He said that authoritarianism and individualism are two sides of the same coin and are deeply linked when individualism is inherently antithetical to that idea. It's not individualism which produced the horrors of the 20th century. It's not individualism which produced the excesses of absolute monarchy. I don't understand how he reached such a radically incorrect conclusion.
The problem is that excessive individualism, by dissolving the bonds which permit an orderly and low conflict society, can provoke a backlash which gives rise to the populist and authoritarian regimes that are possibly the major threat to liberal democracies right now.
Look at marxist leninist dictatorships of the 20th century and it's relation to customs, traditions and voluntary communities like unions, churches, boy scouts etc. traditions and customs were dissolved and communities either banned or inflitrated and reduced to the shadows of their selfs. Whatever influence these had was sliced up between the individual and the government. The individual was much more free in the sense of not having his behaviour guided by any unwritten custom and organically formed dictates of society yet without anything to protect him from the overarching government.
Authoritarians ARE the most individual of individualists, and are admired for that reason. Think Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Vladimir Putin, and everything promoted by Ayn Rand.

Both extremes are dangerous yet both must be implemented in balance too much of either produces problems
