- Join us as we capture the stunning arrival and departure of the MV COHO, a vital passenger and vehicle ferry operated by Black Ball Ferry Line. Connecting Victoria, British Columbia, and Port Angeles, Washington, the COHO carries a variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and bicycles.
With daily round trips that take about 90 minutes, this iconic vessel traverses 37 kilometers (20 nautical miles) across the beautiful waters of the Pacific Northwest. Designed by Philip F. Spaulding & Associates and entering service in 1959, the COHO is named after the coho salmon, a hallmark of the region. Experience the charm of this historic ferry as it plays a key role in transborder travel.

Important note for times and figures: I use the Central European form (in this case the form used in Germany) for all information, as this is a German production and the English-language texts are merely a service for my non-German-speaking visitors. This means that 6:00 pm is used in Canada and is 18:00 in my video. In English, the usual 17.70 m is 17,70 m here.
Please note: My films are not sponsored by companies. I do not receive any money or gifts (ferry tickets) from the shipping companies.
My parents lived in Sequim , Wash. after they retired. We used to have lunch many times next to the load/un-load in Port Angelus and watch her transition
Welcome to my hometown of Victoria! The Coho is a legendary vessel, and I doubt Black Ball will retire her anytime soon as she is so iconic.
It’s interesting to see how she still is operating versus her two close cousins, the MV Queen of Sidney and the MV Queen of Tsawwassen, which are both retired, and unfortunately, both rotting away (especially the Sidney, which rots on the banks of the mighty Fraser River near Mission BC).
This is a fantastic video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the warm welcome! The COHO truly is iconic, and it’s amazing to see her in action. It’s always a pleasure capturing a bit of maritime history like this - glad you enjoyed the video!
I can't believe it still operates. It was old when I first saw her 25 years ago.
It’s impressive how the COHO keeps going strong after all these years. Truly a piece of maritime history still in action!
I just subscribed
Very good, thank you!
I live in Alaska and first saw the Kalakala ferry when it was still on Kodiak island. I toured her when she was on her way back to Seattle but made a stop in Seward to make her safe for the trip. I also visited her when she was docked on Lake Washington. I found out my Dad and Grandfather used to take her back and forth from Seattle to Tacoma during WW2 while working at the ship yard. I still have a large poster and other information about her and was very sad to see her being scrapped. Another hart brake coming is the sinking of the SS Inited States. Criminal they a ship of peace is not as important as all of the war machines around the country that are preserved. We even have a foreign ship, the Queen Mary preserved here. Shame on us. I’ve stayed on the QM and enjoy her, but she’s not ours.
Thank you for sharing such a personal connection with the Kalakala! It’s amazing how she touched so many lives and held such history. The loss of ships like Kalakala and the future of the SS United States really does feel like losing pieces of history. And I completely agree; there’s something truly special about preserving these peaceful vessels that connect us to different eras and communities.
At 47 seconds, my building comes in to view on the right. Great to watch the Coho and floatplanes all day. Along with everything else. As.a side note: we occasionally get otters in parking garage.
Sounds like a fantastic view! Watching the COHO and the floatplanes must be amazing, and an otter visitor sounds like quite the surprise. Thanks for sharing!
truly one of the most beautiful ships we have left here on all of the western coast of North America, up there with the last holdouts of the Alaska ferries
Philip Spaulding really knew how to design a good ship! (shame his "White Canoe" for Hawaii was never built though, that thing was to be gigantic)
The COHO truly is a gem among West Coast vessels, and Spaulding’s design has clearly stood the test of time! We're lucky to still see his work in action with the COHO.
Beautiful old ferry! Thanks for sharing Carsten and have a great day! // Bertil.
Thanks for your kind words, Bertil! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Have a wonderful day!
