I just love the fact that grunts breed so damn quickly to the point where they could probably just out exist the flood
Or, if the Flood manage to get some spores into one of their methane environments where they don't need their masks and tanks, it would have massive amounts of free real estate, er, biomass to infect.

If the flood breaks the respirator after being infected the bio mass will die unless the flood manages to transforms the grunt's biology to breathe other gasses or else infected or not the grunt will die either way..... @@toxic9525 the flood does change they’re biological dna because we’ve seen them fight in places that are filled with gas or without air without needing any air breathers and they are able to survive for thousands of years without any food so I don’t think we can assume that just because you have to breathe air doesn’t mean that the flood does as well after infecting you

Grunts are so tough and strong; it took Glassing their entire world to subdue them.
They're strong for they're size (probably because of the square cube law) but they're real strength comes from they're mass breeding capabilities. They're the fastest breeders in the covenant. An elite could take on dozens of grunt at once, but that doesn't matter because in reality he'd be battling thousands of them all do to they're sheer number.

@@griffingower1883 Engineers are biomechanical organisms, so it isn't immunity so much as being inedible. Drones are not immune, like jackals and others they are too weak for the Flood to repurpose into combatants, they are purely for food/biomass which is why we do not see infected Drones. Hunters are only resistant because the fuel rod cannon and its heavy use induces Boren's Syndrome. But they're still edible. Food=/=infectable.

@@extremosaur the hunters part is not correct. They are resistant to the flood because it’s a wriggling mass of worms. The flood can only infect one worm at a time and when it’s compromised the hive removes them.

Im curious as to the actual incompetence of grunts. Afterall when the Elites in halo 2 went to kill the heretic. They took grunts with them and they, for the most part , remained respectfully silent during the that little motto recital the Elites had
@@QueenTheCossackTongued IIRC, before the original Halo activation and reseeding of the galaxy, Grunts were pretty technologically advanced and had achieved space travel. But in their extremely fast scientific progress, they totally ruined their planet's atmosphere and stripped it of resources. So when all the races were reseeded on their homeworlds, the Grunts had nothing to work with and were stuck in a pre-industrial state when the Covenant found them. Then Covenant culture treats them as third class citizens and cannon fodder, coupled with their extreme rate of reproduction, it makes sense that they have so little regard for their own safety. I think they're less incompetent / stupid and more victims of their circumstances.

@@QueenTheCossackTongued I think the first rebellion was when they were glassed into submission, although there were like 15 rebellions and "start glassing the homeworld" was probably used as an answer more than once lol. And after that first rebellion they won the respect of the Elites who saw them as warriors, and championed their right to bear arms and serve the Covenant on the battlefield. Which is why a classic squad is 1 Elite leading a bunch of Grunts.

@@starblast-2246 If you go by the lore, the flood will infect anything with sufficient biomass and advanced enough neuro-pathways (a high enough sentience). Its the reason why you don't often find livestock as warrior forms, even if it would absorb it for the biomass.
Also, to be fair, the grunts were a force to be reckoned with when they rebelled against the covenant. And they damn near almost won too! It took alot of fire power and an arbiter to put a stop to their rampage. So in proper coordination and numbers, they can be very dangerous by themselves.
When I was playing the game I thought that the flood didn't take the grunts because the grunts needed a special system to breath. A system that would be destroyed with the mutations. So a combat form grunt with no methane would die very quickly. But then flood grunts are in halo wars so aw well

Also another thing to think about, the infected grunts may carry plasma grenades which they could use to kill the enemy, either by throwing or by having the grunt run into a group of enemies and detonate, much like in the games. They are small enough to be effective at dodging a few bullets in order to get to the victims location in an operational state.

They actually can breathe oxygen, they just fight high, this was a fail from someone who considers himself a halo expert.
The grunts could probably survive for a limited amount of time but would suffocate in a realistic scenario. The games cant be that realistic though.

I always thought grunts were immune to the flood due to their tough and rugged frame, since grunts are naturally tough because of their homeworlds harsh terrain/conditions, I always thought it would be hard for infection forms to enter...even without their armor

The little feelers on the Flood infection forms are covered in basically really small REALLY sharp blades, they cut like diamonds. They shred though armor.

Probably via flood whip scratches or bites. There are parasites that feed on dense whale bones in the sea, i think the flood whip with its boney look could atleast scratch deep enough to start a infection.
They may not have a spinal column, but they do still have a nervous system, which is all a flood needs to infect a host (and sentience).
Grunts are probably not really 5 feet tall unless you're counting the giant backpack they're wearing, which you shouldn't.

As a kid I felt so bad for the grunts, the way the got so spooked when they seen chief roll up. As an adult I feel even worse for them knowing that they are forced into their position. I think humans and grunts could have a pretty nice friendship in another timeline.

It's not too far-fetched to think that the Covenant would outfit them with anti-flood armor. Flood attack in swarms and so do the grunts. It makes sense they would actually be pretty dangerous cannon fodder when tons of them are exposed to the Flood, swelling the number of combat forms during an outbreak.

So we do see infected grunts in Halo 1 - 3, the carrier forms.
My buddy told me (while we were doing a Legendary run of Halo CE) that the Flood doesn't usually go after grunts for combat forms because they don't have quite the right specs that the flood typically likes in combat forms. Hence why the flood goes after Humans and Elites mostly, though I believe Flood Brutes do exist.

Well, I know it is four months late, but I'll answer. The corpses' nervous systems were likely too damaged before death for the flood to be able to use them.

But infected humans exist.... A grunt should have significantly more biomass than a human. At 5 1/2 feet, a grunt is almost as tall as a human, but way beefier. A grunt likely has atleast double the biomass of a marine
at roughly 5 ft 3 a grunt is about the size of a fully formed child.
grunts are also disproportionate to humans such as their thin upper arm and leg joints and their lower torso, a grunt is more like a child that hasn't eaten well for a few months so therefore no, not enough and definitely not "significantly more". as the OP is based on - biomass and a combat form are different.

Grunts are the ultimate double edged sword. They can reproduce quickly and thus be a consistent base for soldiers but also consistent source for infection by the flood.

There was sound files in Halo 2 and 3 of grunts turning into flood, they just never finished the new forms due to time constraints or they just didn't like it. You gotta remember that its just a game, not everything is done because of lore reasons, it looks like from the game files that grunts do indeed turn into flood, they just never finished the models for them.
