I never stop being amazed at how beautifully diverse France is, and I'm just referring to continental France alone. Towns in the southeast and the south near Italy and the Mediterranean look so different from towns in the northwest (Brittany), which look so different from towns in the northeast near Germany (Alsace), which look so different from towns in the southwestern corner near Spain (French Basque Country), which look so different to towns in the northern tip near Belgium (French Flanders, Artois), which look so different from towns in the Alps, which looks so different to towns in the Loire Valley or even towns along the Tarn and near Toulouse. The general aspect, often resulting from things like building materials, roof styles, and colorful facades versus monochrome facades, is what I think changes a lot in France from a small geographic area to another. And of course it's by looking at the villages and small towns like Cotignac where you'll notice that regional character the most.
