I remember a while ago a lot of people said there would never be a Dark type gym, because dark type pokemon use underhanded and even dishonourable tactics to fight and when you examine the dark type moves they have a point, EVERY dark type move isn't some straight forward attack, all of them have an added effect on to them that can really mess with a pokemon's means of performing.
Yet not only do we finally have a dark type gym after so many years we have one that prefers the normal way of fighting and not dynamaxing, along with the one who put his reputation as a gym leader at risk defying the chairman of the region and even ran around the entire Galar region with Hop and the MC to stop the rampaging dynamax pokemon in every city.
All that and to top it off he went out of his way to catch a Morpeko, a pokemon that his scared, frail, younger sister loved.
Piers shows just because you're a dark type user doesn't mean you're a dark-minded person.
This is exactly why he’s the best gym-leader in the series
Well, there was a dark gym leader planned for Johto, but got scrapped for some unknown, to me, reason. If anyone knows why, tell me please.
Dark types aren't inherently evil, at least in my mind they aren't. I don't think of Dark types as evil or bad spirited, I think of Dark types as Pokemon who use any tactic they can because they realize it's more efficient to use all of their tools and their brain instead of following some code of honor that isn't even enforced.

If someone says dark type Pokémon are all bad, look at Absol - the poor guy comes down from the mountains to warn the people of bad weather, and they all panic like it’s satan
Pretty cool that they gave all this attention to the first dark type gym leader. It took over 23 years after all.

actually it "only" took 20 years, since the dark type was introduced in 1999 when gold and silver were first released. still a long time tho xd
On the 20th anniversary of the dark type we finally get a gym leader. How fitting
Mr. R not to make this achieve any longer but what about the dark type kahuna for Pokémon s/m and us/um. Nanu, I believe his was, was definitely heavily focused on dark type Pokémon. I don’t think it’s fair to say this is as grand as it should with Nanu existing in the picture

Not even the Eighth gym leader...has more pokemon than Raihan...has his own theme...is the only dark type gym leader in 23 years of pokemon...has mostly gen 5 pokemon...I'm sold.

At the sight of you, the music playing in the background immediately fades away. A dreadful screech was amplified through the speakers and the whole crowd turned around looked at you. "So a challenger finally showed up, huh? I'm... not a good gym leader... You can't even Dynamax in my stadium... But I hope you enjoy the battle anyway." The crowd of grunts rushed to the sidelines to get ready to watch the Gym Battle. "Now then... No more time for introductions..." The Gym Leader closed his eyes as if he was bracing himself for the battle of his life. Suddenly a jolt of energy shot through him. "I'm Piers, the Dark Type User! You wanna challenge me?! Hopeless. Prepare for a mosh pit with me and my Pokemon! Spikemuth, It's time to rock!!!" A gray text box appeared in front of you, displaying the most intimidating words you have ever set eyes upon, "You are challenged by Gym Leader Piers!"_

Reasons to love Piers:
- first dark type gym leader
- unique theme from other gym leaders
- kickass theme
- doesn't need Dynamaxing to kick your ass
- is good brother
- an actual challenge (despite literally telling you his tactics for all his Pokémon)
- helps you in post-game
- is the third strongest trainer in Galar (before you start your journey), and again, WITHOUT Dynamaxing

Piers is by far one of the most memorable characters for me. I love his desire to prove how you don't need Dynamax to win. A good message.
I seriously think Piers is one of the best characters Pokémon has ever had, up there with N, Blue and Cynthia. He also has an awesome design, battle concept, area... hell, everything Piers-related is awesome.
Say what you want about Sw/Sh, but it gave us the best set of Gym Leaders in the series yet.

Literally my favourite character. He’s got on of the coolest designs I’ve ever seen in a Pokemon game, he’s was actually the hardest gym to take down (in my play through) and I love relating to how he tries to keep up a persona while also caring deeply for his sister
Also Pokemon needs to stop with these extremely attractive characters, it’s too much for my weeb heart to handle

Piers' design and theme are hype, but look at his team! So diverse and I love it.
I wont lie, he did give me slight trouble but I managed to beat on my first playthrough. Still had a blast though

I somehow sweeped his whole team with an underleveled spritzee in Shield, but in sword it was a lot harder
I feel like piers should have been the last gym leader, because I think that the one gym leader that doesn't use dynamaxing to be the most powerful is a cool idea
Kinda ironic he was second to last, right behind Raihan who is all about the dynamax thing.
We always get the spike of the story before the last gym.
There was probably something GF wanted to give us but they couldn't.
Maybe his strength explains why he was with us at the end game quest?
Not only that, but he treats ALL of his Pokemon equally. Each of his Pokemon had a unique role on his team, not just his ace like practically everyone else

@@potentdelirium He's even stated to be a powerhouse even without Dynamaxing, as he nearly won against Raihan in a tournament, who only won because he did Dynamax. In a straight fight, he could probably put up a hard battle for Leon, even with a mono-type team.

Honestly the battle against Piers was the most intense Gym Battle. I was raising a Wooloo to beat Leon's Charizard, and he went up against Piers's Obstagoon. He won, but not without a fight. It was probably my favorite battle of the playthrough (especially because Leon's Charizard was really beaten by a Stone Edge trap from my Coalossal combined with a lucky Electro Ball from Wooloo).
I love that Piers' whole style and theme is intimidating, but he's actually a sweetheart lol. Same can be said about a lot of rock/metalheads tho, so they got that accurate

I’m someone who made sure to prep before the champion fight specifically so I could one-shot Leon’s charizard with a max-rockfall.
The gym leader who has his own unique battle theme from the others, he was a REALLY good character for Sword and Shield, especially his theme!

I think he valued his Skuntank's Toxic/Sucker Punch combo because if you're badly poisoned, you won't want to waste time on a setup move. That way you're incentive is to be more offensive, which plays into Sucker Punch. That and his Skuntank probably also had Stench. So he's also hoping for a priority flinch to go with that badly poisoned damage.
Edit: I checked, it has Aftermath in the initial gym battle and Piers doesn't swap it out later for Stench.
It's the same way Hop's Wooloo should have had Fluffy. Pokemon needs hard modes to change this stuff.
