      @Professional-fh1ow ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@48northphotography5 That's interesting because Don & Billy White (phenom guitarist) wrote most of the songs. None of the songs reminded me of a Dokken tune except Mirror Mirror with its two finger plucking like Its Not Love. The only song that had any Dokken member contribution was Stay w/ Mick Brown. Maybe he said it in spite of Lynch. I was a student of this album. I played in a band at the time and had learned many of the songs because I liked the album so much.

Dokken at their core are not a “Glam/Hair Metal” band. They really only had a glam image for one tour and album and that was for “Under Lock and Key” 1985-1986
They were a melodic hard rock/metal band that had substance and sincerity with their all their songs, not just the typical sex, drugs and rock and roll. I think the band’s best material lyrically and thematically came with Back for the Attack and Up From the Ashes (The latter which was originally scheduled to be a Dokken album, but legal issues prevented that from happening). Had that album been released as a Dokken album it probably would’ve gone double platinum.
Having said that, the band has sold over 10 million albums world wide, received a Grammy nomination, had a movie tie in and had their share of top 20 and 40 success.
They could’ve been bigger, but I think it was because of their reticence to do the typical Glam stuff like Poison and Motley Crüe that probably put them in the middle ground. Ultimately Dokken’s music holds up better than a majority of the bands of that period because of that Difference.

Dokken is not "glam" my man, but a band like Poison is "glam", as there is a huge difference in the style, musicianship and song writing!! Dokken is just a Awesome heavy, hard rock band who was there rocking before any of the silly labels were thought up. If Dokken is "glam", they you would also have to label Van Halen as glam, and they're far from it!! Thank goodness I was there when all these great bands and this great music came out, and saw it all live!!

Awesome Band!! One of the best, with a perfect balance/mix of heavy, hard rock power chords and melodic, classy, talent laden chops all blended together to make some of the best music ever!! Every member is top class in their skills! Yes I agree that Shadowlife was a shitty album (but that was due to internal sabotage by all involved...couldn't they all just get along...LOL!). I'd say since the classic 80's fare, Erase the Slate and Lightning Strikes Again, are easily the best albums they've had... fave 5 songs... Burning Like A Flame, Kiss Of Death, Back For The Attack, Just Got Lucky & Unchain The Night but there are so many more... Just get into it if you love to Rock!!!

George Lynch, Randy Rhoads, Uli Jon Roth and Eddy van Halen are the Big Four in guitar-playing these days.
They created a completely new approach, a new way to let the guitar sounding.
Dokken`s "Into the fire" is one of the Dokken songs that can compete to the great Van Halen stuff. What to say about Randy? Listen to the first two Ozzy albums! Nothing that came later from Ozzy is on that level. "Sails of Charon" by the Scorpions (better: by Uli Jon Roth) is a Malmsteen song before Malmsteen hit the limelight.
Dokken/Lynch? One of the most underrated musical talents in Rock-History. Ozzy and van Halen also had their "Hair Metal" time. It was just an outfit thing, no musical caregory for these bands.

GNR and Def Leppard aren’t glam metal. DL were NWBHM and GNR are so different than the other Glam and Hair bands, unfortunately in the 80s if you played heavy rock your label glammed you up. When I think early glam I think Quiet Riot, Ratt, and Motley Crue. I realize by the Hysteria album Def Leppard looked and sounded a little like a glam band but I just can’t get behind GNR DL being glam, Cinderella isn’t glam either but most casual fans just assume that they are and it’s a shame because they have some cool music. I’ve never gotten into Dokken besides the big MTV videos It’s Not Love is probably my favorite Dokken song. I’m going to have to check out some more Dokken, you might just be on to something, GL is definitely an incredible guitarist and Don a great songwriter, I think the reason I’ve never gotten into them is because I just don’t care for the mix/mastering/production of their albums, I know what they were going for but I don’t know if it was a money problem or personnel but Dokken always sounded like their newest albums were two or three years behind the bands production wise. You can have the best songs ever, but if the mix sucks it’ll never be a big hit. That’s just what I can come to as to why I never got into them, I started playing guitar in the 90s and remember seeing George Lynch in the magazines and thinking the guy looks cool and has some sweet ESP guitars and then being underwhelmed with the music.

@@billymuellerTikTok they did nick Phil from girl, but I still don’t consider them glam but they definitely become more pop on Pyromania and Hysteria, I love both of those albums, but after Steve Clark died I haven’t cared for any of their new material. I’m weird though the first Skid Row was glam and then Slave to the Grind sounds kinda like the missing link between glam and grunge. From the footage I’ve seen the most glam band on the tour this summer sounded the best I was way more impressed with the Poison footage than I ever thought I’d be.

Fun fact: Dokken's live album Beast from the East is not only one of the best live albums in the genre, but also received two of the greatest honours an album can get: not only did it get a 1-star review from Rolling Stone, which famously hated metal more the better it was, but Chris Cornell also tried to gaslight them out of a Grammy nomination by referring to how Jetro Tull got a Grammy for best heavy metal act, and implied that Dokken's inclusion meant that the nominators still didn't understand what heavy metal was. This is pretty rich, not only coming from Cornell, but talking about a band that had cut their teeth playing with Dio and had Metallica open for them on their last tour before their original breakup.

Dokken was great and musically stands the test of time. I'm 52 and can say that I loved them back in the day. The problem with them was Don Dokken had zero charisma as a frontman which was so crucial to the success of a band in that Era. The songs were there but Don was not as pretty and charismatic frontman as was needed during that era. The antithesis of Dokken is Ratt. Stephen Pearcy sucked as a singer but just oozes that special something that propelled that band higher than his musical talent.

I had a conversation with Don on his board, and the record company suppressed Dokken to be more grunge, that's a fact, killing the songs that rocked. Don Dokken's CD is timeless, that and Lynch Mob charted well, showing that there is still a market for hard rock. The original line-up had the best song writers. Now with John, eh, John needs to work on it, he can't write at the same level as the original line up.

Yeah, I'm just happy I got to see them live twice (Dysfunctional Tour and also Erase the Slate era). Don still had his voice back then, great shows. But I was only there for hearing the old songs, had no interest in anything after Back for the Attack....as I recall only a handful of "new" songs were played at those shows.

Dokken's troubles came not from infighting between Don Dokken and George Lynch, but because Don always considered the other guys as hired hands and only gave them a small percentage of the rewards they earned. They all had finally had enough and told Don to kiss their a$$e$ and went on to other projects, most notably Lynch Mob. I'm glad younger people are finding Dokken and getting into their older stuff. They were a great guitar based hard rock/metal band and they have many great hits, unlike many of their peers with only a few hits over many albums. Dokken and RATT were kings of the hill for a while in the mid to late 80s. Rock on!!

Oh just must say being a 90s teenager i am a fan of grung as well but if truth be told grung really only had 4 good bands 90s alternative metal is some of my favorite music clutch kyuss white zombie ministry gwar machine head helmet biohazard prong then the rise of nu metal and just to big to list but 90s metal was killer

The only reason why Dokken wasn’t bigger is because Don wasn’t as cute and didn’t have the stage presence like some of the lesser talented bands from the same time, he was boring then, and even more boring now! But he wrote some great songs, and Dokken remains one of my top 5 best 80s bands of all time

If wasn't for the fight with gorge and don they would of been glam royalty i loved dokken so close to exploding but as much as i love lynch for guitar but his ego destroyed there legacy they really should be talked about like ac/ dc are gnr they were just as good but heavier with one of the greatest singer's of the 80s and one of the top 3 guitarist from the 70s its not widely known but gorge lynch randy roads and Eddie were all in the same scene playing small shows and competing for the guitar legend crown we all know who won that i personally favor randy out of all of them but Eddie is fucking Eddie the king and gorge takes a very very respectful 3rd i said very 2 times because just to be in the same league as the other 2 is legendary and he was

To bad Goethe couldn't get along with Don, while he has great chops he never had the song writing chops, of other guitarist that he may have been technically better then.

I'm a massive Dokken fan and I always will be. I don't like calling Dokken a hair band. They are a just prettier than your average metal band. They had one of the greatest guitar players ever with Mr. Scary himself George Lynch. The original 4 albums are the best with Dysfunctional and Hell to Pay being the best of the rest. Every album has at least one good song on it and most have more than half (Damn Shadow Life ruined that stat with only one decent song). They rock their ass off every time I've seen them which started in the late 80's (I'm 52). IMO Dokken never made it as a massive band like Motley Crue, Ratt, or Poison was because in Jeff Pilson's own words their videos were steaming pile of SH!!!T. They had crappy videos minus It's not Love. Great songs need great videos and that just didn't happen with Dokken. I still love them and crank it up every time I play them or hear them on Hair Nation.

Have to really quick referring to these bands as hair bands... nobody called them hair bands in the '80s.. it was all considered different levels of metal.. when you referred to them as hair bands it makes it seem as if they are inferior.. it's not inferior it's just a different decade it's Hard Rock.. there really only a few mainstream true and true bands that were glam metal or hair metal.. in both image and sound poison is one of those bands but most bands that people in retrospect refer to as hair bands or Glam bands we're not really hair bands unless you want to call Van Halen a hair band and nobody calls Van Halen a hair band.. very hard rock band classic rock band... you and call Led Zeppelin a hair band would you? You wouldn't call Aerosmith a hair band would you?

    • @kospandx

Dokkan is great but there's no speed metal element in any of their songs. You need to really know what genres you're talking about before making statements like that. I'm not trying to sound like a dick or anything, I'm just stating facts.
