The more of these videos you make, the more I realize that AAA games are beginning to be something to avoid for the most part. I may be a console player, but I know this channel will grow, and one day corrupt devs will have to do games right because they know they can't "Worth a buy" you. Great job Mack, the effort you make just to give a fully honest review is unbelievable and the gaming industry NEEDS more people like you. Keep it up, Mack. Your line of work is more than appreciated.
Mack should be getting way more views/subscribers than he does. Years of solid trustworthy content. Still the most underrated gaming critic on youtube in my opinion.
The cheating AI thing reminds me of the old Dawn of War games where the AI was piss-easy up until hard difficulty where they legitimately broke the game and started spamming units at you by the hundreds. Suddenly the AI has infinite resources, no population cap, and their tactics are to basically just zerg rush you and suffocate you under a mountain of bodies. And I hate that in games. I get that programming tactical AI is hard, but I can't stand it when you're killing the enemy to the point that every 1 unit of yours takes out 10 of theirs and you still get destroyed because of the sheer numbers difference that you can NEVER balance out.
+OckhamAsylum i never understood why cheating ai is a problem in rts when i played command and conquer i put 2 enemy on hardest against me and thats "cheating" basicly coz they have more units than me, but i still can win easy. total war series are the same ai is cheating and thats why it is so satisfing, u got some challenge. rts games without cheating ai are easy/boring after u learnt the game, even starcraft has an option to give cheating ai and its cool. if u dont like the AI play vs real players... but the problem with homeworld is even on hardest difficulty game is too easy lol
GoHeoNeoGo I hate the play vs real players argument. Of course real players make things harder, that's true for every game. But the problem with cheating AI is the fact that it's a worthless match at that point. If you lose, it's because they just globbed you with millions of units. If you win, it's because you know how to complete the objective or cheese out the AI. It's a problem because it's terrible programming, a flaw with the system. Being able to work with a flaw doesn't make it less of a flaw. At the end of the day, there's no thought going into anything. It's not like a general coming up with a strategy to defeat a larger force, it's just using mass-produced super heavy units or exploits to fight more exploits.
+OckhamAsylum i think what u want is simulation/realism...making it behave like a player. i dont get how can a cheating ai being a problem.Difficulty scaling works in rts that, wants to make it harder to win, and it doesnt matter how they doing it since its CPU AI.Cheating is not a problem, stupid/bad AI is the problem only
GoHeoNeoGo No, I don't want a realistic simulation. I just want an AI that doesn't spam units. Cheating AI *is* a problem. Again, it's bad programming. If I wanted to be up against double or triple the amount of enemies, I'd just set myself against three AIs in a skirmish. Cheating AI is usually also stupid AI. It's why the cheating happens to begin with, it's a cheap way of making things more difficult. It's like how in a poorly designed shooter, like Halo 5, instead of creating decent AI and a real skill-based challenge, they put you up against three of the exact same boss you've been fighting and killing the entire game. Using numbers as a challenge is just dumb. There's absolutely nothing smart or strategic about sending twelve billion units to the enemy base. They're set on an endless forward march until the game is over.
+OckhamAsylum vast majority of rts games cheat in a big way for the AI difficulty levels. mostly its resource and HP boosts. Wargame Red Dragon the AI was also perfectly aware of where your units were on the entire map as well.
The GOOD: 1. Graphics. It's realistic and furnished to perfection. 2. Atmosphere. It's great! Immersive story telling that bridges itself wonderfully with HW1. 3. Physics. It's definitely more polished compared to HW1 and HW2. 4. Combat. Combat looks and feels authentic (at first), much like HW1 and HW2. The BAD: 1. Interface. It's massively underwhelming. No escort patterns. No siege arrangement line-ups. No smart-formation movement and strategies. No firing distance preferences. No distance info when you press the move or even in the zoomed-out view. No ETA for units who are ordered to move from point A to point B. 2. Clipping. There are noticeable clipping issues with units and weapon line of sight firing. Eg. Harvesters stack with each other. No harvester docking animations. 3. Path-Finding. It's decent if you group similar smaller units together. Mixing them up however with slower heavier units then it gets pretty bad; horrendous even in tight spaces. 4. Units. Same unit types for both sides plus the fact that there are very few unit types present. It's like a demo. 5. Detail. No main-ship and carrier sub-system building. No specific unit part targeting, eg. Sub-system targeting to disable movement, weapons, or research. 6. AI (skirmish/MP). The AI is nothing but an auto-pilot attack everything rush type. It stops building units and harvesters midway even in the harder difficulty settings. Single player AI is mostly scripted. 7. Maps (skirmish/MP). It has what, 5 very uninteresting maps? really?! 8. HORRIBLE PERFORMANCE. For such a barren landscape with so few units, performance is horrendous. The latter missions plummet to single digits even when i turn off every video detail. I play the game at maxed everything and I have a good rig, mind you. I run Witcher 3 and every other game that's been released on ULTRA settings at 2560x1080 just fine. I'd give it a 6/10 for now, because it feels like a single player demo. Plus, it's unoptimized as fudge! Some missions run smoothly others take nose dive! It's definitely a step back from HW1 and HW2 when you look at it as a whole. Terrain height and line-of-sight gameplay isn't anything new in this genre. Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance/2, Ground Control 1/2, and even the classic Total Annihilation all have it. Company of Heroes and DoW2 do it better too as there is an angular projectile deflection modifier per shot that is taken into account. In this game, ballistics seem to perform like lasers. The game has... polish with its looks, most definitely, but so little content to be considered a true successor of the Homeworld franchise. (Until the paid DLC's come-out at least. LOL) It's way too expensive for its asking price with the content that's currently available in this initial release. I don't understand why such an old engine with updated textures taxes current generation gaming computers. I don't remember a game this unoptimized since Neverwinter Nights 2.
Fun factor trumps everything in the end. Agreed with the review, as a player who really cares only about single player campaigns, even in RTSs, this game was perfect for me. And as you said, amazing ambiance and atmosphere that just has to be experienced. Could not recommend to any friends who are into RTS primarily for multiplayer, however, due to lack of maps. Still, I think it's a wonderful game and a much needed sand based RTS in a while since the last Dune game..
The level of detail when you zoom right in reminds me of Ground Control, which were also epic RTS games. The gameplay kind of reminds me of those too. I'm hoping they add more maps and fix the AI (NOT as DLC, as patches, or at least free DLC). The mod scene may also be pretty amazing with this too as it was for the original Homeworld games and the Remastered edition.
Mac your a legend! I don't even own a pc but just love watching your videos. Hopefully I'll be able to afford one someday but if not I'll still love watching :)
i cant find any information about resource collection or base building, is that removed in its entirety? i really need that or its not really a game, just a move and shot game....
Enjoying your reviews greatly and finding your old reviews like this are useful with the steam summer sale... Yes I saw your recent steam app review and that was a 2 thumbs up!!
Hey Mack. I knew that Tommy Lee Jones frame you always use is from "No Country For Old Men", so I watched it and it was a good movie. Are you a fan of TLJ and/or that movie?
Remember when Homeworld came out in 1999 played it on P II 330 MHZ and just finished remastered collection, now in 2016 its worthy to say that there is save option.
Appreciate the video as always Mack. For me this game is €46 and I don't think it is worth a buy but you do say in the video to make our own minds up so I still appreciate the effort and time you go through to bring us all your Videos. On another note I bought Ancient Planet based on your best games of 2015 video, for €6.99 and have 36 hours in it so far. Only thing left is the 100,500! Achievement and I will get that simply because it keeps me playing the game and I love it. When you consider a €46 game that I will play about 14 hours campaign in vs a €6.99 indie game I already put double the hours into it is becoming harder and harder to justify AAA prices for the content they give. No disrespect to the developers, I have learned in life that nothing is as easy as we think and I couldn't do what they do because I wouldn't see it through but the industry needs to take a long hard look at itself and get back to offering value for money instead of insulting it's customer base with shaved content releases, with full intention to release said shaved content in dlc's and make even more money from us. Then throw out some bullshit excuse like their artists had nothing to do so they made some skins etc. If your artists are sitting around while the rest of the game is still in production, how about getting them to add more content to the game for the purpose of value instead of just bleeding your customers and giving us all a big middle finger. Not all developers are guilty of course but gamer's need to start making waves on the industry and standing together to show we will not accept high prices for low value anymore. I will be buying a game in feb that I put over 1000 hours into the first one but even in that case I am disappointed to see pre-order bullshit. I hate the fact that if I want said content I have to pre-order or will pay more for it as a dlc at a later date. Why? Just let everyone buy the game for the price stated and get what is in the game for everyone. I don't want to encourage what I think is a bad policy (pre-ordering) but having enjoyed the first one so much I also really want to get all of the game content. With the train-wreck that sword of the stars II was, it is proof that a second title may not match the first which is why I dislike pre-ordering. Luckily steam has finally put in a refund policy so at least something like sots II won't happen again but still I wish games developers would stop with the pre-order crap. So Keep fighting the good fight Mack and know you are always appreciated and supported.
You just cant launch a game today with no customizable hotkeys and 5 freakin maps for multiplayer, that is pure laziness. Back in the day a demo had 5 maps, that was the reasonable amount for a freakin demo. 5 fuckin maps in a 46 euro game... I will go back to Homeworld Remastered, thanks Blackbird for doing feck all
They'll patch it in 6 months. Just watch. Lol, this is called proper project management, they had a deadline, they hit it, now for the fix. They must have hit a snag with the AI, since Mac said that was a big problem I think that's what happened. This doesn't look like a game for which the developers have no love for, it looks like a problem in development was causing a delay and the stakeholders panicked so they hit the deadline with it as it is now. Good management if you ask me, the campaign seems solid, so people will buy it and thumbs up, since they can throw 10 maps and an AI together, with a skeleton crew, it will actually work out. I can see it.
+Pumpkin Pie In the future customizable hotkeys will be sold as dlc and you will require an account in order to save your game and premium to load it, internet fees may apply.
two questions the video doesnt mention: 1. can you pan the view by clicking and dragging (ex middle click)? 2. can you pause the game, pan the view, select units, give orders, and then unpause the game?
+Worth A Buy not for me, then. that was one of the things that made cataclysm much better than the other hw games, you could pause, look at your units, make sure you selected the right ones, etc, and then give orders. without that, you just waste half the time panning and zooming the camera and selecting the wrong things because some units are moving close to each other. of course they cant let you pause in multiplayer, but in single player theres no justification for not allowing pause, except to give crap ai a chance to present a challenge while youre panning and zooming the camera.
Fortunately, you can use AutoHotkey to rebind any game regardless of its limited ingame options. Tbh I cant play most games without it for multitude of configuration reasons like "Why doesnt pressing the sprinting key automatically toggle off the walk toggle" or similar. Or why cant wasd be arrow keys and so on in this game for example.
Hmmm... okay I don't want to be a smartass or anything, but based on the comment at 0:30 "Just nod your head and..." you might not know the origin of this game. So just in case it's confusing: Originally this game was called Hardware: Shipbreakers and it was basically a Homeworld fangame and not an official prequel. (I guess they went with land based RTS to not copy HW completely or maybe because of technical limitations.) Later on in development Gearbox contacted Blackbird and and gave them the HW license so they renamed it to Homeworld: Shipbreakers and turned it into an "official" part of the series. Also somewhere along the line they thought that Shipbreakers wasn't a good enough title so they changed it again, but that's just a side note. So yeah I've been expecting this game for a while now. The early concepts were real promising, but this execution is just too disappointing. I've heard that the campaign is good and that the mechanics are solid, but such a poor AI is not worth it for me since I'm not the multiplayer kind. Anyways, great review man, I'll be sure to come back to the game once it goes on a sale.
The game is pretty much the real deal Homeworld feel. The first thing that irritated the hell out of me were the controls. Why, oh why would you change the classic homeworld keybinds? No more alt+click focusing or middle mouse button focus. It just rubs me the wrong way. Another annoying thing is not being able to pause the game and inspect the units and the world while in-pause, or maybe i'm missing something here?
Wow I was fearful that you would vote down this game, Mac. I pre-ordered this (only this one, I promise!) hoping I might do better at it than the 3D world of Homeworld. We'll see how it goes. Happy hunting to all of us on the deserts of Kharak.
Good review, hope the devs add more to keep their playbase sweet, good game but let down by lack of content. Still enjoying it but I feel we should have gotten more for the price we paid.
13:08 Then get in control of your scrolling perhaps. Doesn't seem like it's the game's fault when the player hasn't gotten the hang of the controls yet.
Mack, I think it is worth a buy just because it is actually new, never before seen, even, yes, revolutionary! And it has been the first game that actually changed something about its genre in a year, even if it's only los, and range buff from terrain. It's something new, and you said it yourself, exciting. So A+ for the effort, B for execution. AI can be patched, and that will fix Skirmish, bugs can be fixed, mission can be adjusted(that falls under AI it seems), so thank you for giving it a thumbs up, you almost compromised your values. $45 may be a bit much, but it looks and feels different, it's not a StarCraft clone, or a C&C clone, I'm no fan for rts other than StarCraft, that may be because I am a blizzard fanboy, but I would buy this.
+Dimitre H Exactly, it was a very tough call as it's a shortish campaign and has other issues but the innovation here needs to be rewarded as the game battles are simply awesome. You saw in the video how I exploited the dunes by luring enemies into an ambush, you can do this so well in Homeworld. Also the fact you don't have a base works brilliant as the carrier is so versatile with it's power management system, it makes you really focus on using your units more tactically. It's a solid game but should have had more content.
+Worth A Buy, I like how much attention you give to games. I do hope they do this right and patch it. I do believe they hit a wall with the AI but had to release it for w/e reason. It happens.
+Dimitre H Not sure if you are familiar with Earth 2150 or The Moon Project, but they are entirely different approaches to RTS as well, so might be "worth a try". Especially the unit limits make you take care of each and use buffing and repairing units to accompany them in combat. And in the lenghty campaign, you can even take levelled up units with you. Different research options and the fact you can equip each vehicle chassis (land, sea, air) individually give it a nice tactical element and replay value. Wasted so many months playing just those in the early 2000s. ^^ Fortunately, the Earth 2150 Trilogy is usually dead cheap in sales.
+PrimeTimeGaming -Mac, this is the first first comment I've ever had on a video. Are you proud? Ask like this ^ and you will have a 27.3% better chance to receive an answer.
Great review Mack, I agree with most of your points, including the issues (which BlackBird has been very active on costumer support and claim they are looking into fixing all of this ASAP), but I wouldn't call this an AAA game, yes they had funding from GearBox but I doubt it was anything near what the current AAA games usually receive, they are a small studio of maybe 20 or 30 people and this is the first game they've released. I do have to agree the pricing is a bit salty, I only pre-ordered it because I'm a huge Homeworld fan and considering I got this game+HW:Remastered Collection+ Expedition guide for R$90 (our regional equivalent of 22US$ basically) it was just a great deal for me, but others might want to wait a bit until the game gets patched and some major issues get properly fixed.
I think the line of sight argument you hear everywhere is a bit of a surprise to me... It's been in some very prominent RTSs for some time now... Rome 2 has it, Grey Goo, that command and conquer clone (forgot the name), company of heroes (2 for sure, 1 maybe?)... I think for people like myself that own the original homeworld 1 and 2 and/or the remastered version, this looks like it's not worth a buy. It's basically the same game, without the added difficulty of managing a fleet in 3D space.
+koffieslikkersenior It works in this better than any other RTS due to the awesome map, it's great hiding behind a dune then bringing up a load of rail tanks and flanking the enemy, such awesome combat.
Another good review, Mack. My take is that 14 hours of campaign is not worth paying AAA prices. What happened to these devs? The Homeworld titles have always had 100+ hrs of gameplay, depending on how you went about it. Thanks for, once again, giving us the straight story. I'll wait for this one to go on sale in a year or so.
Looks like it has good atmosphere. But people are saying they finish the campaign after around 8 hours and with it only having 5(?!) skirmish maps it will be a Steam sale purchase for me sometime down the line.
MAC, three words, Auto Hot Key. go download it and setup a script to remap your keys. the most awesome program around when you need to re-bind keys. Here's part of a script I use when I need to rebind. w::up ; Forward (w) s::down ; Back (s) a::left ; Strafe Left (a) d::right ; Strafe Right (d)
I have to tell you, Mack, that Homeworld 2 (never played the original) is the _only_ RTS combat/strategy game that I truly enjoy. I've tried a couple of others but they generally tend to overwhelm me fairly quickly 'cause I'm old and slow and don't multitask very well. I found the few I did try to be far more frustrating than entertaining. ;) One of the main reasons for that, in the single-player story and human vs. computer modes, is that you could issue or change your units' orders, choose new research, start or change production of new units, and so on, while paused. Does this game retain that ability? If this game's combat system is anything like Homeworld 2 (it sure looks like it is from your video), then you're absolutely right. This is definitely not a "throw cannon fodder at the enemy" kind of game. Sure, you might be able to use that approach to take out your initial target but if you don't keep your eye on it (and weren't careful about what orders you gave them), your squad will attack the next enemy that comes into range, even if they're ridiculously overmatched, and thus get themselves ruthlessly murdered before you have any chance to get them out of harm's way. Finally, I found the keyboard mappings in Homeworld 2 to be very well-designed. I never felt the need to rebind anything. In particular, yes, you used the arrow keys to move the camera around the map, but you could also do the same thing by mousing to the edges or corners of the screen. Does this game not allow that?
+Worth A Buy Thanks for taking the time to answer, Mack, I truly appreciate it. I love your channel, please keep up the good work! You may very well be the most conscientious, effective, and brilliant bell-ringer in the entire history of the internet. Rabbit has an excellent instructor, so I'm sure he'll go far! ;)
I wasn't even going to bother with this game, especially since it seemed like an odd use of the Homeworld name, particularly since it's not a 4-D space strategy (or whatever you want to call it), but this review made me add it to my wishlist. I'm still not in the market for a full price game (Steam sale Steam sale!), but it sounds fun, and not dumbed-down.
Could you do a Worth A Buy video on a total war game? Maybe Attila or Rome 2 now that it has been patched, because I would like to know whether or not those two are worth buying.
What happened to the "best of the rest" category anyway? I see a lot of worthy material on GOG releases, mainly titles made by smaller developer teams or indies, but there's no Mack to take care of those.
Hey Mack great video. I have one question though. Are you going to review Naval action because I really wanna know how good this game actually is and what you can do because there are no good reviews out yet.
Mack, you mentioned the AI being shit in Skirmish and that they cheat on higher difficulties, but what about the campaign? Is it still enjoyable despite of that? Does cranking up the difficulty change the game significantly or do they also cheat and throw units at you which they just freshly spawned out fo thin air? You mentioned the typical RTS tank-rush from other games, but shouldn't that also work in here, especially with a bit of micro management? I remember how awesome Earth2150 handled the "taking care of units" bit, especially in the campaign in which you could take units with you to the next mission/map, and this game seems to be a bit like that. I personally am more interested in whether this can be considered a proper SP game, not interested in playing the arms race which RTS online multiplayer has turn into in the last decade or so.
+Bunker Knacker It's not like any other RTS game because you don't actually build a base, your carrier is your base, you can deploy turrets but that's about it. The units are very tactical so having the high ground around your carrier with turrets and rail guns will fend off a tank rush no problem because your carrier can go into turtle mode with the flick of a switch making it tough to kill. To win this game you need to focus on killing the enemy units and starving him of resources, it's great fun. The ai is not game breaking bad or I simply would have thumbed the game down.
+george berney F10 is not always the menu key in RTS. :D Maybe if Blizzard RTS games are the only ones you ever played. Escape for menu can be found in: C&C, Earth games, Grey Goo, Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander (?), Star Wars RTS games, Age of Empires, Dune, Empire Earth, Total Annihilation... the list goes on. Btw, many of those did not have rebindable keys as well. Never noticed this before.
+Bunker Knacker "many of those did not have rebindable keys as well. Never noticed this before."... Hmm didn't the Emperor: Battle for Dune one have rebinndable keys?
GepardenK Age 3 and CoH has F10 as menu key, you're right. Then again Age 1 and 2 have Escape as menu button and so do the Blitzkrieg and Sudden Strikes games. Oh, the Battle Realm games did too, btw. :P I guess after Starcraft it became more common, since games from the Warcraft 1 and 2 era usually have Escape as menu button. Also, when has "p" stopped being pause? Whatever the case, though, the majority of RTS games have always had non-rebindable keys and demanding this is a bit off and pointless. Every new RTS always made me learn all the shortcuts and I cannot remember any in which I actually controlled the "camera" using WASD. I mean Starcraft (and its newest expansion from 2015) doesn't have it either as "a" is usually the attack mode button. Do not see the point for bitching here.
This game reminds me of a submarine 2D game, in Skirmish mode or Cataclysm, with it square gameboard . What really annoys me about this game is the screenshots that interrupts you, just when you are going to use a key.
Great review Mack. Thanks as always for your honest opinion. I am going to take a pass on this and wait for improvements in the AI before I throw money at it. Can you review Age of Mythology ED and let us know what you think of that game?
Not played RTS since Generals many years ago. This id the best I've seen since look at games again. New rig to play games later this year so we will see how this improves. Crap the games still not found away round poor Ai.
+SWR112 You don't really notice in the campaign, I found that out tonight when I lost all my top level rail tanks to a sly flanking manoeuvre, am gutted I have been protecting them since the early missions.
Hey would you mind doing a revisit to the multiplayer on this one? I'm an old fart like you and there's one thing I've been missing and that is to re-experience the fun I had as a teen playing red alert. Many RTS games have come and gone throughout the years but this just looks like it could be it.
Thanks for the honest review =) personally I'll buy it cause I'm sure it will be patched and improved either by the developers or the community with the mods, at least, I hope so ^^ but anyway if the game is fun and "smart" in it's core, the technical stuff can always be patched later
Orpheus Program Well sadly it's too late for me, for I have already purchased the gold pack, although I am sure I will enjoy the game.... save the rest!
Orpheus Program Well I kind of enjoy the mechanics that was shown. I love getting new gear with "color codes" on them. I also like the mechanics on shooting, if it takes you a long time to kill enemies then it will push you to get better gear. But all of that is my opinion, if it is open-world/loot drops/bullet sponge enemies, then I'm probably going to like it. Destiny was alright, the thing I hated about it the most was the fact I have it on console.
Mac... You mean to say the voices of human faction in grey goo aren't as good as this (ADVANCING...)?! Lol - thanks for the review will keep an eye on this one.

+OckhamAsylum
i never understood why cheating ai is a problem in rts
when i played command and conquer i put 2 enemy on hardest against me and thats "cheating" basicly coz they have more units than me, but i still can win easy.
total war series are the same ai is cheating and thats why it is so satisfing, u got some challenge.
rts games without cheating ai are easy/boring after u learnt the game, even starcraft has an option to give cheating ai and its cool.
if u dont like the AI play vs real players...
but the problem with homeworld is even on hardest difficulty game is too easy lol
GoHeoNeoGo
I hate the play vs real players argument.
+OckhamAsylum

i dont get how can a cheating ai being a problem.Difficulty scaling works in rts that, wants to make it harder to win, and it doesnt matter how they doing it since its CPU AI.Cheating is not a problem, stupid/bad AI is the problem only
GoHeoNeoGo
No, I don't want a realistic simulation.
The GOOD:
The BAD:
Still, I think it's a wonderful game and a much needed sand based RTS in a while since the last Dune game..
eh fuck it who needs sleep anyway grab the popcorn let's watch mack
Man I love your reviews lol! You say all the things I wanna know about AND you make me laugh, genuinely laugh lol! Great job on your review videos! :)
Mac know one ever does game reviews as good as you keep up the good work fella
I very much like the look of this game. It looks simple enough to learn and tactical enough to be smart in. Good one for the next sale.
i cant find any information about resource collection or base building, is that removed in its entirety? i really need that or its not really a game, just a move and shot game....
+inputfunny Not even seen it haha
Worth A Buy Lol. I thought it was pretty good.
RFC3514 Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
RFC3514 Could be anyone's really.
+inputfunny The only problem I had with the film was that it simply didn't finish. It just stopped.
Keep up the hard work, your one of the better reviewers who say what they think which is actually useful
Can't trust them to improve the game so I wouldn't touch it until it's 50% off, or they've redeemed their half assed effort.
I agree. And i can report that multiplayer is awesome.
Remember when Homeworld came out in 1999 played it on P II 330 MHZ and just finished remastered collection, now in 2016 its worthy to say that there is save option.
Totally worth it and I expect a large modding community and updates to fix issues people point out.
I haven't played this yet, but i have so many memories of Homeworld pvp battles. God that game was so amazing.
You just cant launch a game today with no customizable hotkeys and 5 freakin maps for multiplayer, that is pure laziness. Back in the day a demo had 5 maps, that was the reasonable amount for a freakin demo. 5 fuckin maps in a 46 euro game... I will go back to Homeworld Remastered, thanks Blackbird for doing feck all
+Pumpkin Pie or better yet ... wait for a lower sale with its updates in the future
+Luis Fernando Bullshit.
+Luis Fernando Bullshit.
two questions the video doesnt mention: 1. can you pan the view by clicking and dragging (ex middle click)? 2. can you pause the game, pan the view, select units, give orders, and then unpause the game?
+Jim Steinbrecher Yes you can but you can't pause and give orders, you can pause though, sorry I should have mentioned this in the vid.
+Worth A Buy not for me, then. that was one of the things that made cataclysm much better than the other hw games, you could pause, look at your units, make sure you selected the right ones, etc, and then give orders. without that, you just waste half the time panning and zooming the camera and selecting the wrong things because some units are moving close to each other. of course they cant let you pause in multiplayer, but in single player theres no justification for not allowing pause, except to give crap ai a chance to present a challenge while youre panning and zooming the camera.
can you review wargame red dragon? Its a unique rts with good ambient sounds
+mase lane +1 im 1400 hours in best game i ever bought, no doubt.
+sillassieI hell yea it is! I must be a few hundred hours in myself
+sillassieI hell yea it is! I must be a few hundred hours in myself
+sillassieI hell yea it is! I must be a few hundred hours in myself
There's a steep learning curve though.
Its hard to find a DECENT hardcore PC only base building RTS anymore , last decent RTS was :- Red Alert 2 , CC generals and COH1
So just in case it's confusing:
Originally this game was called Hardware: Shipbreakers and it was basically a Homeworld fangame and not an official prequel. (I guess they went with land based RTS to not copy HW completely or maybe because of technical limitations.)
Later on in development Gearbox contacted Blackbird and and gave them the HW license so they renamed it to Homeworld: Shipbreakers and turned it into an "official" part of the series.
Thanks Mack, was waiting for your review before I made any decision towards this game.
You bloody sell out. joking....
We need more reviews like sim4....that had me rolling.
Fortunately, the Earth 2150 Trilogy is usually dead cheap in sales.
Mac this is the first first comment I've ever had on a video are you proud
+PrimeTimeGaming
-Mac, this is the first first comment I've ever had on a video. Are you proud?
Ask like this ^ and you will have a 27.3% better chance to receive an answer.
+ShoesOnHands Is it wrong that I replied to your and not primetimegaming just to be annoying :)
+Worth A Buy Hahaha, no, it's hilarious!
Don't you also get the original Homeworld updated for modern computers with this Mack? That's the ad I saw.
You're the best Mack, witty and wise until the end. :)
i waited years for this game, great so finally see it and being a success.
Worth A Buy I shall wait for a sale then :)
Sounds like a Wait For A Sale
hello mack love your videos, was wondering if you heard of black desert? and if you will you be doing a worth of buy video or series
I stopped watching Making a Murderer on Netflix when this popped up. Great video as per usual.
Will this ever be available on cd/dvd
F10 is actually used in a lot of older RTS games instead of ESC during gameplay.
Mack if you have enjoyed this game you might want to check out Rome 2. You can pick up the game on sale for around $20 or so on sale.
Here's part of a script I use when I need to rebind.
w::up ; Forward (w)
s::down ; Back (s)
a::left ; Strafe Left (a)
d::right ; Strafe Right (d)
I found the few I did try to be far more frustrating than entertaining. ;)
One of the main reasons for that, in the single-player story and human vs. computer modes, is that you could issue or change your units' orders, choose new research, start or change production of new units, and so on, while paused.
+Greg Wolking Yes the mouse can be used, the actual game binds are good once you get used to them.
+Worth A Buy
Thanks for taking the time to answer, Mack, I truly appreciate it.
2:27 YOU REQUIRE MORE MINERALS^infinity
Could you do a Worth A Buy video on a total war game? Maybe Attila or Rome 2 now that it has been patched, because I would like to know whether or not those two are worth buying.
if you like this you should review Planetary Annihilation. it's a great space rts game on Whole planets.
What happened to the "best of the rest" category anyway? I see a lot of worthy material on GOG releases, mainly titles made by smaller developer teams or indies, but there's no Mack to take care of those.
Mack you are amazing. Don't stop, no matter what anyone says!!! Also, would you do a review for red dead redemption maybe?
OYY MACK! COMBINE CHANNELS! I didn't know this shit existed!!
First decent RTS since god knows when and they didn't forget about the S in RTS.
Nice
I will buy this game
Hey mack! Loved the video. Have you tried the original home world games before? They're fantastic, and the remastered collection is even better!
Weird keybinding, but hopefully they will fix that or a modder will take care of it (like Arumba has had to do with EU4). Terrific review, thanks.
are you going to stream this game?
Did you say that the campaign is 30-40 hours long or 13-14 hours long?
Hey Mack will you ever do a video about your favorite games ever? Maybe a top 5 or 10? I know it's kinda generic but I would really like to know.
That-was-fast. Good lord, man.
Hey Mack great video.
I have one question though.
Are you going to review Naval action because I really wanna know how good this game actually is and what you can do because there are no good reviews out yet.
Nod your head and go ahhh xD
Looks like it's a worth a buy! Thanks for the vid
Some fair observations and criticisms. Still adoring it despite that.
Any console games up for review?
Hey Mack, are you going to do a review of Xcom 2 when it comes out ?
I've donated the money already for that one. Be surprised if he doesn't WAB the first BIG PC exclusive of the year
+Zuroslav Yeah probably about 3 days after it's released, you can thank Kevin "wee jock poo pong Mcplop" Wilson :)
+Worth A Buy That's good to hear, looking forward to it
Can you do Homeworld: Remastered?
how fucking hard is it for devs to program remappable keys? also mack f10 is always menu in rts
TheUnbeholden ,
Never heard of it, so I can't tell. Dune 2 and Dune 2000 did not have such options, though.
Bunker Knacker Didn't know that, and I played them long ago too :D
GepardenK
Age 3 and CoH has F10 as menu key, you're right.
Do not see the point for bitching here.
you should revisit ARK: Survival Evolved, it's been over 8 months and has gotten countless updates
Have you played company of heroes?
Makes me want to play Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. I always appreciate these videos though.
This game reminds me of a submarine 2D game, in Skirmish mode or Cataclysm, with it square gameboard . What really annoys me about this game is the screenshots that interrupts you, just when you are going to use a key.
Little green bars vrs little red bars wars: Game of Bars
As always ty Mack! Keep it on.
2016, the year of RTS
+ArmorDonio I certainly hope so!
Hey would you mind doing a revisit to the multiplayer on this one? I'm an old fart like you and there's one thing I've been missing and that is to re-experience the fun I had as a teen playing red alert. Many RTS games have come and gone throughout the years but this just looks like it could be it.
It reminds me a lot of a modern version of Warzone 2100 without the base building
Thanks for the honest review =) personally I'll buy it cause I'm sure it will be patched and improved either by the developers or the community with the mods, at least, I hope so ^^ but anyway if the game is fun and "smart" in it's core, the technical stuff can always be patched later
Mack are you going to make a WAB on Total War: Warhammer?
reminds me of Ground control...
why is it only 3fps on this vid?
I was in for the campaign and I loved the game. Never cared for multiplayer in Homeworld.
reminds me of command and conquer, I realy wish they would make another one.
I love homework games like this takes me back to supreme Commander 1-2
dude, why would anyone want to play a game about homework? Ew!
Need to catch up on math?
I meant homeworld ok damn
Will you review the division when it is in beta stage, or full release?
Do it Mac! I've seen some footage. ITs shit...Save them Mac!
Orpheus Program Well sadly it's too late for me, for I have already purchased the gold pack, although I am sure I will enjoy the game.... save the rest!
Open World, Bog of a Shooter, with limited gameplay. Destiny. Its gonna be Destiny.
+Happy Bacon I don't trust betas since I bought Hardline and Destiny based off the beta experience and didn't enjoy them.
i think if its on steam sale it will be thumbs up
Mate, new sub here. Loved that.
Didn't per-order thanks for the honest review. Will wait until I see it on sale.
how about an update? is it still worth buying just barely?
Mac... You mean to say the voices of human faction in grey goo aren't as good as this (ADVANCING...)?! Lol - thanks for the review will keep an eye on this one.
+Matthew Schmalz LOL yeah that was terrible.
