You and me both! Although I must say, once you confront those thoughts, actually think about them and understand where they come from, they start to fade away. (They pop right up again when I do something stupid to ruin a workpiece though lol 😆 )
That looks great! I find that when I'm in that state of mind with a project, I just have to give myself a kick in the ass and actually do it. 99% of the time it is never as bad as my brain is making it out to be and it's always worth the effort.
It never is that bad in the end is it? With this cabinet even, I've made a bunch of mistakes along the way, but when I look at it, I love the damn thing and am so glad I finally did it, very much worth the effort. Cheers John!
All the things you felt in your mind are precisely the same thoughts I have of my own. Thank you so much for your humble candor and for expressing to me that I am not alone with my thoughts. Well done! I appreciate your style and work; cheers brother!
I get it. I plan and plan, obtain the material, measure and measure, cut and realise a mistake or miscalculation. So back to planning and the cycle repeats. The enjoyment I get is from overcoming obstacles and developing the process and skills. Love the presentation. Well done.
aahahaha, cheers man. Gotta have some fun in the editing process 😂 My son got a laugh out of the music as well, but then he said I should get MrBeast to edit my videos - so I guess he doesn't like it overall 😂
As Mr Ramsay says... "Do you work with wood? Then you're a woodworker." We put all sorts of expectations and limits on ourselves. The hobby is for fun, so let it be that. Then just occaisionally you end up with an epic cabinet :D
My first ever comment on youtube. I just had too say that I totaly understand how you feel and the hurdle your inner voice causes. I am the same. Have been a wood and metalworking youtube junkie for years now. I wanted to start a youtube channel 5 years ago but I have still not done it due to my inner voice. "what could you contribute with that have not been done", "you can not do it properly", "you can not even speak english well enough to be understood". So here I am 5 years later as just a viewer. Have subcribing to your channel for a looong time and I just want you to know that you are a woodworker and you make a difference! Greetings from Sweden!
Everything has been done before Hans, but that doesn't mean that it isn't worthwhile you doing it as well! I'm honoured to get your first comment on youtube, here's to many more! 👍 Thank you for the kind words!
Fear of failure - set the standard of success so high you know you’ll never achieve it, so why bother starting. Been struggling with that my whole adult life. Great subject to talk about! A friend who studied psychology once told me the “correct” term is Imposter Phenomenon.
That's the real pain of it, it makes you think 'why bother', so you put off doing and learning things that you actually _are_ capable of. I used to have the ol' imposter phenomenon/syndrome bad in my 'real' job - worked through that a few years ago though and have never been happier at work - but more and more I've realised lately that it still affected me in my workshop. Crazy as the workshop stuff was supposed to just be for fun, no one is putting any pressure on me at all there! 😄
Cheers Vince, I find it really useful, it's nice to have everything off of the bench or out of drawers, and still within easy grabbing distance of the workbench.
Hello mate. Lovely storage! Great entry, you've done an awesome job! As for imposter syndrome, everyone has suffered it at some point in life, I know I certainly have, I've probably talked myself into every job I've ever had without any idea of how I'll make it work!! Even now I'm putting myself out there on YT, whilst I make something and then a video, before I submit I've always got the internal monologue of "why would someone have any value in watching me mess something up!" But you know what, it's kind of nice letting yourself be vulnerable too, and putting yourself out there for public scrutiny! Cheers
Cheers Sam, it's been on the todo list for so long, once I decided I was hosting a challenge, choosing the theme was fairly straight forward. Had to force myself into building it, but I learnt heaps, and confidence is now sky high, looking forward to the next build now! Going to work through my backlog of 'dream' builds. 😊 Keep up with your videos man, great style to them, honest and fun 👍👍
I feel you - there are some projects on the shelf waiting on the next step, but I'm putting it off because I'm not sure I'll be able to do it... 😅 And that cabinet came out beautifully, mutch to pretty for shop furniture! 😁
@@woodfather I was more or less forced to jump right into one of the hesitate builds by the deadline to this years treasure trade, and breezed through the tricky stages. So much for feeling uncertain... 😅
My man, what is true of all of us is that our skills, our shop, our work is better than some and worse than others. There are only two people for whom that’s not true…the world’s best woodworker, and the world’s worst. The rest of us are, and likely always will be, somewhere in the middle. Relax, enjoy, and try not to lose any fingers!
Mario this hit at exactly the right time for me. Have 100+ BF of ash sitting in my shop waiting to become a farmhouse table. It is just acclimating to my anxieties over "stuffing it up".
That's just as important as acclimating to the humidity! 😊 Cheers John, go slow, and enjoy the process, it's amazing what we can do once we stop worrying and start building. 👍
Mario.. first time watching your videos and it was an absolute pleasure. What an amazing end result you should be bloody proud of that. Fear holds us back from so many things in life.. you sir have nothing to fear (although I know saying that may not mean anything but it’s true) looking forward to more content and watching your past videos.
Hi Paul, cheers for watching! Honestly I am super proud of the cabinet, whenever I walk into the workshop now I have to stand for a moment and admire it lol. As long as it hangs on the wall, I've decided that I'm done with the doubt and fear of failure! (god I hope that french cleat holds up... ) 😂 Thanks for watching!
Love your content! Not sure if you have a router plane, but they are a pleasure to use and clean up your rabbets and dados very nicely leaving a perfectly flat bottom. Keep up the great stuff!
Great video mate, I really enjoyed it. Give yourself an uppercut and stop thinking that crap because you’re a great woodworker and a great presenter. Oh by the way, fix that start/stop switch on your table saw.
Man, that bloody switch, I've fixed it ten times, Ive got a nylon lock nut in there now to keep it right! Cheers Vic, looking forward to catching up in a few weeks, I hear that Chris is having fifty makers over at his house for it 👍😜
Great job mate, looks fantastic. The biggest stress I have is if I screw up I will have to go buy the supplies again and at that point you are thinking maybe I should just go buy it instead of making it. Anyway if you stop woodworking you have a ready made dartboard cupboard…😃
hehe, I can't stress how careful I was with that Oak plywood, after I realised I would get away with using just half a sheet if I cut it juuuuuuuuuust right 😄
Yep, "I won't do a good job so why even bother". I'm glad I've moved on from that, it's much more fun to woodwork when you just focus on doing as good as you can, and simply enjoy the process. 👍
great build! about to do my own, very similar to this. Have been collecting hand tools via marketplace to attempt to become more "woodworker" and less "power tool user" 😂
It's great fun, and now, two or three years later, it's still a great source of pride when I walk into the shop. Definitely go for it, you won't regret it!
🙂 many thanks! The more people I talk to about this kinda stuff, the more people say similar things! We're all the same, just trying to have some fun and chopping ourselves down at the same time!
Mario that was awesome video mate and highlighted what I’m sure a lot of woodworkers go through, the doubt etc etc. I am not anywhere near your league of expertise mate but I reckon having anxiety doesn’t help when I try to build a project. I must come inside and talk to the wife over and over that I have stuffed it or did this or that and I’m out of my league, what was I thinking trying to build shit when I struggle hammering a nail in 😂😂😂 (joke). But she talks me down and I continue with the project…. Your cabinet is blood fantastic mate. Love your story! Cheers 🍻🍻🇦🇺🇦🇺
We've all got to cut ourselves some slack I reckon David ;) I've decided from now on to just enjoy the process, the doubt can stay outside the workshop from now on!
Now build another 4 years from now (5 years from when you built this) and include everything youve learned. I always like to see the growth and these tool chests always seem to really show it. You did good but like I always think to myself "you can always do better." Just remember to take notes and keep plugging away.
I know exactly what you mean. My workbench I built 7-8 years ago, and I love it, and I'm super proud of it, and I would love to rebuild it using the skills I have now. The problem is, (just like the cabinet), it works so well, I don't really need to rebuild it. 😆 Maybe if the Woodfather channel is still going in 4 years, I'll gift this cabinet to a woodworker and build a new one!
Still there myself. But as the wood father you just have to make the wood a tool so sharp it can't refuse😂 your mission W007 if you wish to create it, James
"I'm going to make you a cabinet you can't refuse.". Honestly after this project and video it was like a switch going off in my mind Andrew, I just decided, screw it, I make things out of wood, I'm a woodworker damn it! Much more enjoyable this way. 🙂👍
Mate....who reads a Manuel 😂 Seriously, fantastic video....editing 100%.... and trust me, you're not the only one out there with Imposter Syndrome....coming from the El Presidentay himself 😊 Well done on the cabinet Mario...looks like a bought one and can l just say that those weights look a little under used....am l right, or am l right 😂
If I learnt it from you though, I guess that means that you are my Manuel?! Ohhh wait a second! _That's_ why you have a *Spanish* Knuckleheads channel! 😂 You might be right about the weights, I had to edit out 45 seconds of heavy breathing after I lugged them up to bench height! Cheers Manuel! 😉 (also, super satisfying to hear that literally all of us are in the same boat. 😁)
I've spent 10 months thinking that you made this comment on the wrong video, or that it was an obscure reality tv reference or similar. 😆 I've never been a big trekkie but over the last month have been watching clips here and there, and all of a sudden I came across a wedding clip of Jadzia and Worf, and everything suddenly makes sense! 😁😆 Yes, the music is eerily similar! Great pickup! 😆
If this video and the comments on it have taught me anything, its that a lot of people feel the same way - imagine what we'd collectively achieve if we all just decided to just go for it. Cheers and all the best!
