Great video Emily! Very informative and balanced perspective. I suspect that the reason you find Canadians more open to meeting people than Brits has to do with Canada being a relatuvely young country, heavily dependent on immigration from a wide variety of countries/cultures. It's understandable that British society, given the ancient history of the place, is much more established and, as a result, perhaps a bit more rigid? No offense intended. I base that on my experience as a teenager when most of my friends' parents had immigrated from England, Scotland abd Ireland. They all said, when I asked, that the social mobility available in Canada was something that impressed them, since they were all somewhat resentful of the rigidity of the British class system. Anyways, once again, job well done!

I would happily skip mediocre trips to Majorca if it meant I got to live in Canada 😁 It is handy though, and I know what you mean, I got the Eurostar from london (after a 3 hour trip from the SW) and it only took me 2 and a half hours to get to Paris!

Ahh, but there are so many great options in Europe! I do miss easy trips to Barcelona, the Canaries, Rome, Southern France, etc. (of course there are also some amazing places in North America), but Europe is just so charming 🥺

Great content! Summed it up really well. I think the only downside that you miss after a while of being here is the convenience of seeing friends and family in the UK/home. Now, is it worth giving up the quality of life in BC for that? This question is a hard one to answer or act on.

This is very true for some! For me, I don’t feel it as much (at least not like I used to). At around the 4-year mark I think the scales balanced because I had made a lot of amazing new friends here and got used to the fact I live far away from family/other friends :)

I actually found Brits to be more traveled. Maybe it's because I lived in Montreal, so most people I knew weren't rich, and a vacation meant going to Cuba (or Mexico, Dominican, Jamaica etc.) for an all inclusive. Or maybe to Disneyland! I found people were more likely to do road trips, like driving to P.E.I or Quebec City. Much more rare to do city breaks to New York City or Boston (almost like, do it once or twice and that's it). The people I met in the UK were so incredibly blasé about their travel experiences. They thought nothing of "popping over to Greece" for a week, and then a few months later going to Spain. I don't think I met anyone in the UK who had not been on a holiday outside the UK (and multiple times at that), where as in Canada it's common to meet people who have never been abroad (beyond Canada or the U.S).

Myyyyyy goodness... Where do I start???.
Costco? It's usually a celebratory event if your bill at check-out is under $200
Aren't there any Superstore or gastly Walmart's in Victoria? Even with your natural blah blah blah diet it's muuuuuch cheaper at both of these and if they don't have it... Just ask and they usually bring it in. They love any suggestions for stock. That's been my experience anyway. I've lived in Vancouver Okanagan Kootenays and Kamloops. It's a hard pill to swallow that I'm actually an albertan for 2O yrs now. Gahhhhd is been 20 yrs??? I can't believe it.
I was planning on spending some time on the island this summer in spite of the horrid gas prices, but the grocery avail seems more a problemo that I would have thought.
-40, -50 in Alberta is just a state of mind. If you drive a vehicle one doesn't even notice, really. And it's only a couple days. So irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Two weeks ago I was in Toronto, landed red eye from Calgary at 6am.... And also froze to death to get to hotel on bus, subway & Street car to Queens Quay. I haven't worn socks or gloves or scarf ALL DAMN WINTER in Calgary....I wanted Hotel to turn on gas fireplace in the bar just to warm up. It was awful.
Don't let the cold weather scare you from Alberta. We have the most sunshine than anywhere else including when it's -50C. It's blinding at times. That's prob why -40 in Calgary is warmer than -8 in Toronto. Wierd..
And I think we've only had -40+ maybe 7 days. HOW MANY DAYS OF GLOOMY cloudy rain have you had this winter?

Victoria is in the Olympic Rain Shadow, so we actually don’t get that much rain (less than both Toronto and New York), but I love the rain anyway :) I'm from England, so cloudy days don't bother me - alas, Victoria is one of the sunniest places in Canada (averaging 308 days of sunshine). I love being outside and dislike extreme cold, snow, and ice, so I would struggle to be in Alberta during the winter, just like I did in Toronto.
I really don’t like Walmart, so I don’t shop there unless I really need to.
