"This is a rare near-contemporary hit the Grateful Dead covered, joining Hey Jude from 1969 and Werewolves Of London in 1978. Robbie Robertson wrote the song and included it on his 1987 solo debut album. In 1991, Pop superstar Rod Stewart covered the song, and less than two years after its release, the Grateful Dead started covering it, sung by Phil Lesh. A very welcome addition to the setlist." - David Lemieux

I was at this show. Drove over the border from Canada with a whack of friends. We had taken some great acid, played frisbee and laughed like crazy. Best times of my life.
At age sixteen, runaway to SF, dressed in a purple sari, I placed a pink carnation lei on his neck at Winterland, back when we could still actually get onstage. I asked him to play box of rain. Years later, he excavated it from the crypt, and it was again part of the repertoire. RIP
I was in the front row for this song and show. My first and only time in the Phil Zone. Hitchhiked from to Corning to Buffalo for this. :) R.I.P. Phil. 😞
What an amazing, poignantly piercing song! I have to admit listening to this version yesterday , after I heard the news, brought a few tears to my eyes! " There you go, moving across the water " RIP Phil and thank you for " all of it". 🙏😎🚀!
They played this at my first GD show in Oakland. I’d had never heard it before but it hit me hard. I was 12 years old. I searched and begged for the bootleg just to hear it again. I still cry
In 93 I was not the more knowledgeable Deadhead then as I am now(hehe). But I remember standing in the Omni I think and I heard the beginning of Broken Arrow around me. It so happens in HS I had that RR solo album so I knew the song. I was silly happy and spread the word.Young, fun times. RIP Robbie Robertson.
I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that until this morning I did not know who wrote the song. My mom has this loathing thing for Rod Stewart, and so do I to a point. The Faces stuff is pretty cool. Anyway in 8th grade in 91 his version was on the radio a lot, and I really liked it. When I heard the Dead play it (on tape) a handful of years later I was instantly enamored, although I didn’t quite understand why they were playing a Rod Stewart song. The melody is absolutely infectious. Makes sense it’s a Robbie song.
There was a radio blip years ago, Get out of bed, fix your head and see the Dead, RIP Robbie, your legend lives on thru Phil singing your song. Lesh is the best bass player period, and has a strong voice
Phil made so many great memories for my family and friends. Whether it was being in the Phil Zone at Dead Shows with high school buddies or introducing my wife to Dead music at a Phil & Friends show with Joan Osbourne on the Chicago lakefront at Northerly Island or so many great family dinners at Terrapin Crossroads with my sister who lives in San Rafael! Thanks Phil for your ability to make magic for so many with your love and music.
Thank you Phil. I’ve had a framed photo from this show hanging in the kitchen of every place I lived from the age of 16 to the age of 35 when I gave it to my best friend, and now it hangs in his house. Love you Mr.Lesh. You taught me how to play bass 33 years ago and I could never thank you enough ❤️
Go gently into that good night Phil! You will be missed. You and Jerry started a movement in the Grateful Dead that can never be erased or forgotten. Thank you for the inspiration your music has given me over the years. May you rest in peace eternally🕊️♥️ 5:23
RIP to my fellow Phil, my fellow bass player, thank you for the beautiful birthday show last year (7/23/2023) and all the ripping Phil and friends and Furthur shows over the years. NFA
Good old Phil still kicking and dropping the Phat Phil Bombs. He is my favorite member of the GRATEFUL DEAD. And will be always. PEACE & SAFETY to all. RIP Robby Robertson.
Thanks Robbie. Thanks Phil, Thanks Jerry, Bobby, Billy, Mickey, everyone. Thanks family, thank you God. For the Grateful Dead. For everything. WE GOT MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB!! All my love.
I feel as if this is a cover of a song that speaks to how we as deadheads feel when we listen to the dead. RIP Phil. Thank you for the wonderful contributions to our lives. 💜💜💜
It *is* the one I was lucky enough to see. Killer. The sound was amazing in the Phil Zone that day, as it is here. Much appreciated!! This is the first time I've heard this show sound so good, and the first time ever that I've seen video. Cheers! ✌🏽🌻
I was in the Phil Zone for this. :) Rich Stadium is now Highmark Stadium, and will be closed/demolished at some point after the multi-billion dollar New Bills Stadium across the street is constructed (in what is now and will used-to-be Erie Community College South Campus, which is being "evicted" and relocated, where the Parking Lot Scene was for this show, and because Football matters more to Erie County than public higher education). There will be ghosts. This was my only GD show. I hitchhiked from Corning to Buffalo (easily scored a ride in 5 minutes), then easily scored a scalper ticket, and heard openly spoken rumors from various Deadheads arguing that PHIL WILL SING THIS SHOW, because they had determined some kind of Dead Calculus based on recent shows they'd attended that Phil Will Sing this night. So Sing He Did. Thank You, Phil. Rest In Power, & The Wall Of Sound That Was The Hands Of God to you will thump bass notes across the multiverse as you travel onward. :)
I think the first time I heard Phil sing was at the Rubber Bowl in '86 when they closed on 'Box of Rain'... I could have damn near floated home on the happiness that gave me.
Phil Lesh and Jack Casady are the two BEST Bassists ever. No others even come close. Thank you Phil and Jack. Your Bass (n Music) beats thru me then, now and allways. Blessings everybody and remember: Be Kind. 💙❤️ My Sisters used to see me 'trippin' thru the audience and pull me backstage. Phil was always moving, running around and smiling, it was like he brought happiness n positivity w him everywhere he went. Don't know he was w others but once when he and i turned around at the same time and totally collided, instead of getting annoyed he just smiled and we laughed as both of us were apologizing for the collision (even tho he was hurrying to get back onstage for the 2nd set).

When I saw a pic of him off to the side reading a comic book I knew they were a cool bunch, sealed the deal when I found they were peaceful anarchy
When ever I went to a Dead show I sat on Phils' side and chanted " let Phil sing". Their shows were always a wonderful place to be
