This fun coffee table design opens up to reveal a shallow compartment perfect for puzzles and board games. But each flip side also has its own built in game board! One side is tic tac toe and one side is checkers/chess.

ABOUT THE HINGES: Instead of butt hinges, you could instead use surface hinges like this: amzn.to/3QwXim4
I didn't like this option because I didn't want to see them on the top. However they do provide a flush surface, so they have their pros and cons. There are multiple ways to hinge the top, so feel free to use your preferred method. I preferred butt hinges for simplicity (and no additional tools required).

That table is awesome! To get an even more crisp line when it comes to staining, I recommend gel stain, it acts more like a paint and doesn't seep under the tape much, if at all. I use it on cornhole boards and it's amazing.
Thanks so much! That's a great suggestion. Have you ever used water based stain? I feel like gel stain and water based stains are pretty similar. They're both much thicker than oil based and they kind of "smear on" vs soak in. The water based stains here had like ZERO bleed through. I was pretty impressed.

I really like your table. A couple of years ago I built my first table. The frame is cedar and I used a hobby sheet for the top. What I did was make a lego table for my grand kids. I simply built the frame and put a bottom on the frame, I cut out a hand hold on each of the end frames. I made it so the top would be level with the frame but sit inside the frame. I glued the lego base mats on one side of the top and use the other side as a coffee table. All I have to do is lift the top out and flip it over. All the legos are stored inside the table.

Wow. So, if this doesn't silence the critics who claim that elegant, sophisticated furniture can't be created with basic materials, then they are just denying the evidence of their eyes. No wonder you have been excited to share this piece... it's a pièce de résistance! I could have sworn, when you were teasing this on IG, that this was made of high-dollar hardwoods... I should have had faith in your abilities with plywood and pocket holes! One Italian chef's kiss from me. Beautiful. P.S. remember last video's "oh no" moment? Yeah, you might want to go look up the one about repeating a behavior and expecting a different result... 😉🤣😂😁
I fear the critics will never be silenced 🤣 but that’s okay. I’d still take my plywood and pocket holes any day just to tick them off a little more ha! Seriously though, thank you for the kind words. I’m glad I was able to “fool you” into thinking I used something fancy and it was just plywood 😉 never underestimate a good sheet of birch!
Also…you are confirming my suspicion that I might actually be insane based on definition. I’ll give myself one more chance to learn my lesson before calling it 😆

Another great project Shara. This can be used in so many areas of your home. Love the stain color. The X's and O's could also be done with stencils, would have to be careful when painting the pieces. Hope you're having a great weekend. Steve

wonderful build. I just want to to something like that on my dinner table.
I think having the top supports on when you traced the notch cutouts for the bottom shelf may have helped with stability and precision of the notches. It may have helped maybe not, however either way should work fine enough 😊 Great video!

Would you make recommendations on what jigsaw blade you use? Your lack of tear out is first rate.
I use Diablo brand blades. For plywood I use fine finish blades

Omg I love this! My sister sent me your pin on Pinterest. I will probably turn this into a dining table because we have limited space. Any tips for center support?
Thank you! You could split the drawers into two or three depending on the size table you’re making and add supports as dividers between them.
I'm always surprised how much mileage you get out of the Kreg rip cut jig. I like it and it works, but man, a small amount of twist at the blade, and the edge guide will go unsquare from the edge and just be fine with that, but, it's kind of the point for it to stay square to the edge so the cut stays square 😅 I pretty much use it for rough cuts to a size I can lift and then do the real cut on the table saw. Any tips for keeping it aligned?
I love my rip cut and use it for final cuts for basically every project. I think you have to learn your tools-their strengths and weaknesses and how to handle them. And starting and ending are the weakest parts of the rip cut. Those are the areas most prone to error if not careful. That’s where you as the human have to help it compensate. Ensuring the guide is square to the blade is important (like the saw isn’t in the sled crooked). Making sure to use a good blade (this is often overlooked but makes a huge difference in cut quality). Also going slow and paying attention at the beginning and the end so that the guide is completely flat against the wood. I mean it’s obvious, but I don’t have any “tricks” really. I just pay extra attention to keep it flat and go slow at the start and the end

Thank you! Ripping is cutting with (parallel to) the wood grain. Cross cutting is cutting across the wood grain.

Ahaha you know…I wouldn’t have thought about pets ruining a puzzle but now that you mention it, that doesn’t surprise me at all 🙈😆
@WoodshopDiaries yeah, I had a puzzle on foam core on a table smaller than the foam core. My cat jumped on the table and flipped the entire puzzle on the floor. Now I cover the puzzle with a second piece of foam core and use binder clips to secure the foam core pieces together. A puzzle sandwich. And lesson learned. Don't leave it on a table smaller than the foam core. It works great. Of course, it's not an elegant solution like your table.

Hey, newbie woodworker here, just one quick question.. how do you account for wood movement? I read that pocket holes prevent wood movement and the wood will then crack over time..
With plywood, it’s really not a concern

Hi thanks so much! 🙌 I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I just used regular old construction grade 2x4s ripped in half for the legs. I believe the “flavor” of the month at the store when I got these was fir since they do have a red tint. Usually the 2x4s around here are pine or spruce. But every now and then they’re fir.

No complaints, but I wondered about other options for the hinges before you mentioned it... I'm normally a complainer 😂😂😂
Also I know this video was used to demonstrate the Cricket which you did nicely, most could be done with masking. I found the iron on transfer interesting though. Thanks for another entertaining project. What a great way to start a Saturday!
Haha! I actually linked an alternative hinge option in the video description that I ALMOST opted for, but decided against because I didn't like the look. But, there are tons of other options out there.
Yes, this application is made much quicker and more accurate with the Cricut, but could be done other ways, too. This project barely scratched the surface of the potential of the machine and the software. It's a very versatile addition to the shop. Glad you enjoyed the video and I appreciate you watching.
