- Exploring less well known places in Scotland. This week we're off to the Midlothian town of Penicuik, which nestles at the foot of the Pentland hills about half an hour from Edinburgh.
We explore a Iron Age hill fort, the ruins of a massive mansion house and check out the town's historic old graveyard.
We also find out that the inhabitants of Castlelaw Hill Fort weren't as tall as Dizzy...
A huge thank you to everyone who's supported our wee channel so far, if you'd like to help support our wee adventures you can do it through through our Ko-Fi or Patreon.
All our videos are hand made from 100% organic ingredients ;). Our content is mostly filmed on a GoPro 11 with a Rode fluffy microphone to keep the wind noise down, with occasional bits on an iPhone13. We also use a DJI Mini 3 drone which we're loving getting to grips with.
We make our own music using GarageBand and the videos are edited in iMovie.
If you'd like to buy DeNiro a biscuit (and he's a good boy, honest) you can via our Ko-Fi link at www.ko-fi.com/ScotlandOnAShoes....
If you'd like to become a patron of our wee channel we also have a patreon at / scotlandonashoestring
We also have an Etsy shop where we sell some of our hand made items. It's at dandbbythesea.etsy.com
Brilliant video of Penicuik! I’m the local Councillor here, much of the town is currently undergoing heritage regeneration, and the churchyard is part of it. The hearse house next to the church yard is going to become a heritage centre. Hope you enjoyed your time in Penicuik!
Bex is from there so we visit most weeks.
I’m being a broken record again…awesome drone footage! Ouch! I actually felt that one 🤕 Beautiful countryside! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us! 👍🏼
As always.. thank you so much for the support :)
We visited Penicuik on one of our Edinburgh trips. We can confirm that we struggled to find anything much to do in the town too! Even in August!
We loved New Lanark. That's definitely worth a visit.
We'll be back at New Lanark soon I hope, really interesting place.
That was a perfectly lovely visit to a town with nothing to see. 😂😉 Your commentary brought a smile to my face from the beginning to the end, so thank you very much for that, Iain. I particularly needed it today. 🥰 I'm looking forward to catching up on your older videos. See you again soon. 😁🤗💖👍👋
Glad we could brighten your day. Hope you enjoy our weekend explores.
There's always something to see! Great video!
Absolutely, there always is if you look!
Quite a house! I do genealogy searches, I love the old graveyards and cemeteries.Thank you for the tours!
You're welcome. Those old stones are a genealogists dream.
That drone footage of the house was really interesting! Greetings from Wisconsin, USA!
Thank you!! It’s a fascinating place.
Dan and co. of Escape to rural France is rebuilding a chateau. Currently has some floors in and is working on part of the roof. Fascinating to see a shell of a building being made whole again.
Just checked that out, looks like a bit of a challenge for them :)
Penicuik is my home town. We used to live by the "Targets" on Pomathorn Lane, ar the foot of Uttershill. I used to play in the ruined castle at the top.
Oooh.. ruined castle….
@@scotlandonashoestring Apparently it was a manor house, but it was like a keep, and very ruined. Right on the Esk before it headed for the paper mill.
The Targets was interesting too, the army used the area as a shooting range and we found spent bullets.
Despite the mud … this looks like a nice day out to me 😊 Great views!
It was!
You always make a place interesting. Shame the estate burned out. Looked like a beautiful structure.
The graveyard was nice. It's good that sinking is being addressed
Like the tartan runner pants.
Enjoy your week you too ❤
Thanks 👍
As alway I love all the drone footage and the beautiful architecture and any cemeteries. As for you talking to fast when you get excited I can still understand everything you are saying. I hope you all have a blessed week.
I'm glad people can still understand me. I've tried different speeds but they always end up right back where they started.

Beautiful episode 💜 thank you all very much! Be well, stay safe all.😮😊🥰💞👍
Thank you! You too!
Love your drone footage! We are trying to get into using ours more this year. Sorry your parking situation was difficult haha that would be annoying. And all the fences.
Candice, Andrew & Riley 🐾
Hiya. We’re getting to grips with the drone, still forget to press record far too often though :)
Very cool
Thanks.
Park run in South Africa too 😉🇿🇦🏴
Yep, I forgot a few places :))
What a great bit of nothing to see! Thanks for including some more park run footage...I'm always curious about that part but you hardly ever show much 🩷
We’re never sure about how much parkrun to include, still figuring out what you lot want :))
What would be a good way for those building blocks to be cleaned? A light pressure wash and light scrub maybe?
Possibly, nothing too abrasive.
I don't have that issue with my head as mine is much closer to the ground lol. What a stunning house, amazing views too. Such a shame to see it empty like that.
The house is awesome, the banging the head less so :)
@@scotlandonashoestring I'd have loved to have seen it in all its glory. Haha no I imagine not. There is a bonus to being only 5ft lol
I wonder what happened to the son who died in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. That's not far from me (by American standards - about 3 hrs). I'm not sure when Colorado Springs was founded, but Fort Collins where I live was in it's early days then. Still quite Wild West. Ah, it looks like C.S. was already around for about 50 yrs by the time that person died. It was a popular spot for British tourists. Interesting!
I bet there could be an interesting story there. Off to America to make his fortune
Shame about the beautiful house. Another great graveyard. I was home in Clackmannanshire last week and when I got back to Kent no-one knew what I was saying ha ha.
Hahaha. I’m like that when I work in Manchester, takes a day to slow down enough for people to understand.
Just checked if our city has a Park Run and we do.(Kelowna British Columbia,Canada) 😊Went right over and subcribed to your other channel
Awesome! Thank you!
I've been to Castlelaw, and Old Penicuik House.
The house is amazing, hopefully it'll be open again soon.
@@scotlandonashoestring I was lucky enough to get inside the house, when I visited. It's worth it
Yeah, we’ve been in before but alas before our YT days. Hopefully they’ll have it sorted and back open again soon.
@@scotlandonashoestring I hope that you get back inside the house, for a revisit.
Mind yer heed!🤕
Too late!! Ouch
