Hobi won a Korean national championship for his dancing in 2008 and he has always been considered among the very best dancers in the industry.
His choice was between being an acclaimed dancer and being an idol, where he had some serious obstacles to overcome. He doesn’t conform to the (ridiculous) so-called ‘Korean Beauty Standard’, he wasn’t a singer, and initially he wasn’t a rapper. Even when he started rapping he was standing next to two world-class rappers, which must have been incredibly daunting. He could have opted out but he didn’t… and boy do we have to be thankful for that!
The way I see it is that dance is what binds them in performance - their rhythm and timing, their cohesiveness comes from the way they move together, at least as much as it does from the way the music is written. Hobi is integral to that, he is the heart of Bangtan and his role in making BTS is at least as important as that of Son Sungdeuk, their choreographer and performance director.
Hobi pours his heart/soul in dancing, and the beauty of his movement became an iconic on his own style. Very impressive and including his marvellous RAPPING. Ahh miss him. 💜💜💜

You will listen to this song, and the whole MOTS7 album differently when you realise it was meant to be their last album (and tour) before taking their long planned break for solo projects.
Covid threw their plans into disarray and they decided to postpone their "time out" in order to release songs that would comfort Army during the worst of the pandemic.
I love them for that but it also makes me sad that they had to sacrifice so much.

I just deeply related to you when you stopped in the middle to say “gosh I love BTs and their lyrics” and talk about how much they share about their fears etc. this song about the Ego could go so many ways and as a capstone to the whole Map of the Soul duet of albums it’s just brilliant and I smile like crazy. It’s almost unfair that BTS has 7 such insane talented guys who complement and also work solo so well. They’ve encouraged each other’s talents and it shows. This song is pure perseverance of who they are fears and joy. Also BTs will never miss a chance to rush the stage to perform with each other it’s adorable how much they love each other’s music.
If you listen to the intros from their first 3 albums (school trilogy) they were sampled and used for Intro, Interlude and Outro on Map of the Soul 7. You know BTS, they love these little connections.!💜
You know when I first heard the song title EGO, I kinda mayhaps have avoided it until I was in the mood for sombre music cuz the title ego didn't exactly bring +ve vibes to mind at that time. 🤦🏻♀️ 🤦🏻♀️ Smh
After I heard it tho. I sat in shock for about five minutes. 😂😂 You should have seen my face lol. I looked like someone who had reached enlightenment.
Then I started thinking. Ego was never a negative word, why did I think it was? 👀It's what makes us us. Our identity, our ego.
💜Bts has changed so many meanings of simple words for me. A few examples would be love, ego, respect, dreams and sorrow too. I love when music does that to me. Changes the way u think or give a perspective. 😁💜
Also, may I mention how Jhope was the PERFECT PERSON FOR THIS SONG. ahem. sorry for screaming, jhope probably has the strongest identity among all of them. Like, I can't kinda completely explain it but a very adult vibe like he KNOWS WHO HE IS?!? Like that. Thank u for coming to my Tedtalk
I love all the comments on here. I wanted to say many of the same things. I enjoyed watching your journey thru the Map, also wanted to know how you felt after the album. Hoseok the regular person has his persona (JHope), his shadows (what if he didn't join BTS), and found his Ego his true dancing performing self. He is the best person to write this song because it's a difficult topic yet he encapsulated it in an upbeat manner. Only Hobi can do that. Changed the meaning of Ego from self-centered definition most people associate to Jung's meaning of SELF. What's the need of questioning the past and doubting yourself when you can just look to yourself and BE who you are and do what you love? My favorite part of this reaction is when you said usually you share fears with people they trust. BTS trusts ARMY. They may share with the world but do they listen? Their loss really. Like you said, when Hobi smiles you can't help but smile too 🙂

Some tough tiring days I use to hear this song and Ego, after work. 😁
I’ve been waiting for you to finally reach ego! Isn’t it great?! Very few songs give me as much instant energy and self-assured happiness as this song does. The beginning of “we are now going to progress to steps that are a bit more difficult” also has a great double meaning to me: one, because it’s the first thing we hear in their very first 2013 album, and also because reaching the Ego and embracing yourself fully in this way probably is the most difficult part of this journey we’ve been on.
I think they divided persona, shadow and ego up perfectly between the rappers. To me, j-hope comes across as (of all 7 members) the one who’s most comfortable in his own skin and body. Maybe because of his street dance roots? He carries such a genuine coolness and self-acceptance, his whole vibe just screams self-knowledge, competence, self-confidence, authentic integrity to me. Like what the word “cool” should actually mean. Of course this could all be part of his j-hope persona, and I know he has many fears and insecurities, but he gives off a really settled, adult, non-awkward vibe to me. (If that makes sense? Point of this comment is basically just: I love Hoseok and think he was the perfect person to write and sing this song xD) Glad you enjoyed this album!

"We are now going to progress to some steps which are a bit more difficult" This audio has always reminded me of the instructions for the pacer test. Every time I hear it, I think that is very appropriate for BTS who have been constantly running since the beginning. "This is a capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues". I think that sums up their career perfectly.

The giving up thing might be referring to when J-Hope quit BTS back in the beginning. RM talked him into coming back, and talked the company into taking him back, by saying that Hobi was needed and essential to BTS. Which it turns out he was. Jungkook has also talked about how much he cried when J-Hope left the group.

And just to help you not forgetting.... In korean "eo" is the romanisation for a letter that sounds like "O". So seokjin is read "sok-jin", and hoseok is read "ho-sok". Similarly Seoul is not "si-ol"... It's "so-ul".

What's not to like about Ego? The foot-stomping beat and that brass riff blow away the blues. As you say, Bryan, you can't help but smile when Hobi smiles. But, Hobi is a study in contrasts. Profound lyrics undergird this upbeat melody. Thank you for drawing attention to that.

Hobi has always been my bias and Yoongi is my bias wrecker.. There's things that only Hobi can do, like change the meaning of words, thru the lyrics of a song..Army trusts BTS and BTS trusts Army.. Everyone in the comments already said what I would like to say abt Hobi. 😂 So I just want to add my exp w/ this song. It's normal for us to not digest everything at the first listen of the entire album, right?, For me during MOTS 7 drop, at most 5 songs stuck to me from the 15 new songs (On, Black Swan, Shadow, Zero O'clock, & Moon) at the early stage. Ego is one of those who hit me later and even WAB:E was late for me too. Just to clarify, just because it hit me late it's not as impactful as others, my brain and heart can't absorb everything in one go (also I think psych needs/mental state also plays in that aspect) 😅. When comeback settles down, I can now relisten and enjoy the songs at my own normal pace and my mind is not cramped w/ thoughts anymore. So here comes Ego who just one day hit me like a ray of Sun, it passed by on my playlists, and I vibed so much to it, it's so uplifting and gave me so much joy (perhaps it's something I needed that time). So I immersed myself to the song again, carefully listening and understanding the lyrics again, and then for a couple of weeks it has been on constant repeat coz it brightens my day so much.
I always have these moments when I rediscover older BTS songs, and then I'll become addicted to it for a period of time. Recently, I had this w/ "Wake Up". Time and time again, it always make me realize that BTS Discography is god tier.

When you react to the Lollapalooza performance, could you please react to the whole performance? He did all the songs on Jack In The Box, Hope World, he also did some solo BTS songs like Trivia: Just Dance, and Outro: EGO, Dynamite tropical remix - Hobi's dance version, and Chicken Noodle Soup with Becky G, she showed up and performed with him. The ARMY "Enjoy BTS More" subtitled the whole performance with commentary, in two parts. I will link it for you again. I've done it in a few comments of previous videos. I'm just making sure you see it, because the Bangtantv version doesn't have subtitles. Thank you 💜
