What a great closing line!!! Loyalty, bravery, and heroism are things we should all strive for. Whether he is remembered as an enemy or a friend, that is very, very true, and it must be said of many of our contemporary enemies.
On another matter, the physiology teacher (and unabashed nerd) in me would like to point out that the heart will beat outside the body, yes, but not for a half hour. It can only beat as long as it has a supply of oxygen (unavailable without circulating blood) or anaerobic fuel, such as ATP (used in seconds) or glycogen (used in minutes), as well as a supply of calcium and water. The heart tissue will be dying steadily, with complete cardiac death in just a few minutes. (We had a video no one uses anymore at my university of a dog heart demonstrating this.) And he wouldn't have been brain dead, just unconscious. Anyone who has studied te judo techniques of shime waza knows this phenomenon.

My father married a Scottish lady. Her family are some of the best people I've ever met in my life. Cheers to the Scottish...And now after seeing this I have the "rest of the story". What a brave hero and great warrior. Rough times, no doubt. Brutal times. He very likely died a brave death and never went back on his claims. No man is perfect but God knows this, read the bible.

I think Wallace had to of been apart of the nobility, or at least his father or grandfather, because if indeed he was over 6'5" in a time when grown men averaged 5'0" across the Isles the only people of height were the rich nobles, barons, etc because they had greater nutrition generationally than the peasantry.
This is why Edward the First was himself 6'2" and this is why Edward IV (War of the Roses) was 6'4" bare foot and 6'7" in full armor. The alleged sword of Wallace was 5'4" in length, meaning that a man between 6'5"-6'7" would have been able to wield it.
People did not get that big naturally I those times unless you were having good and plenty, or you had pituitary gigantism. The latter I don't consider to be a good idea to consider because such a diagnosis in such a medically deprived world would have meant nearly instant death because the body is so focused on growing that the immune system is practically non-existent. After all, Robert Wadlow died from a BLISTER on his ankle.
So no, Wallace if indeed he was a large powerful man as the legends say would have been someone of nobility at least in a genetic sense.

exactly. The kids of 1980's who drank cows Milk & meats riddled with Growth Hormones created the more recent change of exceptional growth- into the large breasted & tall bodies we see in young adults to 42 yr old today. Being protective of my 3 kids health they didn't eat any growth hormones shit & grew up healthier than most with a vital immune system as a result of 8yrs of dedicating 8yrs of life.

Why is it deemed unlikely that a young man had a girlfriend, and killed the local sheriff over a romantic rivalry? That sequence of events isn't implausible, local lords were pretty famous in the day for taking their pick of peasant girls. The unusual events are those that are unquestioned; a local youth retaliating successfully.

And after The Bruce won Alba's freedom every Clan leader thought he should be King. The Scotts were so busy stabbing each other in the back that the English came back and murdered the Scottish Highlanders . So all of that violence was a waste of time.
Conquests, no matter who does it is absolutly wrong. A acquaintance of mine once told me that the bigger the crowed the stupider it is. I believe he is right. Because
on a individual level we all know that robbery and murder are wrong. Yet as countries robbing other country's is ok because its done on a national level.

  • @widdershiznit

In his intro, he was somberly describing a murder. I thought he was going to talk about the murder of William Wallace, but no. He was talking about the murder of a sheriff who had been hacking to death unofficial members of the community. The difference was that he was doing so in the name of the king, so they were sanctioned murders. Then William Wallace was captured, tortured, and hacked do death after he was murdered (I know, I know...hush. I'm making a point) by the king. Truth is they were all hacking each other to death. Hey, everyone was doing it. Such a sad event, the sheriff's murder. They were all animals.

Well, you're missing how to spell "Scots" for a start.
Edward 1's mother was Eleanor of Provence. Provence is not in England. She caused resentment -indeed riots- by the large number of "Savoyards" she brought to court. The rioters were anti-immigrant forerunners of UKIP and the BNP.
What's "100% English" anyway? Such as expression betrays a profound ignorance of the history of England.

They've apparently adopted the attitude that people will fall for anything these days - no holds barred. There are no limits to the BS that they will put on the news and tell people just to make them believe in a distant enemy that needs to be fought at all costs. Every generation has their Boogey-Man. They have to justify all that expenditure on the military/wars to the taxpayer who's paying for it all. And most DO fall for it all. It boggles the mind.

no, there were only 4 produced. If you like that style with Tony Robinson I recommend "Tony Robinson's Walking Through History" *currently running on BBC) and "Time Team" (running for years on BBC ...so there should be ample of episodes ;-) )
"Walking Through History" I suppose is based upon this mini-series...

Braveheart...a fiction? No way, man! After all, according to my history mentor, Earl Warren and his assistant, Gerald Ford, Mel Gibson portrayed the absolute irrefutable truth when it came to his Mad Max movies and Braveheart. I mean, the historic reality of Australia as we all know from Mad Max is not subject to dispute...and hence, nor is Braveheart!

Wait... Battle of Falkirk... we don't know where it happened, but we are sure that Wallace lost 10,000 men there?
So where are the bodies? It's not as if no one's looked. We know where Falkirk is, and that would be an incredible number of casualties for any battle in history.
Yet we question whether Wallace might have at one point had a girlfriend and killed a sheriff?

Heh. If the Wallis fam had moved from Wales to Scotland, it may have been to get away from the English in the first place. If so, that's the kind of story that gets passed from generation to generation. I'd imagine Wallis wouldn't have been thrilled that England was now in charge of Scotland.

    • @damienvalentine5043

Quite apart from the question of whether those walls did in fact "work"... Medieval Scotland had neither the funds to pay for such a wall, nor the organizational capacity to construct it, nor the manpower to guard and maintain it, nor -- most importantly -- the unity to agree whose noble estates it would cut across.

Oh c'mon Tony, you're better than this. Most of this version of his story is from Blind Harry who was writing the story to create a nationalist folk hero during another period of war 200 years after Wallace died. The love story was added even later than that. Pretty poor really.

Common sense is all the evidence one needs to know this to be false. It was logistically impossible to field an army of that size in that area at that time. The obvious reason is to conflate the difficulties encountered by Wallace in defeating the English by grossly inflating their numbers.

Does anybody know when & why Wallace began to be called "Braveheart"? I heard a long time ago that the Victorians made a mistake & started calling William Wallace "Braveheart" instead of Robert the Bruce, but I don't know if that is correct. Surely Mel Gibson isn't responsible for that too, is he?
