+anotherone10 If the Porsche Cayman GT4 - ran a 1:37.43 Just imagine What the GT3 Rs will do to that Junk Z06 C7 Down on power Fucking Excuses. Should of tested the car before the video. That what they said about the GTR nismo vs the Z06 c7 what Mt is going to lapped the Z06 months latter and get a better number LMFAO
That lap time was pretty damn close to the GT4 even without full power. I wonder what it could have been without the issues, they should redo it even if they do it outside of this competition.
+Hear That? Yet can do multiple laps of the Nurburgring and run a 7:06? And if I remember correctly the cts-v was one the fastest that lapped Laguna Seca. No limp mode there.
Reds Rhetoric Did you not read Motor Trend's test with this car when it was competing against the GT-R at Laguna? It went into limp mode in 5 laps. What makes you think it can do the Nurburgring multiple times when that track is far longer? The new CTS V faces the same issue. The old one doesn't matter. Both are the newest cars.
+Cy Burkhart i still like that they run most of them stock in order to show how GM tuned them out of the shop. Same way the Cayman is proving that its "downforce" is a bit too robust as the front has issues sticking and etc...i like watching Gtchannel since they always explain how every track has "specific" tuning specific turns are biased to "certain" setups etc...keeping these cars stock helps the driver understand what you are getting into if you are a novice who wont even ever tune the car once purchased etc....both the z06 when properly prepared for a "track" as well as the cayman gt4 will most likely obliterate most of their competitors esp given their price points. I am fond of both but i really wish the z28 was a hoax and that the z06 would have been a 427 LSA or something w.e the big block age is dead tough pill to swallow its why my car woods been growing toward porsche lately esp with their 4.0 im a big fan of factory strokers. Its proof that the companies look into what the people want then they in house produce the bigger stronger faster product that they as a company can stand behind. Too bad chevy never made a 404/406/408 etc of their smallblock it would in NA form be quite the "animal" i would have been stoked if Chevy made some kind of small block stroker that was 400ci+....also i understand a stroker is something you make via modifying the engine post purchase thus earning the name....but you get my point. Its lame when companies arent willing to make a "variant" of a car that is widely produced "yet often tedious" so that the customer no longer has to do such a strenuous task and or other owners that are curios of etc configurations may buy something that is legitimately "made" for the car and engineered via brakes struts shocks etc to function to its fullest potential. Though if the conspiracy is real about the GT4 then it loses my otherwise solid vote for best drivers car of 2015 on the basis that if it can be better then it cant be the best period dont give these companies a cent more than what they are earning via "awards etc" call them out get representatives to make statements etc...as journalists its what MT should do.
All of a sudden it's, "retry this" ..... If the Bentley did this, people would be calling it a piece of crap! $100,000 and it's misfiring? Really? Rhetorical
+Street Speed 717 Tne man just can't drive the Corvette! I've been saying this over and over....well before this video. Just because he is a professional driver does not mean he is the best with every car.
ugh, me too man. I really hope they figured it out and it GM sent them an AT, or least another MT. If the boss from Cadi sent another CTS-V, I'm sure corvette Boss would be aware, and do the same!
I don't think it's simply a different Z06, and the problem is fixed. This car simply cannot withstand the heat and continuous track pounding. Fact is the Z06 WAS supposed to be the most track focused and light Vette, but this isn't. A better solution is to wait for a much colder season.
+Phil Lam *Or Chevy takes out that stupid LT4 and let Cadillac have it and put back in an all new 427 with updated internals and hardware like Direct injection/ Cylinder deactivation etc.. OR let Cadillac engineer the Z06 because their LT4 seems to be working fine since they added their own hardware and tuning to theirs.
+Phil Lam Forced induction is always a problem because the amount of heat they produce, + the car would be 150-200lbs lighter if they got rid of the supercharger and the big cooling system.
***** That's only because they tried to get 600+hp out of it, which goes back to what I was saying, we don't care about a high HP z06, we wanted a lighter Z06
+xtrmplayer Great car but its reliability is an issue just look at the responses from owners. It's great when it works but it is known for its higher than usual reliability issues for a sports car.
+0slavsan0 Car and Driver tested a Z06 on VIR during lightning lap this year and it was the second fastest car that has ever participated in the event behind the 918. www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/general-motors/2015/09/08/chevrolet-corvette-beats-elites/71865642/ Something is up with MT.
+NoReplacementForDisplacement The Stingray they tested last year there, blew up before they were done...after their long-term z51 had done the same at 7k miles previously.
Nope. I prefer the ZR1 as well. I also think it looks meaner. You excited for the '17 ZORA ZR1? Rumored over 730HP 700Ft pounds of torque. Hopefully they fix all thesw glitches
+TelicsHD its sad to see/feel this way about chevy...i remember thinking the same thing about pontiac...im born in 92' so i wasnt able to think/feel the same way about buick or oldsmobile....but i feel like the same thing is happening now but to chevy... the normal people are dumbing down everything in society....cars were one thing that could connect individuals of all types now they are just watered down for the lowest common denominator.......something that cannot be said with "performance cars" yet its sooo damn typical. There is hardily a differentiation between a car that is on par with a "race car" and considered to be a true super/uber/ultra car....( i dont buy into most of those terms marketing bs imo) and a grand touring car they both have all the pussy shit that nobody uses on the track....yet you couldnt tell the difference if you were an idiot which is what i assume the engineers think most people are that see/drive these cars its as if its the impression that they want on people as if every car is just marginalized these days....between economy cars and vettes they all have "performance lines" etc utter bs
+Domino E I wonder why they can't make the Z work when the CTS-V uses pretty much the same drivetrain but it has to haul more weight... I know some people on the forums have tracked their Zs without a problem, but for some reason this test cars are always having problems.
+theblackout8080 The Z06 worked fine in Car and Driver's lightning lap test this year. www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/general-motors/2015/09/08/chevrolet-corvette-beats-elites/71865642/
It's a damn shame that the cooling system on the Z06 is so inefficient. It isn't really excusable... This is excusable on my 90's fbody because it was never meant to be raced continuously (at least not upped on power and raced in autoX), but this thing had a pure track focus, especially the z06? How did they let this go? They bragged about all their testing at the ring - what the hell happened there?
This is marketed as a track capable street car. Yet it's engine cannot handle the abuse. The LS7 would require less cooling and reduce the overall weight. The z06 was always considered the track version of the Corvette. It's now more of a street car
Yes that was on top of their list...emissions. Selling a car with cup tires, serious aero, and massive carbon ceramic brakes but have it limited to a couple laps is the issue I'm stating.
+Macus Thomas The engine can handle the abuse. Why do you think when anyone swaps engines they swap in Corvette motors? I know Chevy just wimped out on the programming because they were concerned about warranty abuse. Ya think?
+k_Jay Car and Driver got one to kick the crap out of a Mclaren 650s and lamborghini Huracan. Motor Trend has problems every time they drive a Z06 this time is way off of a normal run should be in the 1:31-2ish range
+Motor Trend Channel Thank you. I am just so sad to see the Z06 failing every time you are testing it. This is the 3rd failure I recall (Road Atlanta, Willow Springs, and now Laguna). I know there has been a lot of positivity about the car, but I have personally yet to see one work well on a 20 minute session with summer temperatures. :(
+Kendall Jackson From reports after a couple hard laps it over heats and goes to limp mode so it doesn't blow up. They need bigger/better radiators on them.
+Kendall Jackson wrong, look at the C7 Z06 forum, they have a huge 200 page overheating thread stickied at the top. Many people have issues with this car
+Kendall Jackson The C7 Z06 has a terrible cooling problem 2 or 3 hard laps and the car gets way to hot everyone knows this the average joe who tracks his car and even Matt Farah has commented on it.
It still did an amazing time even though it barely hit 100mph on the straight. To me, that is hilarious. The big 3 are a lot better than they used to be, but I think this issue is a sign that they have a ways to go. As per my name, you can see I am a huge vette fan, but I think we all know American cars aren't known for quality. I am a Vette fan that drives Japanese cars because I also need reliability. Come on big 3! You can do it! You are already a lot better than most of the German cars.
Unfortunately, overheating and misfiring is occasionally reported by owners on Corvette forums regarding the C7 Z06. There are some known issues. The engineers have to be thoroughly embarrassed that said issue bit them during a major publication comparison test.
+Phil Lam Hamilton would be trashed. He drives F1 cars - completely different sport compared to the typical cars Randy drives (race cars based on production cars).
+Phil Lam Nah, he's only good at driving high downforce on rail cars. Mercedes sent a DTM racer a couple of years ago to test their AMG and he was a couple of seconds off Randy's pace on Laguna Seca...
bogdan135 you are so naive. Do you remember top gear? When the Stig who has done thousands of laps, set the record on the RPC of 1:44.4. Lewis comes along for the first time and does 1:44.6 on a full wet track. Then came back to do 1:42.9 in the dry. They don't call F1 drivers the best drivers in the world for nothing. And btw, Randy doesn't even do left foot braking. That alone costs him a few tenths per lap.
Honestly i think it should be in a 1st. Im not a fan of american cars but this car is a huge step up design and preformace wise from the previous Corvette.
+Alex Rassi It's been tested by Motor Trend 3 times (Press Event, the Head2Head with the GT-R, and Here at Best Driver's Car) and all of them have revealed engine and overall quality problems. No excuses.
+idh0530 In Head2Head, they had one that was out of alignment, at the press event, they ran it long enough for the car to start protecting itself from overheating but this one turned out to be a problem with a prior tank of fuel since the ECU is very sensitive to varying octane and pressure levels given the forced induction and high fuel pressures of the Direct injection system and it retarded the ignition, causing the car to not make all it's power.
So wait...why didn't GM fix it or give you another car before testing it? I'm sure this ZO6 was not the only one in California that wasn't sold or was used as a test car.
+idh0530 Look what happen with the GTR Nismo vs The Z06 C7 it had the same problems Not putting power down so is it the same car or a hole new car?? If its a hole new car then Gm really Fucked up this time.
243kingfrank While GM did fuck up, no question about that, it was the engine not making power. The Corvette's cornering capabilities aren't at fault here.
+243kingfrank the one they ran against the nismo GTR was out of alignment, which made it get very unsettled and that's why it wasn't able to put the power down right, Carlos Lagos answered the question of whether or not they would redo the test against the GTR with a resounding YES!
Car and driver did a similar test, they didn't have an issue and z07 did amazing, I hope they try again, believe it was faster then everything tested in their test
I read in Jalopnik (jalopnik.com/2015-corvette-z06-is-experiencing-power-loss-thanks-to-1669754727) that this power loss is due to the ECU. After a couple laps on the track the engine get too hot, which increases it's pollutant emissions, so, to pass the strict US regulations, it hampers down the engine's performance.
+ElZamo92 If this was the case all they would've needed to do is let the car cool down a bit before the hotlap, which I'm sure they tried. I would bet it had this power loss issue from the start of their testing.
Probably similar to what I experienced at Thunderhill in a 2.0T ATS midway through a session. Cut massive timing and was way down on power. I was a rolling roadblock on the straights.
***** If that is correct, why would Chevy accept what they're doing? They're practically de-tuning their flagship sports car to run worse and not perform anywhere near its own capabilities. That's not playing it smart; that's playing it stupid. Obviously if they feel the need to do that, the overall long-term quality of the car is an issue. I'm not sure I trust your source anyways. It seems very poorly written and misinformed.
And this is why I prefer a Gen 5 viper. It came out with a few cosmetic and exhaust issues, but no engine and overheating issues. It had no problems making power outta the box and you didn't have to change the oil after 500 miles. Now before you choose to reply a bunch of insults, let me tell you this. I'm a viper guy, but I have always nodded my head in respect to the Corvette and its great history and will always continue to do so. But between both of these cars, Dodge/SRT is really starting to close the gaps when it comes to the differences in price and what kinda car you get for it. For just approx. 6k more, you could buy a base viper that's track ready out of the box. No overheating, no engine problems, and no worries within 500 miles. They're giving me a bigger reason to buy a Viper over a Vette. But hopefully, GM will improve significantly on the the Zora ZR1.
+mgfmgtf ? watch the other MT review of the Gt4 it does nothing but support conspiracy theories that porsche knew the 911 was flawed and knew the cayman chassis+ engineering would yield better performance....yet they deliberately tac on a double clutch wide gear ratio manual gear box that shifts well but is wide...so that hardparkers can feel like race car drivers. Bc thats who has the money to buy them in teh first place...and the engine isnt even the 4.0 its the 3.8 from the carrera...the front gets as loose as the rear in a "mid engine" car while cornering really u think that porsche wanted the car to do that or do you think they just dont want to sully the 911 name. At least Nissan has produced a car that can Go awd or rwd depending on if/when the computer dictates it can utilize the power in a way that will help you make a pass or a better lap time...now that in the modern age is engineering done right....people like porsche and chevy do what theyve always done and its nothing.......whats nice about the GT4 was that porsche even stated they wouldnt then they did....why bc customer demand...they just didnt give the full package of the cayman=911 capabilities scale since the cayman probably proved better...
+andola jackson You talk about the GTR as if it didn't have any flaws. The GTR is a nice car for those people that want to feel like they are good drivers; yeah, let the computer do all the thinking and shifting for you, let's forget the car weights a ton, let's forget you can't do a burn out, let's forget it only comes as an auto, let's forget the seating position is more that of a sedan than a sports car. Ok, now that we have forgotten all of those things, yeah the GTR is perfect. Oh.. One last thing, don't forget to use race gas to avoid loss of power here..
+dinobravo23 Porsche acknowledge and fixed the GT3 engine issue instead of killing people by hiding a problem like GM did with the ignition switch issue.
+Akis SebastianVettel what do you expect when ford is a joke and chevy is the second son......when the EPA/GOVT slams the gavel they cant just take a car(vette) that they have been engineering for 60+ years and tell them this is the kind of engine you can use...as long as you maintain these parameters you can make one....when in reality these "parameters" may be very restrictive to performance as the past has dictated many times before...its up to the manufacturer to form "Power/Performance/Practicality" in the same package theyve been doing the last 60 years...........sting ray all over again indeed just not the 427 version apparently lightening strikes twice.
Corvette. The car for old men who need to think people are looking at them. Even though they aren't. The car for young guys who like cars, but don't actually know anything about cars and cannot actually drive. Corvette. For the smartest guy in the trailer park.
^definitely import fanboy that likes to feel smarter than everyone else.......by his cars on Forza......lmao! Real men get what they want (or what gets them the most ass......which is usually the same).
I agree. based on the factory delivered status of this vehicle. If a Ferrari was delivered like this....all these people above would be shitting on it. There is no excuse for GM to deliver a vehicle in this condition. Especially with their so called vigorous testing. And doing it to RANDY and LAGUNA??!!!!
Also, I really like the corvette. European styling and power and now handling at a lower price point. Just the quality will never be the same. Some guy says, Jealous much up above after the vehicle is delivered with a misfiring under performing engine? Thats sad.
As someone who has never been a corvette fan, and was starting to become one with this current generation of vettes. This video pretty much brought me back to where I was before
it is brand new and it doesn't run right lol imagine after 100k miles , it will burn oil , blow head gasket , overheat , brake cylinder heads ........etc lol
+Ara J Show me another 600+ hp car thats this reliable. Did you watch the video? It didn't fucking explode, just running lean. GM v8s are some of the longest lasting on the road
+Karun Chendrimada it heat soaks. That's a classic example of trying to be cheap with your heat shields. They didn't aluminum blast it to increase surface area. And they optimized its size for cost... Not effectiveness which took them the completely wrong direction. Most of the time GM engineers have no idea what they're doing. Which makes sense because they literally outsource everything if they want it done right.
At least there are two choices of Z06s. The C7 Z06 if people like coupes and want a manual transmission or the CTS-V if people want more seats, Luxury and trunk space. Honestly I would take both. If they make a SUV version of this, I will buy one hands down.
+Steffen Simon if not for its mid life crisis proving gear ratio, and seemingly redundant wing the GT4 would be my pick but its yet again another iteration of a "heres a cool car" but gl you wont ever get its potential out....car since it also falls under manufacturer psudo sabotage.
I know this is a really old video, but did nobody notice that the "misfire" sound is exactly what GM's Performance Traction Management does? Is it possible that PTM wasn't in the correct mode? It makes that noise as it leaves corners, which is exactly what it would be doing in the base Dry mode.
I heard that after only a few laps, the Z06 overheats and limits power badly. A Ford GT owner told be the 460HP C7 Z51 was faster than the C7 Z06 after only a couple laps and i thought he was full of it. Then i went to a couple track days just to watch and yup, every single C7 Z06 was coming in the pits to cool off after only 3 laps at COTA. The Z51s kept running. But it's still 2015. This is the Z06's first year of production. I'm sure they'll fix the problem and it'll be the true track car it was made out to be!
NOT a heat soak problem, people! This has been covered. Some of these cars are arriving with faulty engines, and ALL of them are arriving with VERY conservative ECUs that cause it to stray far below from that 650 power rating.
i got a c7 and i know what he mean by misfiring, i get that very often too. it's when you hit the paddle all the way and the car it just not responding to what is should be (some times the acceleration can be very sluggish). and it's even more obvious when you only have half tank of fuel left, you can even tell by the exhaust sound it diminish !
+raikkonen2013 This same Z06 did smoke all at C&D VIR test. Video should be out this month. MT will retest Z06 like it did at Willow. Results should be out before the end of this yr.
So some are saying Heat-Soak and others ECU programming. I lean to ECU programming that is limiting the cars performance. I just hope for GM's sake it not limiting power due to stay within limits of Emissions regulations. Think VW!!!
This has been a reoccurring problem with the C7 ZO6, this isn't the first time it's had problems with heat soak. Google it and it's everywhere, all over the forums. This also isn't the first time MTrend has run into problems with the Z. Sometimes with the indicators not even registering that the car is overheating. Heat Soak/Overheating = Power Loss. That's the risk you take when you introduce forced induction to the equation.
I remember when MotorTrend gave the the Best Driver's Car award to the 2014 Camaro Z/28, so many people hated them and claimed they were paid by GM. Now we have people claiming they hate GM due to Ford bribing or bias against GM just because of their testing of the C7 Z06 Corvette. I don't know about you people but I find this rib-crushingly hilarious.
Motor Trend should have just called Chevy and said "Yo, Dude, your shit's fucked up." I'm sure Chevy could have sent them a Corvette that's not fucked up, save a little face in front of millions of people watching the Motor Trend channel.
To those who don't subscribe to the magazine, the supercharger wouldn't make boost, and the engine was off by like 8 degrees or something. The chevy techs couldn't fix it or replace it in the one day allotted time.
I love fords, I really do. There's the GT, fiesta RS, Focus RS500, mustang Shelby gt350, the escort RS cosworth..... But .... BUT.... THIS CORVETTE..... IS JUST FUCKING AMAZING. THE SOUND ITSELF IS JUST ECSTACY.
I think a HEALTHY Z06 can probably do a 1:31 lap time. It's sooo much more grip than the ZR1 and that did a 1:33. I'm SURE if Chevy sent out a working one it could be the fastest car ever outside the P1 and 918
Even when it's wounded this car is still an animal! To still pull a time like that is amazing and speaks to the excellent engineering in this chassis combined with the brake and aero package. Issues happen with all cars of this calibre. Ferrari, Porsche...they all have these types of issues. The engineers will regroup and fix the problem. Sometimes when you try to push the envelope bad things happen. Such is life.
Randy is not the first person to have this issue. The C7 Z06's have major cooling issues. The inter-cooler is not up to the job. They need to take a note from Dodges book as the Hellcats (Which have a large air to liquid IC) do run after run with no power drop.
For lovers of numbers just compare CTS-V speed in final straight that is almost 10mph higher than ZO6 and every other straight that means the car was running way to underpower cause only if Z06 had same exact speed not ever say higher time should be 5sec faster!!! I dare to say when they run it again it will destroy 1.32min easily cause the grip and brakes of that car are completely insane Weldone to Chevrolet for that amazing car they built and i hope to see them soon in Laguna Seca for that deserved 1.32min
I read this article in motor trend magazine. GM blew their chance to dominate this challenge. In the article they said gm even gave them the car with brakes that were shot. Such a great car. Such a let down.. AMG GTS got best drivers car because the Z06 had issues.. Sad days
In case you guys forget. The Viper TA!! Yeah babe! The TA finish it in....1:33.62 known as 4.98 seconds faster than the C7 Z06 Z07. Not to mention the TA is just some suspension and braking upgrades from GTS and it kill the C7 Z06 Z07 which features (new engine, new transmission, new chassis, new suspension settings, differential, aero, frame) by an ass raping 4.98 seconds.
ATTENTION EVERYONE: In case you haven't already heard, they quickly found the problem with this particular Vette when they got it back to the shop. Come to find out, some jerk off mechanic did some routine maintenance and plugged stuff back in incorrectly. That's all it was. They reconnected it in half a second, and SHAZAAM, the car was fixed, and it is indeed a monster. They should at least put this information in the description box. ( Executives at Chrysler/Dodge probably bribed them NOT too, lol. )
+Howabouthetruth ATTENTION person who is all up GM's rear end. In the latest Head2Head (Z06 vs Viper ACR) both Jason and Johnny say that EVERY Vette (Z06) they have tested had some sort of issue and the car is feels UNFINISHED. Same thing I have been saying since day one. GM continues to build garbage.
+Bill Panop Bill, your nothing but a stupid pom pom waving cheerleader. Just because they say "unfinished" for this new Vette, it is actually a compliment, meaning IT IS SO CLOSE TO PERFECT. AT THE SAME TIME, THEY REPEATEDLY MENTION HOW THEY HATE THE VIPER'S SHIT AIR CONDITIONING, IT'S TERRIBLE RIDE COMFORT, IT SOUNDS LIKE SHIT, EVEN BURNING ITS OCCUPANTS. The Viper is nothing more than a race car with head lights, tail lights & turn signals, and SCREW building a real car that you can drive every day in COMFORT. They both tell you THEY WOULD CHOOSE THE VETTE TO TAKE HOME TO KEEP FOR THEMSELVES...........HANDS DOWN...........WATCH THE VIDEO AGAIN, DUMBASS. And gee, I wonder why the Chevy small blocks are the number one choice world wide for a platform to build a hit rod from. ANSWER: DEPENDABILITY, PERFORMANCE, COST. You watch & see which will clock more miles, the Vette or that stupid Viper. We all already know the answer to that. Now..............FUCK OFF BOY.
+Bill Panop SEe my other response to you. They eventually found out that some jerk off mechanic during routine maintenance simply plugged some stuff back together the wrong way in this Vette. It was a stupid mistake. Problem solved & the Vette ran great. Also, look at the latest Viper vs Vette on this channel: THEY SAID THEY WOULD CHOOSE THE VETTE, HANDS DOWN BETWEEN THE TWO, TO DRIVE HOME FOR KEEPS. Now........fuck off again.
Howabouthetruth You are a FAN BOY MORON. Get your head out GM's ass and breath some fresh air for a change. This Vette is GARBAGE. The ACR wipes it's ass with it. As for the SB people in the US build them cause it CHEAP and parts are plenty. If parts for mopar and ford were as cheap and plenty people would use those as much. If you ever leave your trailer park and visit another country you will see that they use motors that are cheap to build in their designated areas. Most times it's all about the Benjamin's buddy!
For everyone saying this deserves a redo I'm sorry it doesn't. The reason is Chevrolet decided not to go over that specific car to make sure it didn't have any issues before sending it out to Motor Trend so stop saying it deserves a redo I really wanted to see what it was capable of too but that's how it is.
Probably high IATs from the blower. High IATs = reduced ignition advance. And once they get heat soaked, it takes a very long time for them to cool down. One of the big downsides of positive displacement blowers.
Viper ACR should have been in this test. Just not with Randy at the helm. The Z06 reliability issues are a huge disappointment and point to more egregious errors at GM. Motor Trend has the greatest jobs in the world. Good show, guys and gals.
The issue was the ECU was tuned conservatively for both emissions and so chevy can sell the vette with a 100.000 miles warranty. It sucks for this test, but owners can take it to an aftermarket tuner to get the ECU remapped.
This isn't the first or second time an engine derived from the LT1 or LT1 itself has crapped out in a car magazine test. I don't trust it yet. Shame, cause the rest of the car is amazing.
Car misfiring, not running right, pulling timing... Lets keep pushing it on track, good option.
This year model doesn't do good in high temperature
It should have been a 2016.

Yep, The old ZR1 did a 1:33:70 so something is REALLY wrong with that Z06.
Or the Z06 in general
Phil Lam
Doubt it.
+Reds Rhetoric He's right. The car goes into limp mode after 5 laps due to improper cooling design. Same with the new CTS V.
+Hear That? Yet can do multiple laps of the Nurburgring and run a 7:06? And if I remember correctly the cts-v was one the fastest that lapped Laguna Seca. No limp mode there.

If that car is misfiring and obviously defective, will we see a proper Z06 lap in the near future, or before the end of this event?
+Cy Burkhart Unfortunately I doubt it. You fuck up in a race whether that be illness or a fall you lose.
no they have these cars for a short time. Looks like it's over for a wile on laguna for the z06
Certainly, Chevy will surely send them another zo6 soon. Same happened with the gtr vs corvette thing a few months back.
Really? Rhetorical
When it didn't hit 125 by Turn 1, I knew something was wrong.
The C63 was over 130 at that point, and it has 150 less HP.
I Saw that too when I seen the car was running slow as the ctsv I knew it wasn't going to end well
+Evander Smart Yeah i was stunned it only hit 126. And the lap time was abysmal.
My M3 hit 120 by turn 1 and I need to release gas otherwise the rear wheels will loose grip.
I feel like that Corvette didn’t have its full power when accelerating
*sigh...
+Street Speed 717 The C7 Z06's have been over overheating... :/ I'm sure the problem will get fixed soon though.
Exoticars19 always something lol
Haris Qureshi this time they blamed the gas!
+Street Speed 717
Tne man just can't drive the Corvette! I've been saying this over and over....well before this video. Just because he is a professional driver does not mean he is the best with every car.
+Street Speed 717
*The man....*
UGH. All I wanted was to see this thing do a proper run.
ugh, me too man.
***** That's only because they tried to get 600+hp out of it, which goes back to what I was saying, we don't care about a high HP z06, we wanted a lighter Z06
please say you're gonna retry this
uh no they film everything over a day or 2 .. they will have to follow up after best drivers car
+xtrmplayer Great car but its reliability is an issue just look at the responses from owners. It's great when it works but it is known for its higher than usual reliability issues for a sports car.
I helped Chevy by hopping in my Z06 and went to Mazda Raceway myself. Managed a 1:35.6 with everything turned off... in Forza Motorsport 6 :D
i believe they ran a 1:34. that still sucks compared to a zr1
Motor Trend seems to be really unlucky in terms of receiving a Z06 in proper conditions for their tests.
I think this is like the 3rd time this has happened lmfaoooo
Just go to show that GM is still producing junk.
+0slavsan0 Car and Driver tested a Z06 on VIR during lightning lap this year and it was the second fastest car that has ever participated in the event behind the 918.
www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/general-motors/2015/09/08/chevrolet-corvette-beats-elites/71865642/
Something is up with MT.
NoReplacementForDisplacement No one tests cars harder than Motor Trend from what I've seen.
+NoReplacementForDisplacement The Stingray they tested last year there, blew up before they were done...after their long-term z51 had done the same at 7k miles previously.
Did you guys have it in V4 mode? ;)
The magazine stated that the lap time was 1:34 and second only to the Porsche 918 in terms of lap times at Laguna seca
Well the Viper ACR Viper TA and ZR1 each ran a th-cam.com/video/dguUQUq8JL8/w-d-xo.htmlm33s so that's false
+Domino E That was on drag radials so it doesn't count...
demongawl I'm talking about laptimes
Did they redo the lap?.
+michael vickers That's what the last gen c6 z06 ran back in 2012
And people look at me crazy when I say I prefer the ZR1
Nope. I prefer the ZR1 as well. I also think it looks meaner. You excited for the '17 ZORA ZR1? Rumored over 730HP 700Ft pounds of torque. Hopefully they fix all thesw glitches
+Domino E
I like the ZR1 a lot, a very wild and unhinged kind of car... My favorite Corvette is the LS7-powered C6 Z06/Z07! :)
JediMindTricks183 I hope they make the Zora active aero light weight that car is going to rape everything including the new GT and ACR
+Domino E can't wait for the next gen zr1 to come out in the near future :D
Does anyone know how they actually start the hot laps? Do they just do one lap and start the timer on the second lap?
Damn Chevy, fix your shit.
Not Chevy, gm
+TelicsHD It's Chevy the Caddys ran perfectly fine
I really need to see a proper test of this running right. I think this is easily in the top 2 or 3 cars this year
I love reading people argue about cars they can't afford.
1 Porsche 918 Spyder Randy Pobst 1:29.89 887 / 1640

I'm angry AF with this. This is unacceptable,Chevy. If the car is not working properly then swap it, this is not the mark of the Corvette team!!
GT7786 i agree although i love corvettes that was ridiculous af
Starts at 1:34 and even though it wasn't running right at the time, it still sounded awe inspiring. Especially at 1:41 fourth gear dude is nuts.
Shame they didn't keep the LS7 but give it DI and focus on weight reduction. That's what the Zo6 was supposed to be.
+Andrew Nicholas but it's inconsistent on track.
Ya think?
Obviously not if it has such conservative timing maps. Yes the engines are popular but mostly standard LS motors not the LT4.
this run just demands a redo... that time just feels inaccurate.
+k_Jay Car and Driver got one to kick the crap out of a Mclaren 650s and lamborghini Huracan. Motor Trend has problems every time they drive a Z06 this time is way off of a normal run should be in the 1:31-2ish range
+Michael B 1:31??? Lolll
MarcoPiperr Why lol? ZR1 did 1:33 and C7 Z06 is consistently quicker.
Haven't they done a Z06 vs a Nismo GTR lap on this track earlier this year ? Anyone remember the time ?
SoCalSupercars 'Think it was Willow Springs...
Amazing shifting skills. I have not gotten that quick with the downshifts.
Hits a home run with the Camaro Z/28 and the new Corvette Stingray.
Strikes out with the Z06.
Come on GM. Consistency is key.
How hard is it to fit a better cooling system in this damn car!? The thing heats up oil better than a deep fryer...
+Thomas Griffin this is just a bad vette. it has nothing to do with the heating, this vette had a defect in its engine not all vettes.
+Kendall Jackson From reports after a couple hard laps it over heats and goes to limp mode so it doesn't blow up. They need bigger/better radiators on them.
+Kendall Jackson Then why is this the 4th Corvette Motortrend has need to be fixed by GM?
The engineers have to be thoroughly embarrassed that said issue bit them during a major publication comparison test.
fairly impressive time for not running good. not by a mile and not the fastest but still one of the fastest times so far
I want to see Lewis Hamilton do a hot lap against Randy in any car.
Randy will be toasted
+Adeum Deus He also drives a 760 LH, LaFerrari, and P1 as well as dozens of Mercedes road cars.
Honestly i think it should be in a 1st. Im not a fan of american cars but this car is a huge step up design and preformace wise from the previous Corvette.
+MuppetsSh0w actually it is a big step backwards in terms of the engine :DD
it should win yet it's unreliable and can't do fast lap on a track yet it's a track car? logic?
+matthew von how can you say it can do fast laps? It hasn't been properly tested
+derbigpr500 For the drag race, GM gave them a red Vette with no Aero Package.
+idh0530 Look what happen with the GTR Nismo vs The Z06 C7 it had the same problems Not putting power down so is it the same car or a hole new car?? If its a hole new car then Gm really Fucked up this time.
+243kingfrank nope you really fucked up did you even read the magazine at all.
1:38 in limp mode lol
American cars don’t have a limp mode haha
Car and driver did a similar test, they didn't have an issue and z07 did amazing, I hope they try again, believe it was faster then everything tested in their test
I read in Jalopnik (jalopnik.com/2015-corvette-z06-is-experiencing-power-loss-thanks-to-1669754727) that this power loss is due to the ECU. After a couple laps on the track the engine get too hot, which increases it's pollutant emissions, so, to pass the strict US regulations, it hampers down the engine's performance.
+ElZamo92 not plausible since emissions tests aren't done at full throttle.
it also does it so it can last 100000 miles like advertised. just read the article in the link.
+ElZamo92 This specific problem was due to the hardware not making any boost. It's on the article.
+ElZamo92 If this was the case all they would've needed to do is let the car cool down a bit before the hotlap, which I'm sure they tried. I would bet it had this power loss issue from the start of their testing.
Uh no, a ecu holding back power doesn't make something misfire lol
Man that noise! So much louder than I expected!
1:15 Spoiler alert! LOL.
I just bought this EXACT car
Z06 2LZ with Z07 and a manual
The best manual transmission car every produced in America
Definitely not down on power!😎
This is twice now that MT has had a dud C7 Z06, the first one being H2H with the Nismo GT-R. What up, Chevy??
Probably similar to what I experienced at Thunderhill in a 2.0T ATS midway through a session. Cut massive timing and was way down on power. I was a rolling roadblock on the straights.
And people wonder why these cars cost less than foreign exotics? As shown in this video, quality is one of those reasons...
Import tax
+Andrew Nicholas Hmm. Wouldn't that be easily solved with a good after market ECU?
***** If that is correct, why would Chevy accept what they're doing? They're practically de-tuning their flagship sports car to run worse and not perform anywhere near its own capabilities. That's not playing it smart; that's playing it stupid. Obviously if they feel the need to do that, the overall long-term quality of the car is an issue. I'm not sure I trust your source anyways. It seems very poorly written and misinformed.
Charlie Long most foreign cars don't even last a year with out breaking down
And this is why I prefer a Gen 5 viper. But hopefully, GM will improve significantly on the the Zora ZR1.
hahahahhaha!!!! That´s ridiculous. God bless Porsche Engineering!
+mgfmgtf ? watch the other MT review of the Gt4 it does nothing but support conspiracy theories that porsche knew the 911 was flawed and knew the cayman chassis+ engineering would yield better performance....yet they deliberately tac on a double clutch wide gear ratio manual gear box that shifts well but is wide...so that hardparkers can feel like race car drivers.
+mgfmgtf
LOL. yeah, God bless those engines blowing up or burning of GT3/RS cars. Porsche is waaaaaaay overrated.
+dinobravo23 god bless their excellent way of handling their mistakes.
+dinobravo23 Porsche acknowledge and fixed the GT3 engine issue instead of killing people by hiding a problem like GM did with the ignition switch issue.
Hope they get one going before the competition is over, really want to see that lap time.
The LT4 has some serious problems.....
The first chevy i've ever seen that has problems and every one is saying that chevy makes shitty stuff... it breaks my heart
A corvette with problems? surprise surprise
You've got BIGGER issues.
glorious noise coming out of that
Corvette.
The car for old men who need to think people are looking at them. Even though they aren't.
The car for young guys who like cars, but don't actually know anything about cars and cannot actually drive.
Corvette. For the smartest guy in the trailer park.
+Ryan DeClue Jealous much? Wow.
Thats sad.
+Ryan DeClue corvette for the person who wants to kick any ones ass who thinks they have a fast car,, well when theyre running right
As someone who has never been a corvette fan, and was starting to become one with this current generation of vettes.
Karun Chendrimada viper , ferrari , lamborghini ....they aren't full reliable but better than this crap lol
Ara J at least this one didnt catch fire, try again
Karun Chendrimada so if a car doesn't catch fire it is reliable ...woww speechless
At least there are two choices of Z06s. The C7 Z06 if people like coupes and want a manual transmission or the CTS-V if people want more seats, Luxury and trunk space.
Honestly I would take both. If they make a SUV version of this, I will buy one hands down.
Porsche > Chevy
+Steffen Simon if not for its mid life crisis proving gear ratio, and seemingly redundant wing the GT4 would be my pick but its yet again another iteration of a "heres a cool car" but gl you wont ever get its potential out....car since it also falls under manufacturer psudo sabotage.
until you look at a healthy running c7 z06 that puts it nearly on par with a 918 .....
I think that the Porsche is more modern and more an Allrounder
+Josh427SS I'd like a more reliable car, thanks. Keep the GM trash.
+Omaha419 4.8L stock engine with two turbos making 1203hp
I know this is a really old video, but did nobody notice that the "misfire" sound is exactly what GM's Performance Traction Management does?
Is it possible that PTM wasn't in the correct mode? It makes that noise as it leaves corners, which is exactly what it would be doing in the base Dry mode.
Such a disappointment!
I'm sure they'll fix the problem and it'll be the true track car it was made out to be!
damn chevy do you ever not know how to make a piece of shit
Your comment gave me cancer.
exactly
+Ty Bailey Back up until the late 90's chevy didn't make crap....then in the 2000's they made crap. lol Same goes for all makes imop. But that's me.
+Ty Bailey Um I had to read your Comment upside down lol. Your right Gm Does not know how to build a Car God bless Porsche Engineering
Randy was obviously pissed. I am a huge fan of the C7.R in the Tudor series though :-)
remember the volkswagen joke? well at least their car run properly....
Lets give it up to the Z06/CTSV for being the best sounding cars in the competition. *starts applauding.
Corvettes suck! Unfortunately
I can't watch this anymore this is too awesome
NOT a heat soak problem, people! This has been covered. Some of these cars are arriving with faulty engines, and ALL of them are arriving with VERY conservative ECUs that cause it to stray far below from that 650 power rating.
i got a c7 and i know what he mean by misfiring, i get that very often too. it's when you hit the paddle all the way and the car it just not responding to what is should be (some times the acceleration can be very sluggish). and it's even more obvious when you only have half tank of fuel left, you can even tell by the exhaust sound it diminish !
Shoddy reliability seems to be a recurring theme with the new 'Vette. It's a real shame as it looks like it can be quite a beast if it runs right.
Everyone expected the Vette to smoke this test, unfortunately we'll have to wait for next year
+raikkonen2013 This same Z06 did smoke all at C&D VIR test. Video should be out this month. MT will retest Z06 like it did at Willow. Results should be out before the end of this yr.
Jeffrey Williams thank you, the Vette deserves the top spot
Hello Motor Trend, could you please ask Randy why he upshifted at 1:42 ? because he downshift a second later :)
Viper ACR will run low 1:30 maybe even into the 1:29 no overheating!
Motor Trend should have just called Chevy and said "Yo, Dude, your shit's fucked up."
I'm sure Chevy could have sent them a Corvette that's not fucked up, save a little face in front of millions of people watching the Motor Trend channel.
To those who don't subscribe to the magazine, the supercharger wouldn't make boost, and the engine was off by like 8 degrees or something. The chevy techs couldn't fix it or replace it in the one day allotted time.
The car felt heavy, just wondering if the 8speed would make a difference???
This car deserve another chance. Running properly and it would humiliate that Mercedes!
Why was the other 2015 Z06 video removed ( Viper ACR vs Corvette Z06 head to head)?
I dare to say when they run it again it will destroy 1.32min easily cause the grip and brakes of that car are completely insane
Weldone to Chevrolet for that amazing car they built and i hope to see them soon in Laguna Seca for that deserved 1.32min
I read this article in motor trend magazine. GM blew their chance to dominate this challenge. In the article they said gm even gave them the car with brakes that were shot. Such a great car. Such a let down.. AMG GTS got best drivers car because the Z06 had issues.. Sad days
It's the curse of the Z06. They should have called this car the ZR1 and made a lightweight Grand Sport track car with the LT1 and wide body.
There's no way this isn't the fastest car here. That's simply an objective truth.
If you watched their other video with the 2011 ZO6 it did 1:34, this C7 didn't do so well.
Howabouthetruth
You are a FAN BOY MORON.
A GM car that isn't designed properly? You don't say. There's a reason they are cheaper than competitors. Cutting corners doesn't make for a good car.
Probably high IATs from the blower. High IATs = reduced ignition advance. And once they get heat soaked, it takes a very long time for them to cool down. One of the big downsides of positive displacement blowers.
I believe everything Randy says!
Viper ACR should have been in this test. Just not with Randy at the helm.
The Z06 reliability issues are a huge disappointment and point to more egregious errors at GM.
Motor Trend has the greatest jobs in the world. Good show, guys and gals.
So, MT, you guys planning on revisiting this once Chevy fixes the cooling issue?
they did. Check out the Viper ACR vs Vette Z06 head to head. They even used this same car.
*****
Thanks, gonna check that one out before bed tonight :D
@@2010challengerRT - they removed that video.
so its runs a 1:39 yet its not running right? so when running right it will prob be a good 2 seconds faster?
The issue was the ECU was tuned conservatively for both emissions and so chevy can sell the vette with a 100.000 miles warranty. It sucks for this test, but owners can take it to an aftermarket tuner to get the ECU remapped.
I don't know about you guys but i LOVE this car :-)
What's the circle scale above the mph during the laps?
Damn. I really want this car to win.
It's hilarious that the old ZR1 did 1:33.70 on the same track! LOL
It was not running right, misfiring in best drivers car 2015 it said it broke down.
This isn't the first or second time an engine derived from the LT1 or LT1 itself has crapped out in a car magazine test. I don't trust it yet. Shame, cause the rest of the car is amazing.
