We all won by hearin' this epic cuttin' contest. No fight just time that's right! If an eye for an eye makes the world blind, then a solo for a solo makes our ears sublime!
Thank you, it was a unique moment, 16 years ago. Fortunately, I had a videocamera, because smartphones didn't exist. Although TH-cam is decreasing this video quality over the years.
Sean Jones told someone he plays on a Bach 1/4 Mouthpiece which is huge, and requires great embouchure strength and training compared to what most legit players use. He could play a Pringle can and probably still sound amazing
That guy is Sean Jones. First trumpet in Wynton Marsalis's big band and professor of jazz studies at Duquesne University. I don't know what you're hearing, but he's playing beautifully.
My unimportant but valid opinion is that they can go ahead and show off. Trumpeters have played on the tradition of duking it out ever since King Oliver in new Orleans... Plus I can't do that... and it sure looks like fun!
Well, I must say thanks a lot to them to let me post this video -or not complaint about it- I think this performance is very useful to have more jazz fans.
Sometimes, you just got to air it out on trumpet. All of those hours in the practice room............whew! These guys are having fun and the crowd is diggin' it, too! I'd like to attend such an event! Maybe, I'll return to MY woodshed!
Actually I know both of them, and the comment wasn't to bad mouth Marcus Printup because he is a fantastic trumpet player. As a musician that plays jazz, sometimes when you get on stage in a situation like this you get "owned" or "destroyed" by your friends that are on stage with you. All it does (at least for me) is motivate me to practice harder so that I can play better. So don't take the comment as a negative to anyone as that's not what it was meant to be.
Awesome...I have performed with Marcus before. Marcus is so awesome. Great guy with an amazing attitude. He taught a clinic at Clemson when I was there.
I agree. I was just telling a buddy of mine while we were watching this clip that it starts out real nice, and jones plays some really great stuff harmonically, and then it progressively turns into a battle to see whose balls are bigger. Def gets old. I do like how jones keeps bring the sould back throughout though, he can really play-they both can, but sean is really killin.
I remember those great sessions at Bliss Hall with Sean and Alton. They are absolutely ridiculous together. Hey Sean, whatever happened to Brian Connell the saxist? Anyway, the most important thing is that they honor The Most High with their gifts and talent. I've always said that Sean is one of the "coldest" of our generation. Keep it up Sean.
The other player is Marcus Printup. He's been swingin with Lincoln Center for over 15 years now. Check out some of his stuff. He's a dangerous man with that horn
No, I am talking about Lincoln Center. Sean is indeed lead trumpet. This, however, is not a soloist chair. The white guy you saw playing the solos is most likely Ryan Kisor.
if anyone could hit these notes, this wouldnt be so special. it isnt even about how high they are playing, its about the lines. even an octave down, 99 percent of trumpet players couldnt do that shit.
hey music and performance happens one lots of levels. Enrgy being one of the most important! Nothing wrong with every now and then having fun like this, it;s great. These guys greated alot of energy that wouldn't have been there had they not been trading. They probably made the rythmn section play with more energy too.
Sean Jones is incredible. I don't think I have ever heard anyone lip trill the fast and that clean (2:08) Marcus Printup is awesome too. You have to be to be in the LCJO. From what i've read Sean Jones is the latest addition.
Please, guys, good manners. This was a concert we didn't pay for it. They were playing completely in a free way, the most important thing is to enjoy it. The main concert that day, in a big venue, was completely different, much closer to jazz rules.
Marcus Printup is a great trumpet player, but Sean Jones just destroyed him here. What amazing control of the trumpet by Sean Jones as well as musicality.
also, my favorite sax player is cannonball adderley (im a saax player) so if you here some of his stuff you'll see the type of style i'm into. they looked like they didn't want to hug at the end... pretty sure they were trying to outdo each other on the high end...
Eyyy man !!! Xao
Not that I disagree with you, because I feel what you're saying. I'm a trumpet player and there is a certain ego that goes along with playing high notes. However, in this instance, they're both doing it because the other player is. They're just trading back and forth at a VERY high energy level. I don't believe they're trying to outdo eachother, I think they're trying to compliment eachother's playing.
Hey All, Great Improv , great playin, check out Trombone Shorty (I think the name is correct) and Wynton Marsalis duel it out, very hott! It takes talent and passion to play and keep it in the groove! A lot a great Self Expression and passion!
first off no one won they were doing what jazz people do, play and have fun. Now if they had to compete sean jones did win. marcus is bad as hell trust me. i've heard his play some very nice licks. i love jazz.
They are not "fighting". They are best buddies and both hold their own in terms of musical and trumpet ability. Anyone who says that either of them were "destroyed" or "owned" clearly does not know them.
sure they're just playing a lot of high licks to fight eachother and show off, but the guy in white for sure is a superb player. not sure how he can play swinging all around like that though lol
Clearly your not a jazz player. This is not a battle at all, they are only trading fours, back and forth and having fun. Has nothing to do with showing off, and by the way, they are both highly regarded and famous trumpet players who have more experience under there belt than anyone you’ve probably ever listened to, and are both members of the famous Lincoln Center Jazz orchestra, they are both high note specialists, outstandingly capable lead players, and beyond experts at jazz improvisation, your welcome. Player in the white shirt is Sean Jones, the other is Marcus Printup.
@@timeisnow4116 Hello 14 years since my comment you are responding to - I was a bit younger then, and I'll give you that :) They are both excellent players and I would not say one is obviously better than the other. I actually was a jazz player and think they are both significantly better than I ever was at soloing. Nonetheless, this is a classic example of starting a solo with the denouement. You have to be Maynard or Arturo to pull that off, and this is a bit of a mess with their unfinished thoughts as the turn comes up more rapidly than they realize. Listen to Basie's "four for basie" on Swing Shift to hear a more thoughtful progression in solo excitement for the listener. It's obvious these two had a blast though!
Hey man, not to cfrate an argument, but I AM a jazz trumpet player, have studied /transcribed the greats from clifford to dizzy to woody, and current stuff dave douglas, alex sipiagin, etc. And I accept that these guys have their shit together, no doubt. but this is always what happens at jam sessions- people just try and cut eachother (even if in fun) and the music goes out the window. Music is supposed to be a selfless, spiritual endeavor, not some bogus way of showing your a badass.
Well, in fact it was not "fighting", in the original languaje I speak -spanish- we say "duelo", that I think it means "duel". So It should say "trumpets duel" or so. It is clear they are friends, otherwise they didn't enjoy as they are.
Sean Jones is the next big thing. He is probably going to be the biggest star trumpet has ever seen. He can out play any one that is out there right now. ANYONE. He is better than Freddie, Clifford, and Faddis. Hands Down. If you do not see that, then you have not listened enough.
naw... if i am correct in the places that you say he running his fingers, he is quoting woody shaw licks. listen to some woody and tell me what you think.
one thing that annoys me by trumpet players is always trying to play higher then eachother... it gets old. i was at a jam session where this one player(very good player, gets mouthpieces especially made for him) he kept playing high. it's so annoying
I kind of agree, being a pro trumpet player myself. It could have done with (for me), a little more variation in timbre. They both sounded the same, all the time.
We all won by hearin' this epic cuttin' contest. No fight just time that's right!
If an eye for an eye makes the world blind, then a solo for a solo makes our ears sublime!
for sale: trumpet ...
I've probably watched this a hundred times over the years, still one of the cutting contest ever recorded.
This is so beautiful... Hats off to these two amazing trumpet players. :)
And both of them are great players. I just discovered Sean Jones and it has truly inspired me. Thanks Sean.
It appears Sean won that battle, although I've seen Marcus win those duels as well. The real winner, of course, was the audience.
The more I listen to this the more i hear, it's like infinite!! I love it Nimmer was cooking down there!! Jesus

I just saw Sean in person tonight. This guy is amazing.
I always come back to this video, the rawness of this is too beautiful. Gotta love live music! Even if it WAS recorded.
Sometimes, you just got to air it out on trumpet. All of those hours in the practice room............whew!
These guys are having fun and the crowd is diggin' it, too!
I'd like to attend such an event! Maybe, I'll return to MY woodshed!
I never want to battle Sean Jones in music.
Memories of Freddie and Lee, Night of the Cookers
that there put a shiver down my spine!brilliant
Actually I know both of them, and the comment wasn't to bad mouth Marcus Printup because he is a fantastic trumpet player. I didn't realize how huge Sean Jones is.
Professor Sean Jones and Dr Marcus Printup. This is as intense as Dr Donald Byrd and Booker Little album
woah both of them are great
I remember those great sessions at Bliss Hall with Sean and Alton. They are absolutely ridiculous together. Hey Sean, whatever happened to Brian Connell the saxist? Anyway, the most important thing is that they honor The Most High with their gifts and talent. I've always said that Sean is one of the "coldest" of our generation. Keep it up Sean.
holy shit! are they improvising the whole thing? wow. i wanna know who is who....
wow. that is absolutely amazing...
I love the video this is a old school jam session full of fun .
The other player is Marcus Printup. He's been swingin with Lincoln Center for over 15 years now. Check out some of his stuff. He's a dangerous man with that horn

You guys are awesome!
Were you not entertained? Well the audience was..lol..I'm a musician, ex trumpet player...Incredible fellas
Sean Jones is the man! Props to he other player too who held his own.
hey music and performance happens one lots of levels. Enrgy being one of the most important! Nothing wrong with every now and then having fun like this, it;s great. These guys greated alot of energy that wouldn't have been there had they not been trading. They probably made the rythmn section play with more energy too.
omg i wish i could play that high and that fast lol makes me look like a total beginner lol
wow... you guys are hilarious. Oh, killin' vid by the way.
muito show! e a citação de "Four" (Miles Davis) feita por Sean Jones foi fantástica! =D
Sean is the lead player, when he gets a sub (usually Brandon Lee) then Ryan plays lead and the sub plays Ryan's part.
Awesome man.... wow...great stuff.... thanks again..
Sean Jones is incredible. I don't think I have ever heard anyone lip trill the fast and that clean (2:08)
Marcus Printup is awesome too. You have to be to be in the LCJO. From what i've read Sean Jones is the latest addition.
What was that? Sicker than sick! in a good way. blown away
LOL...I found myself clapping at the end of the performance, while in my own home, in my room, on my computer. I was empressed.
Same brother, same 🤣
Great playing by both men!
Please, guys, good manners. This was a concert we didn't pay for it. They were playing completely in a free way, the most important thing is to enjoy it. The main concert that day, in a big venue, was completely different, much closer to jazz rules.
I`m sure that you have listen Arturo,Miles,King Oliver,Allen Vizutti,Bolden and many others.
Aside from living in Pittsburgh and knowing Sean, who told me himself, it is also on his website and the LCJO site.
Marcus Printup is a great trumpet player, but Sean Jones just destroyed him here. What amazing control of the trumpet by Sean Jones as well as musicality.

0:41 -> 0:45 He won the duel with that lick.
haha sean jones said he was really messed up during this
I think the quote sean plays is "Four" by miles.
Niiice. Never heard of these guys before but I'm gonna research them now... right now. *opens google*
Yea, sean, he's the bomb!
MY IDOLS!!!!!! damn... these guys are waaaaaaaaaaay to nice
FANTASTIC, I've got to practice a bit more I guess....
1:15 goes hard
so does 2:07 and 2:46, keeps going back to the blues
Eyyy man !!! Aqi se habla en español coño !!! viva la ñ !!! Yo estube alli presente cuando sucedio esa "batalla" y soy trompeta y amigo, wauuuuu !!!! Increible... vaya desacarga de adrenalina !!!! Sean might come out on top in a cutting session. But playing a slow blues I think printup would have the edge. These guys are just unbelievable!
Hey All,
Great Improv , great playin, check out Trombone Shorty (I think the name is correct) and Wynton Marsalis duel it out, very hott!
It takes talent and passion to play and keep it in the groove! A lot a great Self Expression and passion!
2 trumpet players killed it.
first off no one won they were doing what jazz people do, play and have fun. Now if they had to compete sean jones did win. marcus is bad as hell trust me. i've heard his play some very nice licks. i love jazz.
Aye man, put me on some jazz? ...I be looking for good jazz ...who are some good jazz trumpet players?
They are not "fighting". They are best buddies and both hold their own in terms of musical and trumpet ability. Anyone who says that either of them were "destroyed" or "owned" clearly does not know them.
@samtrumpdotnet. Yes it is. Sounding nice as usual.
Sean got him here...
By the way... who is that guy in white shirt? he is good man
I can't beat Wynton Marsalis in a classical trumpet battle, so I believe you. Pifff lol. hahaha
sure they're just playing a lot of high licks to fight eachother and show off, but the guy in white for sure is a superb player.
not sure how he can play swinging all around like that though lol

Talk to me via inbox if you'd like to keep discussing this. No need to take up room for those who want to discuss the video itself.
sean jones is in the white shirt.
specific parts that make you say that?
Hey man, not to cfrate an argument, but I AM a jazz trumpet player, have studied /transcribed the greats from clifford to dizzy to woody, and current stuff dave douglas, alex sipiagin, etc. And I accept that these guys have their shit together, no doubt. but this is always what happens at jam sessions- people just try and cut eachother (even if in fun) and the music goes out the window. is that dan nimmer on piano?
how do you get the impression that he wants to show off?
that little dude sure stood his ground.
fantastic!
hope front row got a good life coverage
good lord. I think I just crapped my pants.
Marcus came to my school in Jacksonville, Florida and we had a clinic with him
What the composition it is?
Well, in fact it was not "fighting", in the original languaje I speak -spanish- we say "duelo", that I think it means "duel". So It should say "trumpets duel" or so.
It is clear they are friends, otherwise they didn't enjoy as they are.
Dude I want to play like them :(
what song are they playing?
Does anyone know that type of mouthpiece the guy in the white is using?
Bach 3C. Believe it or not!

He certainly is the lead trumpet player in Wynton's big band.

10 People wish they could play trumpet
@jazzanova68 my words exactly... smooth....
gotta love that quote by the guy in White at 2:56-2:58 i forgot the song
Both were absolutely great! But.... That tall dude got to me! He won!
Must be Ben Wolfe on bass. Awesome
anyone know what tune they're playing?
i think they coexist quite well.
The soul is being played by Sean Jones
Is that Dan Nimmer on the piano?
Eric Liang Yep!
I kind of agree, being a pro trumpet player myself. It could have done with (for me), a little more variation in timbre. They both sounded the same, all the time.
man this dude in wynton is just outrageous!
they're both in the band
