack was the only positive aspect LOL 🤣
Still it always sucks when a game flops deserved or otherwise. Square Enix should reattempt this concept but with a better model cause having a good Splatoon clone not held hostage on a Nintendo platform is a concept that CAN work!
Only memory of this is chat calling it splatoon clone
i am the only foamstars fan
I am the second
there's dozens of us!
What is the name of the song at the end?
thinking of design, Nintendo deliberately design Splatoon for kids, as seen with the squishy models, colors, the theme, etc all focused solely on making it fun to see and play, and considering their player base, family friendly from old to new players alike.
looking at Foamstars, the gameplay might be similar, but there's nothing to target the player base, especially in the designs. how do I mean it? all the characters, play area, etc, they're all themed around disco and clubbing, and sure, PS players might also go to clubs, not all who own one are club goers or identify with that imagery, besides the game play itself. it's like trying to pull a whole ass crowd of a different type of animal to enjoy something they though of as fun without even knowing what the habitat of said animal is.
Nintendo tries to make gaming an activity that brings generations of players together, while PS, in trying to imitate that, is only designing it for niches, terrible marketing for the wrong platform.
I didn't even get to when you mentioned something similar when I wrote this, at least, that's my first impression on the game
Foamstars looked so good but id love a pc release or something similar i rlly loved the foam concept and flashy pop aesthetic
Can’t believe toylogic wasted their resources on this garbage instead of warlander or happy wars 2.
I played one match of this game and after a minute it glitched kicking everyone. I uninstalled immediately
The only time i have saw anything related to this game before this video was people making fun of it on twitter
Dauntless death, that i am expecting :)
Thanks detective
I gave foamstars a go on release. And yeah, it only lasted about an hour. The single player mode did indeed feel like a tutorial, and was hard to see the fun. I could see the aggressive monetisation though. So I turned it off without regret.
I thought it was angling for an early teen vibe with the foamstars living an aspirational high roller party lifestyle. But a parent approved one, without drugs or booze (despite you having a private bartender and bar.)
I liked that it was trying (even if hamfistedly) to promote an inclusive, non-toxic community.
Great video. Definitely needed the background and maps to be brighter. Would take a Splatoon clone over this edgy splatoon.
Ah, Foamstars. The “Destruction All-Stars” of… wait. 😅
2:40 This mechanic is not that unique, Crazy Shooting Bubble Fighter (2009) from Nexon featured this mechanic first I believe.
Death of a game drops
It's a game I've never heard of a single time. Yea checks out
Ever since i saw dauntless the first time, it was always in the "why would i ever play this instead of Monster Hunter World", i get it being freetoplay was the appeal, but not having followed any news, i cant relate to the pain other commenters are having following its announced demise
Isn’t it still ongoing???
