Lorenzo de Medici is also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent. Lorenzo and his brother Giuliano were essentially the catalysts for the Renaissance in Florence, Italy during the late 15th century. They espoused Hu manist ideals, valuing peace and culture over military conquests, and injected half a billion dollars into art and culture in the late 1400s. Together, they were the joint rulers of Florence.

Sadly, the brothers were targeted in 1478 in the Pazzi Conspiracy - a conspiracy to overthrow the Medici family. Giuliano was brutally murdered outside the Florence Duomo, and Lorenzo was wounded but managed to escape.
Today we are talking about what these great men looked like. One brother was known to have strong, unpleasant features. And the other was handsome, known as “The Golden Boy.”
Lorenzo’s likeness has been very well preserved. Most of the depictions of him - including this terracotta bust - were created as copies of waxworks made from life.
According to author Giorgio Vasari, three life size wax models of Lorenzo were made by artist Andrea del Verocchio and wax specialist Orsino Benintendi. They were commissioned by Lorenzo after the failed attempt on his life - they were even dressed in Lorenzo’s own clothes, including the bandages he wore after the attack to serve as a reminder of his survival.
Author Christopher Hibbert described Lorenzo in this passage: “His long flattened nose looked broken and badly set, his jaw jutted forward and his eyebrows above his big, dark, penetrating eyes were irregular and bumpy. He was quite strikingly ugly.”
It’s believed that Lorenzo suffered from a rare condition called Acromegaly, an oversecretion of growth hormone that changes the appearance over time and enlarges the features.
Yet he was still enormously popular - with a joyful nature, an easy smile, and an animated personality. This also didn’t seem to hurt his chances with women - Italian historian Guicciardini said he was “licentious and very amorous” often going for married women.
Giuliano was also good with women. It’s rumored that he may have even been lover to Simonetta Vespucci, a renowned beauty who was painted by many renaissance artists of the time, most notably in the Birth of Venus.
The main portrait we have of Giuliano is this one by Sandro Boticelli, but it was made after his death. The lowered eyes indicate a death mask was possibly used as reference, although the original mask seems to be lost to time. The image I’ve worked from is this statue - made from life by Andrea del Verrocchio. Giuliano would have been just 21 in this image, made three years before his early death.

Wow! The way you always modernize men. They look so handsome 👍 I am sure you do a good job on women, but being a woman I would notice the features on men better.
Out of curiosity I used to come for the recreations, but now I enjoy the history lessons just as much
Same! v
Same lmao, same with tasting history, use to just skip to the recipe and taste testing, now I LOVE the history parts even more
I found Lorenzo to be the most fascinating man in history when young and nothing has changed in my 76 years
Wonderful! I went to Florence in 1983. I never wanted to leave, it is a place full of art and beauty. Lorenzo's spirit is still there. I saw many young men who resembled men shown in the paintings of Botticelli. You did a great job. In your depiction he looks a little like Deniro.
So very true ,I couldn’t say it better
You should also consider doing Simonetta Vespuci the muse of artist Sandro botecelli- she stared in many of his paintings like Venus and Mars and The birth of Venus.
She was upholded to be the most beautiful woman in italy during the Renaissance era. She was also famously theorized to be Giulios lover
Fascinating. I knew the Medicis were a powerful family, I just didn't know how they acquired their power. Although Giuliano is certainly the better looking brother by conventional standards, Lorenzo had a commanding presence and a great smile. A pity he died so young, and all that he worked for went to ruin.
@@Hadassahtexas Pretty sure they meant the bank and the family's status and influence...
I had the same thought about Lorenzo. His features are a bit harsh at first look, but the smile absolutely transformed his face. His eyes also show his intelligence and charisma, and with all this, his looks sort of grow on you. It's easy to see why, even described as the "less handsome" brother, Lorenzo still had no trouble charming the ladies.
How did it went to ruin? Visti Florence and you will see their legacy everywhere, and not just in Florence.
The Medici family lost its influence due to circumstances out of Lorenzo the Magnificent’s control
Giuliano looks like my cousin….Lorenzo would be an action movie hero today…..❤
What a sweet comment.
In his own way, Lorenzo is deeply handsome; and completely charismatic, even through a screen.
They're both very handsome, especially in the modern versions.
I get so excited when I see a new video of yours 😭😭😭
That is so nice! Thank you!
yesss
I just had the exact same thought when it popped up in my feed. My brain said Woohoo ❤
Me too!
I've always found the Medici's fascinating. Lorenzo's passion for the arts, etc, was responsible for the nurturing of Michaelangelo...the world still revels in Lorenzo's brilliance, and the stunning works of Michaelangelo.
Any chance you'll do a video on Michaelangelo Buonnaroti?
On another note, these, IMHO, are the finest recreations you've done!
Lorenzo was a great man, not many men in history put their country before their own pleasure, but he did, he made Florence a powerful place in Europe!❤
Fascinating. I never gave the Medicis a second thought, and now I know their impact on history. Thank you for this wonderful channel.
(And the segue into BEAM was quite clever. )
Thank you as always!!
We could sure do with some de Medici medicine in the world right now! "A celebration of human potential and achievement, and the importance of intellect, morality, and the arts". Exactly. Il Magnifico. What a story!
It astonishes me how your art work seems to bring actual life to the eyes and then the faces of your subjects!!!
A brilliant “portrait”in time 500+ yrs ago to prominent Medici family and the intricate ins and outs of a piece of their history. I’m guessing it’s extremely difficult to choose what exactly it is that you’re going to focus on. Brilliant job. I learned so much in 25minutes. Amazing how many of the greats were in Florence during this period. Also, the devious conduct and motives of the Catholic Church throughout history never fails to make me shiver. Andre, great fact finding and narration. Becca, a smooth transition with both Lorenzo’s and Giuliano’s portraits. Absolute perfection, both of you. ❤ RNS - brings me joy each and every time.
Thank you so much for the detailed informations about their lives. I knew Lorenzo as a patron of art but didn't know of his political skills. And thank you for bringing them back to life: looking at their smiling faces brought tears to my eyes!
Two super stars. They would be just as popular today. ❤❤
All i have really ever known about the Medici family was from reading, many years ago, Irving Stone's biographical novel The Agony and The Ecstasy about Michaelangelo Buonarroti. Even then their power was absolute.
The horrible misuse of the people and power of Pope Siso was sickening. Thank you for all the work and careful research that you put into these wonderful videos. There is nothing else to compare.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I found this fascinating. Becca you a very talented! Both Lorenzo & Giuliano were handsome especially with their beautiful smiles!
Great storytelling and recreations. It's funny but based on your recreations, I think Lorenzo is the better looking one! Giuliano is a little too pretty for my tastes, lol. Lorenzo is such an inspiration. How tragic that the world didn't really get to see what Giuliano had to offer.
Absolutely fascinating. Netflix has a three season series on the Medicis and it is excellent. A virtual history lesson. The beauty of Florence and its surrounding cities were the backdrop for the series. Very interesting to see how AI recreates what these two men might have looked like.
I watch all your videos from Italy, I'm honoured you choose Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici this time. Love your way to explain history and take it to life
Lorenzo be looking like he's ready to exile all fairy tale creatures from his kingdom and transport them to a designated resettlement facility.
Great videos. As a musician I would love to see more composer related videos. I have watched the great job you did with Mozart.
Maybe someone from the baroque or early classical period.
Vivaldi as an example.
Hi guys I found your channel a few months ago and absolutely love it and have watched almost every story, the way you tell the stories of historical figures and recreate their likeness is incredibly informative and an absolute pleasure to watch, I find nit only do I learn but truly enjoy the journeys you take me on back in time, I look forward to many more videos all the best Mary in Australia 😊
Thank you so much Mary! ❤️❤️
Gorgeous. Thank you so much for taking us back in time. Amazing ♥
You never disappoint, as usual a visually informative narrative. Thank you 😊
When you gave a hint to your next video, our guess of a Medici was correct. We just guessed it was Catherine. That was another great video and your voice is just as soothing. Also the recreations were excellent.
Wow so handsome Lorenzo. Giuliano had a sweet smile. Great work guys. I’m always in awe of your research and recreations. Amazing!!!!!
Wow! Excellent as always!
Absolutely wonderful history lesson and facial re-creations. so glad I discovered your series. Thank you so much! We owe so much to Lorenzo di Medici for the gem that is Florence and his sponsorship of a major milestone of mankind----the Renaissance.
This is one of the best educational history videos I have seen. It touched my heart and the unexpected recreations at the end were simply and incredible gift. Than you so much and congratulations for a fantastic production ❤❤❤
Omg! So excited about this one one Lorenzo de’ Medici!!! I love learning about the Medici family. Saving this one for later when I have my wine & cake!
Wine and cake!! Haha it’s that kind of night ❤️ honored you are reserving that time for us.
Catherine de Medici next!! Loved the video!
I recommend to watch the Netflix series The Medici. Although Lorenzo and Giuliano are played by really handsome actors with little resemblance to how they looked in reality, the story has a lot of truth and this documentary helps me to understand even more the complex and amazing story of Florence at that time. I was lucky to visit this beautiful city a couple of weeks ago and to see Boticelli's Venus and the Dome and to visit the Medici's home moved me beyond words.
Acromegly is caused by a pituitary tumor that over produces growth hormones. The 80's wrestler Andre the Giant had one also.
By far, one of the best chanels here on TH-cam. Thank you very much, what a great video and step in history ❤
The re-creations look great, and I have always wanted to learn more about the Medicis. Now that I have, I hope to learn even more! What a great story! Thank you!
The story was sad…I’ve watched documentaries about the Medicis…but the execution of the persons, is what really helps you to connect with the story!!!
What amazing recreations and beautifully narrated. Thank you.
Excellent, as always!
I already knew or heard about The Medici family because I played Assassin’s Creed 2. You brought back to life what they really looked like than the video game depicted. That’s was amazing recreation of their faces of the most powerful person in Florence in 15th Century
Wonderful tribute ❤
Great video as usual! I would love to see a recreation of Simonetta Vespucci in the future 😊
I’ve been sharing your work for a couple years now on my TikTok and i have been a big fan of the medici dynasty for years. I’ve been waiting for the Medici’s to make an appearance. I’m so freaking happy. Thank you ❤ they both look incredible! Excited to share this one

I love this channel.
Imagine coming from a family that could trace it's lineage through 100's of years. My mom was illigetiment and my father was stolen from a hospital. I'm 80 so things were different when dad was born. I can make up my own background.😎
I love your channel! Thank you for creating this content and taking the time to teach your audience about history in a way that’s never been done before! It’s absolutely beautiful! You have a new subscriber!
Thank you so much. Absolutely fascinating.
Incredible, as always! Andre, nice to hear your voice!

Thanks for that bit of history, I knew some of it from watching there series that was done. But this by far was a true look into the past. They were right, his brother was very handsome. Cant wait till you next look back into history past.
What a coincidence, I just started watching the Medici series on Netflix!
Fantástico!!! Adoro!!!!! 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
Your recreations are awesome! Can you do Frederick the Great
yayyy new video !!
Well now I want to see you cover and bring to life Simonetta!
Thanks!
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’d love to see Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester the favorite of Elizabeth I
I would love to see one of Catherine de Medici too
This video is wonderful! I love all the history and then the portraits blow me away! I think Lorenzo resembles Robert DeNiro.
Why are they not more important in world history? The history of art banking and wealth can be tied back to the family.
