I' m a developer. I think the renting software model is a scam. Upgrades for a year is BS. You are paying for their development. An honest company should sell completed and tested modules that meet a clear set of requirements. They make you pay for bug fixes or poor design decisions with the upgrade/rent model. I'm independent now but I would never work for those companies.

By all means don’t buy it, then. If you wanted a one-time purchase of a generally bug free, well specified and tested implementation of everything HRD does I hope you’re ready to shell out 5-figures. Software like that doesn’t cost 2-3 figures.

To develop commercial software, one has to have developers, project managers, Q/A, marketing, and product managers. Given the size of the HRD development and support team, payroll, benefits, and taxes alone has to be near $500k per year, even if development is offshore. This does not include the thousands to attend trade shows and to have physical radios for testing. Given the size of the HRD subscriber base, the hosting costs for their web and license servers could also be in the thousands per month.
A general model for B2B software is a significant initial base fee then 18% - 22% per year for support and maintenance. The HRD policy of a $100 base fee and $50 per year is quite similar for his B2C model given the fact that he lets you pick 'n choose when to pay for maintenance and support. In most models, once you stop paying for support, you have to buy the software anew again.
Considering it costs $40 to go to Taco Bell for two people, complaining about a $100 base fee and $50 per year has little justification. Additionally if your premise of the subscription model being evil, then logic dictates that you do not have a phone, a Internet connection, a car payment, pay rent or have a mortgage, have Netflix, Spotify, etc.

@@RadioSpectra This hobby is peculiar in that folks will buy thousands of dollars worth of gear with little or no thought, yet balk at paying anything for software.

I’m a software developer and really like this model of owning a perpetual software version with a year of updates to solidify it.
