TN medical provider here: at one of the hospitals where I work, a surgeon deliberately altered the CPT codes for a proposed surgery to disguise the actual gender-affirming procedure and provide a path for insurance approval that may not have occurred otherwise. That event, and others like it, prompted an investigation into medical insurance fraud by the State's AG. The controversy around GA surgeries exists because of the complex interplay between medical efficacy, parental rights and the absence of definitive and long-term safety. It is further complicated by the fact that multiple health organizations see lots of potential profit in offering this form of care, and are rushing too quickly to beat their regional competitors in establishing an "expert center". IMO, that represents a significant conflict of interest, especially when additional pressures are placed by organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics that seems to be pushing more GA surgeries based on political ideology rather than long-term, established medical science.
What political ideology? I hear people throwing around "woke", but what does that mean in the context of medicine? Are there more effective treatments for gender dysphoria? (I'm asking YOU because I appreciate your thoughtful comment.)
There should be a public broadcast announcement about reporting instances such as yours...like in the old days in NYC that used to appear on TV that asks simply..."Do You Know Where Your Kids Are?"
@@GigglingEnigma 😂 ironically no... My parents told me to come home for dinner. I rode my bike anywhere I wanted. In the days of old TV almost nobody "knows where their kids are"
@@so_very_charlotteOver 95% of children with supposed gender dysphoria desist on their own. The solution is simply to stop gaslighting them into thinking that their problems are from being born in the wrong body.
The whole premise of this "care" is faulty. Children do not have the mental capacity for such life altering procedures. That's why we don't allow 8 year olds to drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes. Want to mutilate your body and take drugs as an adult? Fine. Leave children ALONE already.
I have a master degree in counseling, and worked in a hospital doing commitments. I strongly disagree with the attorney! Gender affirming care is not decreasing suicide. If there are suicidal issues they have to be dealt with in counseling before gender affirming care is provided. De-transition patient are advising that they were rushed to quickly through the process, and mental health care was not properly provided. If it had been they would not have transitioned. Transitioning actually increases their thoughts of suicide.
I have no medical experience but just from my own experience with medical issues I knew that whole thing was BS. You don’t feel better when they’re messing with your hormones or after surgery. Surgery especially was very traumatic. It’s just common sense but they try to lie to us and tell us the sky is green
Studies consistently show that gender-affirming hormone therapy (HRT) and other aspects of gender-affirming care significantly reduce rates of depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts among transgender individuals. A large-scale study from The Trevor Project found that transgender and nonbinary youth who received gender-affirming hormone therapy had 40% lower odds of depression, and past-year suicide attempts compared to those who wanted but could not access this care. Support from at least one parent further improved outcomes. Research published by the Williams Institute indicates that transgender individuals who receive necessary gender-affirming care have substantially lower suicide attempt rates (5.1%) compared to those unable to access care (8.5%). This finding applies across various demographics, highlighting the role of access to care in mitigating harm. A study in JAMA Network Open followed transgender youth aged 13-20 over 12 months and found that those receiving gender-affirming hormones or puberty blockers had a 60% reduction in depression and a 73% reduction in suicidal ideation or self-harm. These studies collectively underline that timely and supportive gender-affirming care, including HRT, is not only effective in treating gender dysphoria but also a critical factor in reducing suicide risk and improving overall mental health among transgender individuals.
The issue of being susceptible to deception needs much more attention. If someone like Karen Carpenter could look in the mirror and think she needed to lose more weight while starving herself to death, isn't it also possible that believing your body doesn't match your sexual identity is also a deception? After spending my career teaching children in middle school, I firmly contend that they are very vulnerable to two conflicting influences. In one way they have a need to create an individual identity, while also needing that identity to be acceptable to their peers. As we mature, our need for that level of acceptance decreases.
I have a question on 'consent'. Let's assume, for the sake of their argument, that this surgery is urgent, necessary, and life saving. Does that mean parents and doctors can simply force minors into this? Most states allow parents and doctors to perform procedures against the will of a minor, depending upon their age. If an eight-year-old is bitten by a rattlesnake as is about to die, yet they refuse an anti-toxin because they are afraid of needles, of course, the doctors/parents are going to give it to them anyway. Likewise in most states, until their teens minors can't refuse any type urgent or life saving surgery. Even young teens would probably be saved certainly if their parents agreed. So... if this is urgent, necessary, and life saving... what is stopping a doctor and parents from requiring a minor child to undergo this? Yet, I don't hear to pro-side trying to say these procedures can be given to a child involuntarily? For some reason it's urgent and necessary, yet a younger minor would need to consent to it?
The simplest solution or tradeoff is to squash these "mutilations" of the English language or to challenge the terms themselves outright because the people have self-interests good or bad that need to be held to account for their usage of terms

Just gonna leave this right here to see the hypocrisy in pharmaceutical money making abilities. No, a minor cannot be officially diagnosed with psychopathy according to the current medical standards, as it is considered a personality disorder that can only be diagnosed in adults due to the ongoing development of a child's brain and the difficulty in accurately assessing psychopathic traits at a young age; instead, behaviors that might indicate potential psychopathic tendencies in children are often classified as conduct disorder or callous-unemotional traits. I bet you if the pharmaceutical industry could bring back mental institutions and aslyums and profit from it that above statement would change to reflect the almighty $ Just got done watching the scotus from Tennessee hearing.... Now reread that above statement and watch the video of pharmaceutical companies talk about the endless profits for GAC. Did some of the tobacco companies ceos change fields?? Makes you think.
On the question of status of transgender as a suspect class a transgender individual has the same protections of discrimination as they would under the assumed gender of the person at issue. Created an additional suspect class for a health condition is not consisent with case law. They have the same rights and equal protection under the gender of which they assume. Further, the issue is irrelevent as the law at issue is framed in terms of a medical condition and not interms of gender. The better argument is the fundamental right to healthcare decisions overrides the states interest. Ask yourself why liberals fear this line of argument: that fundamental right to healthcare decisions overrides the states interest.
The answer seems apparent that the ACLU has to argue within the confines of current federal law. For the ACLU to argument fundamentals would be the admit that gender and sex are the same thing, closely intertwined. I think the idea of healthcare as part of our bill of rights sounds nice. It's just a shame that's not the arguments right now...Maybe someday soon.
Abuse is categorized by the law. The SCOTUS interprets the law. The lawyers are claiming that this isn't abuse but rather critical care. So SCOTUS needs to step in and decide which side is right.
Where are these long-term studies because how were these completed because this issue has not been wide spread enough for long enough for longitudinal studies to be done. So I'm unsure how you could do a longitudinal study without sufficient people for the study. Also how did they equate it to transitioning and not counselling or other interventions? It is always good to learn more and understand better.
Experimental medicine and experimental law. Mind-boggling Alito is addressing something not of the Constitution. I thought he made it clear how he stand in Dobbs but I guess law doesn't need to make sense.
Gender Dysphoria is a complex issue that seriously requires more research and honest discussion. It needs to be an ongoing discussion until we have a better situation where people aren’t dying because of non-treatment
Did I understand this correctly? First, Alito attempts to say that this question is too complicated for - idk, I guess 'ignorant?' - upstream judges (non-medical lay people) to decide. This is confusing because these same judges are trusted with making important decisions on women's reproductive care. And while judges are too stupid to decide, partisan legislators (also non-medical lay people) can make an issue 'hotly contested' by simply submitting an Amicus brief or yelling about it on the floor of the House. I think we've all seen that even the most 'well established' principle may not survive this SCOTUS.
Their only role is to determine if a law is constitutional or not. 9 - 0 rulings are the most common type of supreme court rulings. It is the job of your legislators to write the laws correctly.
Alito seemed to be the only one to check the studies in countries that have down the profitable, “affirming care” model. You must not like the reports from Europe.
You're presuming the Justice is describing himself or this Court. You believe a County Court Judge is experienced enough in this field to render rational decisions on it?
The 2022 Dobbs case already decided that so-called "women's reproductive care" is not a matter for judges to decide, so no, your premise is wrong for the very reason you are claiming to be confused about. Even the most altruistic judge who'd decide a case favorably for gender affirming care can decide a case based on wrong or misleading information on the current science or generally accepted views on gender affirming care after further research has been revealed or just with simply changing opinions through the passage of time. Why would you want a judge to make that call? None of them are experts in medicine or can even be assumed to understand the nuance of gender affirming care. If you desperately need to allow gender affirming care (and why would you?) , then you should just go ahead and find a more progressive backwards state like California which would allow it.
If caring about children not having life altering surgery until they are old enough to decide for themselves is "Trump world" than sign me up. Also, many of us would gladly opt-out of Social Security if given the chance. I am in my 40's and have been paying into it for nearly 30 years. I would gladly opt out in favor of controlling my own retirement readiness. It's not the governments job to ensure full grown adults are financially stable enough to retire.
