Exactlyyyyyyy I'm a new artist and what I found to be wrong with the loomis method is just that - the realism. When I first started, I realized that I never really knew how to draw heads. I was watching one of PewDiePie's "drawing for X days" videos and he mentioned some Korean youtuber who does tutorials. So I looked him up, followed one of his tutorials and vois la, that was the first thing I've ever drawn in a sketchbook. That tutorial was based on the loomis method. Then when I actually started drawing things I wanted to draw, specifically cartoon characters, I tried applying the method to cartoon faces from reference only to get frustrated. as a beginner, it's exciting to learn some methods masters use when drawing/constructing faces and other human body parts. For me, the idea of knowing these methods is to understand the landmark and a base to measure the proportion. I really hope to see the full tutorial of this method! ^^
I think the problem (starting at 4:00) lies with these tutorials only teaching the basics of the Loomis Method. You can find thousands of videos on the Loomis Method, but they're all the same. Even the so-called 'in-depth' ones just teach how to draw the 'default' human head, without demonstrating its flexibility. As a result, people encounter difficulties because they’re limited to what they’ve been taught, believing that nothing beyond a 'perfect' human head can be drawn. In his book Drawing the Head and Hands, Loomis, on pages 36 to 40, shows how to draw heads with different shapes, sizes, and proportions simply by adjusting the lines (brow line, nose line, hairline, etc.). I’ve personally drawn heads with bizarre proportions using the Loomis Method in my practice sessions, and I’ve even copied portraits of people. The key is identifying the facial landmarks and adjusting the lines accordingly. We don’t need yet another video teaching the Loomis Method; we have plenty of those already. What we really need are videos that explore the flexibility of the Loomis Method, challenging beginners to create heads in various shapes and sizes.
Suppose that you were sitting down at this table. The napkins are in front of you, which napkin would you take? The one on your ‘left’? Or the one on your ‘right’? The one on your left side? Or the one on your right side? Usually you would take the one on your left side. That is ‘correct’ too. But in a larger sense on society, that is wrong. Perhaps I could even substitute ‘society’ with the ‘Universe’. The correct answer is that ‘It is determined by the one who takes his or her own napkin first.’ ...Yes? If the first one takes the napkin to their right, then there’s no choice but for others to also take the ‘right’ napkin. The same goes for the left. Everyone else will take the napkin to their left, because they have no other option. This is ‘society’... Who are the ones that determine the price of land first? There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role... Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the ‘losers’. In the case of this table, the ‘eldest’ or the ‘Master of the party’ will take the napkin first... Because everyone ‘respects’ those individuals.
It's not that the Loomis method *is bad* ... It's how you *apply it!* When I was in college, we learned the loomis method and then learned how to apply it to our individual drawing style. (It's also very useful in animation, for maintaining continuity.) I (begrudgingly) learned it and have used it ever since. I say "begrudgingly" because, at first, I thought it was a whole lot of extra work that I didn't need to do. Later I found out that it was saving me time in the long run because I didn't have to keep going back and fixing my work. Now, I use it all the time!
The major lesson I learned from Loomis was simply that when drawing heads, you should conceive of them as 3D objects. e.g. for cartoony heads you can use an egg shape as base - but you should think of it as an egg shape, not a flat oval, with contour lines running around it (which greatly help with foreshortening, and with preventing you from misaligning features like eyes). I find it is useful to think in this way even when drawing a portrait from a reference photo.
I'd love a video on the Loomis method - I practiced along with your last video and it was so helpful. I like to view it as a tool, I guess like what you say in the video, something that is supposed to work for you, your way & just playing with it as a guideline I was able to get lots of different looks, that I customized to work for me. So an in-depth tutorial would be super cool to me - I understand if it won't happen tho if that's not the majority vote. I'm just of the opinion that more tools can't hurt the artist. Btw, the irony of using Tom Cruise as an example of perfect proportions & meanwhile his famous teeth - just makes it all the more true, no one is an exactly perfect model. Thanks Marcel for your videos - I wasn't challenged to grow my art style in over a decade, I just got complacent until recently I began experimenting again & finding your vids was one of the best things to happen for me. Every time I watch one I leave with a great refresher, a knew outlook, some gaps filled in for my foundation that I just never got around to learning & ALWAYS inspired. No joke, my art improves noticeably after every view. Already pre-ordered your book, can't wait! Was able to read the introduction in preview & I loved what you had to say - keep being you ✌🏻💚
also yes i'd love a tutorial on all the common methods of drawing faces, including Loomis. That way I can try each of them out with your video and see which i like best :)
I try both drawing and sculpting over the Loomis method and it works wonder. Of course it has to be adjusted for each individual but it's easy because with sculpting you are forced to master the geometry and anatomy. Transition to any other style becomes much easier
Good you mentioned that. I was stille experimentating with this method and you defenetly avoidet me some trouble. You mentioned it that it is for realistic proportions but tryed it anyway on anime XD
I think it would be cool to see an alternative to Loomis' method. I've seen a bunch of tutorials on it but, when it comes to anything else, they're like 'figure it out. IDK.' By the way, great video. You always make me laugh, Mariachi
i've never really used the loomis method, i've seen it and i know about it but i feel like you can get by just doing the two eggs method and dividing up the face with specific values and anything that falls out of line with those are considered bigger or lesser jaw or more eyes wideset or narrow or longer mid face etc. those face values are pretty easy though, it just takes a little memorization and you don't really have to really follow them that strictly which is a plus and it just generates pretty believable faces. the reason for the two egg shapes is one for the length of the face vertical and the other is the length of the skull in profile as a skull is not a circle it's a bit oblong, but you do have to kind of observe faces to understand that not every skull is exactly that, some have rounder faces, some have more square faces, some have more triangular faces but you can use your basic understanding of how to measure out a face so it doesn't look too cartoonish but yeah some people have really interesting skull shapes and faces almost bordering on cartoonish. but yeah i think you showed pretty much the issue with the loomis method when you did that side profile view and how awkwardly small the skull became in contrast to the face because you just used a circle, i used to have that issue of too small of a skull just drawing a circle and a center line past the circle to basically an arbitrary length to put the chin.
tbh i like how bridgeman suggests to draw the head. Just start with a square, attach some skull bits/face bits. I think what I use is an amalgamation of what i recently memorized from bridgman and an old and totally legit digital class from Scott Eaton. I find it much more specific and hence harder to get wrong than the loomis method, and I find memorizing the skull underneath helps tons! the more you understand the anatomy underneath, the more you can morph the face around it, i suppose, whether you're shooting for something realistic or otherwise. Sameskull syndrome is many times worse than sameface syndrome! the skull is the foundation of the face!

Full loomis method tutorial. YES PLEASE
It's not that the Loomis method *is bad* ...
It's how you *apply it!*
When I was in college, we learned the loomis method and then learned how to apply it to our individual drawing style.
(It's also very useful in animation, for maintaining continuity.)
I (begrudgingly) learned it and have used it ever since.
I say "begrudgingly" because, at first, I thought it was a whole lot of extra work that I didn't need to do.
Later I found out that it was saving me time in the long run because I didn't have to keep going back and fixing my work.
Now, I use it all the time!
PLEASE LOOMIS METHOD VIDEO PLEASE IVE BEEN STRUGGLING WITH DRAWING HEADS MY ENTIRE LIFE AHHHHHH love your vids man keep being awesome
Thx a lot Mario 😃😃
why there is still so many people doesn't know Marcels name?
The major lesson I learned from Loomis was simply that when drawing heads, you should conceive of them as 3D objects. e.g. for cartoony heads you can use an egg shape as base - but you should think of it as an egg shape, not a flat oval, with contour lines running around it (which greatly help with foreshortening, and with preventing you from misaligning features like eyes). I find it is useful to think in this way even when drawing a portrait from a reference photo.
Can you please make a video on landscape
Was able to read the introduction in preview & I loved what you had to say - keep being you ✌🏻💚
IS THAT A JOJO REFERENCE?!!! 2:24 (I was looking for that guy that yells it but i guess i'll be the substitute)

yes make a full tutorial on Loomis method Thank you!
Great video!
Everyone would love a full tutorial on the Loomis method.
PS: The videos on the second channel are really nice
Thanks, Ma... Ma... Marcel
THANK YOU SO MUCH FATHER MATRIN, THIS SOLVED 50% OF MY PROBLEMS!!
Malnutrition forever pumping out quality stuff 🔥
Yes please make a tutorial about loomis method. Also what kind of guideline would be best to use for stylized faces like in anime?
Marcel this video has helped me more than you know
Thx for the tutorial, Morpheus!
I try both drawing and sculpting over the Loomis method and it works wonder. Of course it has to be adjusted for each individual but it's easy because with sculpting you are forced to master the geometry and anatomy. Transition to any other style becomes much easier
yes i would like a full video on the loomis please and manga .
See this video made me pretty happy to see that I have been applying the Loomis Method correctly
Complete tutorial would be nice. Good job Malenia Blade of Miquella
Yes I need a video with that method
Good you mentioned that. I was stille experimentating with this method and you defenetly avoidet me some trouble. You mentioned it that it is for realistic proportions but tryed it anyway on anime XD
While I don’t use the Loomis method myself, this is useful info. Thanks.
yes plz. A full tutorial would be great!
Yes please. It would be great if you could do a full tutorial on the Loomis method.
Nice work Marie!
You are god for me. You taught me everything, EVERYTHING.
I absolutely love your videos Michael! It’s so satisfying watching all the pencil work 🤤
I think it would be cool to see an alternative to Loomis' method.
I'm starting to use boxes and half cylinders now, it actually helps with stylized faces, but, you still need a circle.
tbh i like how bridgeman suggests to draw the head.
