Having previously raised endangered tigers and big cats in his family home, Giles travels to Laos in Asia, where sun and moon bears are under threat due to illegal bear bile farming. Mary is a darling! Guessing she'll have to be introduced to other sun bears soon as those human-bear play fights aren't going to be sustainable as she gets bigger. Though big animals co-existing with humans do tend to learn over time we're more fragile than they are and handle us accordingly - but she's still just a baby and so it starts to become a bit of a gamble rough-housing with her.
@AM Exactly. As a matter of fact, an adult sun bear "killed" a human being.

Correct. Mary was tiny and in a terrible state when we rescued her, requiring 24 hour special care. At this point we didn't yet have a cub nursery build (we're a small struggling Australia wildlife charity - although that being said, we are currently rescuing far more bears than any other wildlife charity worldwide - 47 bears rescued since January 2018!) so she needed to be hand-reared inside our CEO's house. Normally we'd have a cub nursery for her and potentially other cubs, so as to keep human contact to a minimum. Regardless as you can see, it doesn't take long for sun bear cubs (and moon bear cubs - we are the world leader in rescuing and rehabilitating sun bear and moon bears cubs) to become destructive and dangerous. We were lucky with Mary, she is an incredibly sweet and highly intelligent bear. Nonetheless many months ago we ceased all contact with her, but luckily she now has a large enclosure and sun bear friends - watch the BBC Two Bears About The House to hear Mary's story and many others which the BBC experienced while with us in Laos (where I'm tying this from) over a year. I call my dog a sun bear all the time. He’s goofy and rolls around in the sun spots on the grass often and he sounds like a bear.

I had a Sergeant in the Army who was a martial arts in something with a black belt and he was also a French boxer and a pro UFC fighter. Anyways, his nickname was “The SunBear”. Never knew it was a real animal. The personality of how this Sun Bear acts resembles my old Sergeant though. Crazy in all aspects.
Couldn't even begin to express what I would give to have the life of one of those handlers right now. House, car, savings, its all valueless right now. But that life, that type of purpose or contribution, priceless.
She is very active and playful. it must be very difficult to film. Lovely baby sun bear! Help keep the rare animals safe. Thank you so much for your effort.

Baby bears are a real delight, along with most other wild baby critters. But baby bears are not pets. They will become large and powerful predators/omnivores, and their idea of play will be fatal for most humans.
Also, I've had kittens and puppies, and they are incredibly destructive--almost as destructive as young humans.
Trying to keep a baby bear around the house is asking for both you and the bear to become un-homed.

Not easy, but fun! I hope she gets some sun bear company one day - if only to save the humans around her! It won't be long before it'll be too dangerous to be with her. Not that she'll turn nasty, but her idea of play could be lethal with no intention on her part to harm anyone. It's wonderful that she's in a place that will care for her as long as she needs it, but it's heartbreaking that it has to exist.

We can't wait to see the BBC TWO broadcast of #BearsAboutTheHouse on July 15. Mary is one of almost 1,000 sun bears, moon bears & sloth bears that we've helped rescue. All 3 species are classified as Vulnerable to Extinction on the IUCN Red List. We care for hundreds of rescued bears at our sanctuaries. Many of the bears are injured or were taken as cubs after their mothers were killed by poachers,. Without suitable protected forest for release, we'll likely be looking after them for life. We are a non-profit charity started by Australian grandmother Mary Hutton, who this year was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to conservation & the environment. @ was named after our founder Mary Hutton. It is bad because, since they are not in their habitat, they have a high percentage of dying, since only with very specific care so that the bears live or that they live in their habitat, they will be able to survive.
Wild animals do not make pets. Ever. Believe us when we say they quickly become very destructive and dangerous. Sun bear cubs often end up in the exotic 'pet' trade in Asia, and then once they grow a few months and become dangerous, they end up spending their entire lives (which can last 30-40 years) in a tiny cage or are killed or sold to bile farms. These Sun Bears have been treated so horribly for so long because of their bile used in Chinese medicine. Absolutely criminal especially in this day and time. So many live their whole lives in a tiny cage !!! I'm so grateful for these rescued animals and that they are being brought up in a safe refuge. Keep up the great work and hopefully their population will increase in the wild. (This pandemic has had great side effects for the environment and our animals. I only hope when it ends we will remember that all lives matter especially our fellow animals that we are responsible for respecting and protecting always.)
If they had taken time to intentionally just play with her for 20 minutes before photographing, it may not have been so difficult. Very cute!

These people were incompetent. They allowed 2 #AsiaticBlackBear (#UrsusThibetanus) cubs to be stolen from the enclosure. The cage didn't even have a roof, so the vile thieves didn't even need to break in. They all would go home at night and leave the bears and the sanctuary completely unattended! #DumberThanMyDog
Often we so called human are the savage ones, I seen them rarely as well these days here on Sumatra unlike back in the 80's and 90's where I seen them a lot.

Adult sun bears can be quite territorial and vicious attackers. There have been reports of sun bears killing people. But most of the time you will never see them.
