You're right! Johnny wrongly assumed that Letterman would take his place when he retired. When all that crud started, Dave flew out to talk with Johnny about what he should do. Carson told him not to let NBC do that to him and take the CBS offer. When Dave started on CBS, Carson would send him jokes. Letterman told the jokes, but at the time, no one knew that Carson was sending some jokes. He was really pleased with Letterman. Johnny did love Dave like a son, and he had such respect for him and vice versa.
@Harrison Ford will kill someone with his plane That is total BS! Letterman was awesome all the way through May 20, 2015. Even on a bad night, he was ten times better than the clowns doing late night today.
I watch these whenever they “pop up”. As a child in the 60s and 70s….the references are spot on! And Lorraine’s response to what Sandy Duncan was really like? OMG….I LOLed for 10 minutes!
Dave was so darn funny! Naturally quick witted, ...the stuff he came up with off the top of his head, amazing. What a great clip. I think Johnny saw and really admired his talent.
Not always clean, but always funny and entertaining! So much more than what the TV networks are offering up today. When Johnny Carson retired, that was the beginning of the end of late night television. When Dave retired, I switched to Gin!
iconoclast My politics and comedic interests are totally separate. I am unbiased when it comes to comedy, I can enjoy jokes that make fun of the left and democrats, unlike you who can only enjoy jokes if they are in your political interest. Who looks like the intelligent one out of these two categories then?
My favorite visit of his to the Tonight Show was the one where he flew out on the first of the big name discount airlines, Laker Airways, which he described as being for people who couldn’t afford to take the bus, and where everything you did in the lavatory was a bank shot.
Back when he still wore light colored jackets. I absolutely love him in one too, especially with real shoes on LOL and the shaggy curly hair and the sun tan. He went through so many subtle style changes. This one his eyebrows look lighter than his skin haha.
This isn't a comment on the video, but on the name of the channel. "Napkin Botany" is one of the strangest non-sequitur phrases I've ever read. I love it!
"Thank you very much." "How are you?" "Nice to see ya'." ...David walks on to Johnny's set as a guest but speaks like he's the host! He says the same things he says on his own show to his own guests... I guess once you're a host you can't act any other way, lol.
Dave's right about how safe it is to fly. Where it breaks down, statistically, is if there's an accident. I try to avoid either, but I'd rather be involved in a car crash than an airplane crash.
Can see why Johnny liked Dave and not Leno. Leno didn't engage like that in real conversation. Instead, he rocked back and forth and slapped his hands together - a weak substitute for intelligent conversation.
I was forced to share this on Facebook along with the following introduction: "THAT'S THE THING YA KNOW... IT'S LIKE... ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER and before ya know it, you're watching a grown man, dressed in Velcro, jump on a trampoline and stick to the counter part of that Velcro, which is covering a wall... Now why would anyone do that? I mean, ya gotta ask yourself... right? That is to say, why would you stick around, (no pun intended) long enough to see that? Still, for your own well being and peace of mind; I highly suggest you do, because, you could very-well prove a bit of Holy Scripture by doing so... (Proverbs 17:22) Seriously!"

I remember trying to watch Dave’s morning show during the summer of 1980 while I was in Corpus Christi but the NBC affiliate KRIS wasn’t showing it. I was 10 years old staying at my aunts house. I was flipping the dial and I caught an out of town signal on channel 12, real fuzzy but I could tell what show it was. I don’t know how I knew about David Letterman but I was also watching the night of the first Late Night
Omg my dad has that same suit n tie DL Is wearing still In his closet 🥴😳😳 after all these yrs.... He jus refuses to buy new ones!! and keeps the old ones.... fermenting in his closet
Bad... but Dave can get away with it... because he has the perfect reaction to his own less-successful efforts. It blends into the whole performance. I can’t think of many others who could of played that off as well as he did.
Growing up in my days nobody, and I mean nobody was off limits. So that meant you had 3 options: 1 learned to give as good as you got. 2 laugh it off and ignore it 3 get angry, show your emotions and because of that better run away because the teasing would turn even louder and worse. Personally I went for number 2. As I got older I realized that kids can be really cruel because to a point they don't know better, but after certain age one has to considered more carefully what is funny and what is simply cruel not just to you but for the other person.
@@rustymertz that is because you never wore a 2500 Armani suit from the 80's and 90's. Suits today are none functional. One of the best dressed guys in Steve Harvey. His tailor is the balls.
I still remember this velcro stunt when it was live. I loved both Johnny Carson and David Letterman shows!
Johnny loved Dave and they always had great chemistry together. Spent 40 incredible years watching these two legends.

I thought Carson was a much better host...never liked the way Letterman always tried to upstage and clown his guests
Glad to see my two favorite late night hosts getting along so well!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Letterman was always so self deprecating even when he was killing it. That was something I always liked about him. Hilarious!
now he's an old liberal asshole
Shin Igami He lost it and turned into an arrogant liberal
I think we found 2 of the 20 assholes giving this amazing video thumbs down.
This is when he was funny. Then he turned into the liberal asshole that turned half the country off.
@@livejay9062 it's funny that he is a liberal asshole but they're fine with a traitorous liar undermining their country.

Carson at 11:30pm and Letterman at 12:30am. You will never have two must see shows back to back like that again!
I hope and pray there’s a place in heaven and Carson as got the tonight show 😢 god bless him and he’s missed so bad and long may David live 💚
Dave was so darn funny! Naturally quick witted, ...the stuff he came up with off the top of his head, amazing. What a great clip. I think Johnny saw and really admired his talent.
Did you miss the earthquake bowling joke? Carson said Leonard Nimoy was in search of a laugh.
"Hi Ed," a perfect master stroke. The death stroke, the killing joke. Seriously, perfect timing
Reminded me of Charles Nelson Reilly, who would also turn and say hell to Ed or whoever the previous guest was with the same timing and cadence.
I used to watch both of these gentlemen in the eighties. Great “clean” comedy. Two legends of late night t.v! Wonderful chemistry!

“In my house, I can’t relax. I’ve got a dog, he drives me nuts. We call him Egypt, every room he leaves a pyramid.”
Despite all the rumors they were great friends and had admirable respect for each other....
What rumors? I've always seen them being describred as good friends.

Just like seeing old friends.
They had the weirdest drawings when they went to commercials, like Picasso on acid.
Yong Yu More like Monty Python drawings
I believe often the pictures were drawn my Johnny’s late son

"This is my wave, baby. Don't cut me off..."
he must love watching these again.
James Hampton was part of the Mary Tyler Moore variety show as well.
Dead porn star s
His remark about how hot it was was the reason why he kept it so cold in the Ed Sullivan theater.
How DID he get down from the wall?? 😂😂💥
As a fat person, I agree with his "test"
Are your parts still moving?
"Send Leonard Nimoy in search of a laugh", gold!
Dave was 37; the house in Malibu was really his girlfriend's house and Merrill Markoe still lives there..
Letterman didn't mention that he was a weatherman in Indiana, way back when.
Damond Cutter, he mentioned it at a diffderent time..
He also did racing commentary from Indianapolis for ABC when they had the 500 there each year. Totally different persona when he was serious.
Havnt watched a late night show since Carson
Dave's right about how safe it is to fly. Where it breaks down, statistically, is if there's an accident. I try to avoid either, but I'd rather be involved in a car crash than an airplane crash.
Genius
Dave a few years before the beard.
Two Masters
If David Letterman was a person of smaller stature he would be an oompa loompa. Never saw it until now.

Loved Carson so much. He was awesome as a straight man to comics he had as guests.

Fred Flintstone respects traditional family values. He has a gay o time with his wife Willlllllllllllma.

He would make fun of someone who wore one.
Dave’s great. But Jhonny was the best.
Unfortunately this episode wasn’t as funny as I thought it might be🤷 I was never a fan of the Letterman show. But obviously the rest of the world was😐

Dave could have done the Seinfeld show better than Jerry 🎭
Pretty sure Jerry was the least essential part of Seinfeld.
