Lorenzo de Medici is also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent. Lorenzo and his brother Giuliano were essentially the catalysts for the Renaissance in Florence, Italy during the late 15th century. They espoused Hu manist ideals, valuing peace and culture over military conquests, and injected half a billion dollars into art and culture in the late 1400s. Together, they were the joint rulers of Florence.

Sadly, the brothers were targeted in 1478 in the Pazzi Conspiracy - a conspiracy to overthrow the Medici family. Giuliano was brutally murdered outside the Florence Duomo, and Lorenzo was wounded but managed to escape.
Today we are talking about what these great men looked like. One brother was known to have strong, unpleasant features. And the other was handsome, known as “The Golden Boy.”
Lorenzo’s likeness has been very well preserved. Most of the depictions of him - including this terracotta bust - were created as copies of waxworks made from life.
According to author Giorgio Vasari, three life size wax models of Lorenzo were made by artist Andrea del Verocchio and wax specialist Orsino Benintendi. They were commissioned by Lorenzo after the failed attempt on his life - they were even dressed in Lorenzo’s own clothes, including the bandages he wore after the attack to serve as a reminder of his survival.
Author Christopher Hibbert described Lorenzo in this passage: “His long flattened nose looked broken and badly set, his jaw jutted forward and his eyebrows above his big, dark, penetrating eyes were irregular and bumpy. He was quite strikingly ugly.”
It’s believed that Lorenzo suffered from a rare condition called Acromegaly, an oversecretion of growth hormone that changes the appearance over time and enlarges the features.
Yet he was still enormously popular - with a joyful nature, an easy smile, and an animated personality. This also didn’t seem to hurt his chances with women - Italian historian Guicciardini said he was “licentious and very amorous” often going for married women.
Giuliano was also good with women. It’s rumored that he may have even been lover to Simonetta Vespucci, a renowned beauty who was painted by many renaissance artists of the time, most notably in the Birth of Venus.
The main portrait we have of Giuliano is this one by Sandro Boticelli, but it was made after his death. The lowered eyes indicate a death mask was possibly used as reference, although the original mask seems to be lost to time. The image I’ve worked from is this statue - made from life by Andrea del Verrocchio. Giuliano would have been just 21 in this image, made three years before his early death.

Wow! The way you always modernize men. They look so handsome 👍 I am sure you do a good job on women, but being a woman I would notice the features on men better.

Wonderful! I went to Florence in 1983. I never wanted to leave, it is a place full of art and beauty. Lorenzo's spirit is still there. I saw many young men who resembled men shown in the paintings of Botticelli. You did a great job. In your depiction he looks a little like Deniro.

You should also consider doing Simonetta Vespuci the muse of artist Sandro botecelli- she stared in many of his paintings like Venus and Mars and The birth of Venus.
She was upholded to be the most beautiful woman in italy during the Renaissance era. She was also famously theorized to be Giulios lover

Fascinating. I knew the Medicis were a powerful family, I just didn't know how they acquired their power. Although Giuliano is certainly the better looking brother by conventional standards, Lorenzo had a commanding presence and a great smile. A pity he died so young, and all that he worked for went to ruin.

I had the same thought about Lorenzo. His features are a bit harsh at first look, but the smile absolutely transformed his face. His eyes also show his intelligence and charisma, and with all this, his looks sort of grow on you. It's easy to see why, even described as the "less handsome" brother, Lorenzo still had no trouble charming the ladies.

I've always found the Medici's fascinating. Lorenzo's passion for the arts, etc, was responsible for the nurturing of Michaelangelo...the world still revels in Lorenzo's brilliance, and the stunning works of Michaelangelo.
Any chance you'll do a video on Michaelangelo Buonnaroti?
On another note, these, IMHO, are the finest recreations you've done!

A brilliant “portrait”in time 500+ yrs ago to prominent Medici family and the intricate ins and outs of a piece of their history. I’m guessing it’s extremely difficult to choose what exactly it is that you’re going to focus on. Brilliant job. I learned so much in 25minutes. Amazing how many of the greats were in Florence during this period. Also, the devious conduct and motives of the Catholic Church throughout history never fails to make me shiver. Andre, great fact finding and narration. Becca, a smooth transition with both Lorenzo’s and Giuliano’s portraits. Absolute perfection, both of you. ❤ RNS - brings me joy each and every time.

All i have really ever known about the Medici family was from reading, many years ago, Irving Stone's biographical novel The Agony and The Ecstasy about Michaelangelo Buonarroti. Even then their power was absolute.
The horrible misuse of the people and power of Pope Siso was sickening. Thank you for all the work and careful research that you put into these wonderful videos. There is nothing else to compare.

I recommend to watch the Netflix series The Medici. Although Lorenzo and Giuliano are played by really handsome actors with little resemblance to how they looked in reality, the story has a lot of truth and this documentary helps me to understand even more the complex and amazing story of Florence at that time. I was lucky to visit this beautiful city a couple of weeks ago and to see Boticelli's Venus and the Dome and to visit the Medici's home moved me beyond words.
