      Plot twist: The record collection got rid of its person _on purpose._ 😮 That guy was an asshole anyway; he never dusted his records, kept them stacked horizontally on a shelf exposed to sunlight, and hadn't replaced the needle in 25 years. The records are hoping to adopt a new person who actually cares about them.

    With the way they're pricing a lot of the stuff it really makes you wonder two things, 1) are they absolutely insane and 2) are they actually in the market of selling anything? What happens to the stock that's not sold?

    • @crossmr
      @crossmr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +126

      It's a symptom of the times. 30 years ago no one knew the value of anything. You couldn't look things up on Ebay or the internet at all. Outside of specialty hobbies like cards/coins/stamps/etc there were tons of deals to be had. In the mid 2000s that started to go away, and now everyone just googles everything. it's no longer about what they want, it's about what they think they can get.

      I wish Goodwill would realize that they're not eBay, and if they want to sell really obscure old electronics that almost no one is interested in, they can't charge whatever the going rate online is for it.

    • @johnathin0061892
      @johnathin0061892 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      There are still deals, but one has to put a lot more work into it. They miss stuff at thrift stores all the time, but it is, usually more obscure stuff like valuable VHS, old boxed computer games (often mistaken for board games), stuff that isn't mainstream collectible.

    Rainbow vacuums are the best!!! My mom had one growing up and it literally lasted 30 years of regular use. I think I remember it being serviced once and then worked for another decade with no problems. I think eventually the hose broke and that's what did it in. They probably suck (no pun intended) compared to newer models but I have so many un-fond memories of having vacuuming and having to dump the reservoir, etc.

      My mom still has the Rainbow vacuum she splurged on in the 80s. It was marketed as the best vacuum for people with allergies, since everything would be trapped in the water. That was before every low-buck vacuum had a HEPA filter. It certainly did a great job of cleaning, which you would know from dumping the disgusting muddy sludge after you were done. XD

    We had a Rainbow vacuum when I was a kid. They were sold in a sort of MLM scheme like Kirby, but not quite as scammy. The main selling feature was that you filled the body with water, which would hold all the dirt etc. It didn't come out of the vacuum, it just sloshed around in the tank as you pulled the thing around. Then you had to dump dirty water. They came with scented drops you could add to the water and it would freshen up the rooms.

    Parents had one of those plug-in flashlights. It was marketed as an emergency light. You were meant to turn the switch on and leave it plugged in, in a hallway or something. When there was AC the light would go out, but the nicads would trickle charge. If the power went out, it’d light up. The head hinged up and down a bit so you could aim the “emergency” light when it was sitting on the wall.

    That Royal typewriter... it's been many, *many* years ago, so my memory could be faulty, but I think we actually had that exact same model! (It's also plausible that, since Royal built so many different models, that it's just a very similar model.) Of course, we eventually got an electric typewriter, which is still sitting on a desk in dad's old office. It hasn't been turned on in years because it was easier for my parents just to get me to use the computer to type whatever they needed and print it out.
    Actually, the price on that Tandy 2 was a little high but not totally unreasonable. A "parts machine" goes for $70-$100, and a working one with manual goes for about $140. Cut about $50 off the price, and someone would've snapped it up. (The cassette recorder is nice but not strictly necessary. The CoCo2 could use practically any cassette recorder.) The TI-99/4A, however, was definitely overpriced. New-old stock in the original box is going for $150-$175. Not only was that one obviously *not* new-old stock, it didn't have the box or manuals. $50 might have enticed someone.

Now that the lockdown is partially lifted, more and more resellers are showing up so I'm having less luck.

    My parents had the Rainbow vacuum. I spilled white paint on the floor in my room one time and my dad cleaned it up with that after adding some water. Or so my memory tells me; I was young. We had it for a while, though, and it did work extremely well. It is basically a shop vac with an easily-removable basin for pouring out the liquid/filth mix. I miss it.

    When you mentioned price of the TRS80 local goodwill near me has a manager that is ridiculous for pricing things outrageously. Like records etc. I heard her arguring with a customer that price they had was wrong sha changed for higher. So a clerk asked why. She stated. " Hey on eBay they go for this price so tbats what we are going to put on it someone will pay whats there if they want it " thats in Norwich CT. I believe still same manager there...

      The thing most of those managers don’t realize is they’re looking at eBay prices of things that aren’t selling, not sold prices.

      Go to that store as well, can confirm. At least the blu rays are typically only marked at 2-3 dollars

    That rainbow vacuum gave me flash backs to the ‘mini museum’ inside the Electrolux store front my father used to run. The brands aren’t related in any way I’m aware of, but that style of vacuum makes me nastolgic every single time. Better days.
