  • 2024 Beta 300 Race Edition vs 2023 Beta 300 Race Edition ridden back to back! This dual plug '24 300RE engine from Beta might be the best running 2-stroke I've ridden to date. Smooth broad and clean running power with a simple carburetor and mechanical power valve. But my 2023 Beta 300 Race Edition also ran to clean and smooth....is the new dual plug engine better?
    My long time buddy and fellow engineer George (who bought my 2023 Beta 300 Race Edition) and I both rode my new '24 300RE (about 2.1 hours use) and his '23 300RE (about 13.2 hours use) back to back in an open area to see if we could feel any difference in the power. After going back and forth between the bikes we noted the following about the engines:
    1. Both engines offer broad smooth and clean running power
    2. The dual plug engine might have a touch more roll on torque feel at low to mid RPM but this is a subtle difference
    3. There was a little bit less oil residue on the end of the silencer on the dual plug engine (perhaps simply the silencer packing was more absorbing due to ~11 hours less run time)
    4. While this had nothing to do with the engines the '24 seat was noticeably more comfortable! Finally a decent seat!
    Overall not as big of a difference as both of us expected though we only rode the bikes around an open field. Perhaps there will be more of a difference in feel when we do back to back rides on moto tracks and woods loops later this spring. We are both now more interested to see if we can feel any difference in the 10mm wider main frame tube.
    Here are my thoughts so far on the 24 300RE. Dual spark plugs liven up the low to mid engine response and torque feel. The updated 300 Race Edition engine builds RPM's slightly quicker with very smooth and controllable power and runs super clean. Updated seat is noticeably better (softer and more comfortable) than the 2023 300 Race Edition seat. Maxxis tires are DOT approved and OK in dry condition but not so in softer conditions. KYB suspension feels good right off the showroom floor though in soft/slippery trail conditions. I was a little worried about the stuffer frame feeling more rigid but have not noticed any negatives and the tire contact patch feedback is good. Need to get the '23 300RE on a motocross track to see if the new frame changes the handling feel, especially in the dry hard pack type bumps. First impressions of the updated dual spark plug engine are very good! Beta Rideability! Looking forward to more rides soon!

      @@mxengineer1 ecu only control PowerValve on these?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mrmoparrr No - the Beta 300RE uses a mechanical power valve. The spring preload is adjustable and that effects the opening timing of the PV. There are also (2) different maps: Sun (full power) and Rain (smoother power).

    I'll take either of them!! I like my KTM, I checked out Beta, but they are pricey, also only have one dealer within 100 miles of where I live.

      Yes both 300's work great! Local dealer support is important...I am lucky to have a great local Beta dealer (Pony Powersports).

    There plugs are $25 each and you can only get them from Beta. I think I'm going to get the 200 Race edition. Perfect power for trails even for a guy around 220 pounds like me.

    Was the powervalve set the same on both bikes as I no you adjusted the 23 in an earlier video. I look at this bike as a collectors bike as they are going to fuel injection in 2025 and this will be a one year only bike. My 2024 300 Race just came in and cant wait to ride it. Love your video's

      Enjoy your new 24 300 "Collectors" Race Edition! Yes PV was set the same on both bikes: 1-turn out from as delivered from Beta (basically PV adjuster flush with case).

    It reminds me of a design in small airplanes. They have duel ignition systems as a backup in case one system fails. It's for safety, not performance. The only advantage I see is it will get you home if you foul a spark plug. Other than that, it's just a gimmick .

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Beta claims better fuel economy and more low to mid torque...maybe we will notice a bigger difference when riding on a moto track? Gimmick or not the Beta 300RE engines run great!

  • @learningtofly6804
    @learningtofly6804 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The dual plug idea is puzzling. If a plug is so critical I am surprised there's not more talk about changing to a fresh plug more frequently or even a set number of hours noted like a piston. Also, why not build a better plug.....Anyway, enough negativity. Loading the bike on a steep hill maybe revealing? (maybe you need to visit some buddies in Colorado :). Enjoy your vids!

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Beta claims better fuel economy and more low to mid torque with dual spark plugs. With 1 or 2 spark plugs the 23/24 Beta 300RE's run clean! Colorado has some very fun off road riding areas!

  • @bcoffroadriding7001
    @bcoffroadriding7001 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Both betas sounded as crisp or even better than my TBI bikes. I would buy the 2024 for the better seat for sure, maybe have to test he dual plug in extended 1st gear tight trail scenarios where loading up is common. That may prove to be the reason Beta made that change?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Beta claims better fuel economy and more low to mid torque. I will do more 23 vs 24 300RE back to backs soon in the woods and one the moto tracks...the differences in the dual plug engine and the stiffer chassis may be more noticeable in other conditions.

    Did the 24 seem to burn cleaner as far as visual exhaust smoke? Also has it been confirmed the new radiators could go on a 23 model?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is an interesting question! My buddy George and I both thought there was a little less exhaust smoke at cold start and a little oil residue on the inside of the silencer on the dual plug engine. My understanding is the 24 radiators bolt on though the radiator cap is bigger (back to normal style) on the 24 model so would need to confirm clearance to the shroud.

      Stick to the Mx tracks in Ohio the public trail riding is very lame.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I live in central Ohio (the Columbus area) and regularly ride Briarcliff MX, Route 62MX, East Fork MX, and there are plenty of other tracks. Off road riding is available if you join some clubs and there are Enduro series and Dual sport events.

    Steering angle or turn radius from the radiator change? Maybe the terms are synonymous?

    Does the two plug bike have two coils ? Or does one ignition coil fire both plugs.

      Down to around 35F no issues. Last night went down to 12F so the Beta took a few tries to get started (including putting into 1st gear and rocking it back and forth to move the piston past TDC to help the starter get the engine moving)...once started ran fine... th-cam.com/video/lyv1Urw9R7s/w-d-xo.html

    Do you think its a gimmick or is it beneficial

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great question! The difference in this back to back was subtle - my buddy and I both thought with the extra energy of the additional spark plug going into the combustion event would make some difference in power character of the engine. The difference was subtle riding them back to back in an open area. Perhaps when we get them onto a moto track with hills or on some trails it may be more noticeable. I am sure Beta has some reasons (thermodynamics and/or emissions?) for adding an addition spark plug.
